First Wolf Parade at Terminal 5, New York on 7/13 and now Flaws by Bombay Bicycle Club? Hot diggity!!!

Wow… what a trip! As far as business trips go, considering the standard is long overseas trips of a week or two, spending days in less-than-awesome factory-type settings all at once alone & surrounded by thousands of people, this week’s was pretty sweet.

A quick flight to NYC, a trade show, a Wolf Parade concert with an old friend, more trade show action the next day, then a delayed but still, super quick flight back to CMH. Check. DONE!

What? Yeah, that’s right, for once, instead of either a) a boring meal with a business person or b) sitting in a hotel doing work emails, I was able to get my ass up and make the trek down to a shitty little venue called “Terminal 5″ in Upper/Lower East/West/South/North-side etc of the city (yeah, I don’t really keep up with all that), buy an extra ticket off a girl as I walked to the place for $20 (one of her friends didn’t show), pop in, get a beer, meet up with an old friend who moved to NY and told me on the Facebooks that the show was even occuring, and watch a pretty solid concert!

Not bad for an overnighter, eh? You can see tons of photos from the show from fellow bloggy blogger Will at We All Want Someone To Shout For (looks like he made his way up front in the stagnant aired venue to snap a few close ups, and by few, I mean about 1,000) as well as a slightly star-struck and up close concert review. ;) His mobile internettal devices weren’t working so hot in the venue, so alas, no meet up between bloggers was to occur.

Anywhosals, for a different perspective, i.e. from a dude who chilled more in the back, here’s my quick review…

It was a bit of a walk from 29th street over to Teminal 5, but considering the time and my inclination, I was up for the walk, take in a few sights & sounds of the city that seemed at once chocked up in 80s decadence and a decaying mess. Besides, it was a chance to test out that new camera app on my new Samsun Moment phone Sprint dropped on me (more on that a different day), so why not?

So, the show… First up, a band called Zola Jesus. Hindsight word is that they are good, even the great big blog in the sky Pitchfork likes them or something? Well, can’t say I heard the album, but in concert, it’s 2 dudes on keyboards (one channeling one of the Buggles), and a woman with an amazing voice literally pacing the stage like a cage polar bear in midwestern zoo. The songs were a bit samey and you got the sense that Zola were really feeling, not only the importance of every word in every lyric, but also the dramatic chord changes as the dude in the Batman t-shirt, well, when that left hand came down on that keyboard, oh… he FELT it.

Next up? Moooooooools (quantity of o’s may be off). A band out of Japan that’s been around since the mid-90s! First the bad, the lead-singer couldn’t hit a note to save his life… oh my. The good? I could care less because these guys were brilliant! It was like some unholy demon spawn of Rush & Pixies from Japan! And yeah, it was all in Japanese, not that it mattered because 1) THEY ROCKED and 2) the venue’s sound is so bad, making out what any band said at any given time was like, well, let’s just say I can relate to Anne Sullivan now. Look it up!

Finally, the reason for the season, the défilé de loup (sorry, been watching the Tour de France, think I’m picking up a few words). One word, no, make that two: Solid! Rockin’! Yep, they played songs from all the albums, of course, and the fans went the giddiest over anything from Apologies, I went the giddiest over anything from Zoomer, and Cave-O-Sapien from Expo was sweet biscuits. Everything was sped up a bit and amped up a bit, I think the hot venue was getting to them too. By the time we got to “Kissing The Beehive”, they were going so fast, I think they condensed the song down to 1:53? I may be off a few minutes as, for a finale, it doesn’t get much better than “Beehive”. Very solid! A light 4 out of 5 wheelies!

The only bad thing was the venue. Terminal 5 pretty much sucks. Stagnant air, really bad sound, and REEEALLY bad sound. Voices were a muddled mess, Krug’s keyboards, sometimes you heard, sometimes you didn’t, and the flat dance-floor style set up (looks like it was once a shitty disco) is really not conducive for actually “seeing” the band. I’m just thankful, once again, I’m not a average heighted woman. I imagine paying good money to look at a stoic dude’s sweaty back as he strokes his puby beard isn’t the pinnacle of their concert experience.

Here’s what they played per Will (Sorry, I don’t write these things down) and some fan vids from youtube:

Soldier’s Grin
What Did my Lover Say? (It Always Had To Go This Way)

Palm Road
Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts
Ghost Pressure
In the Direction of the Moon
Fine Young Cannibals
Cave-o-Sapien
This Heart’s on Fire
I’ll Believe in Anything
Little Golden Age
California Dreamer
Pobody’s Nerfect

Encore:
Cloud Shadow on the Mountain

Shine A Light
Kissing the Beehive

Good show… If they come your way, check ‘em out!

Okay, enough about sweaty men (oh, the spam I’ll receive now), let’s talk about some new music that filled my ears during my illustrive time at the clustercuss known as JFK airport. That’s right, I’m talking about Flaws by the Bombay Bicycle Club!

Image

Funny, I don’t remember these guys being so tender last time we romped through their musical offering, yet here we are as Flaws, though not flawless, strums along acoustically, finger-plucking their way into the quiet lonely heart of a traveling man. No, it’s not some Fleet Fox / Bon Iver wanna-be situation, it’s just beautiful music, heartfelt, and, well, tender.

Enjoy!

1. Rinse Me Down
2. Many Ways
3. Dust On The Ground
4. Ivy & Gold
5. Leaving Blues
6. Fairytale Lullaby
7. Word By Word

10. Flaws
11. Swansea

Ah, Some Bicycle love: Myspace | Official & some vids, “Flaws” & “Evening / Morning”!

I thought about doing a big write up, full of bombastic imagery….  but then, after watching countless minutes of Anthony jibber-jabber on at his v/blog, getting to know the enemy, be the enemy, touch the enemy in his sleep, snuggle with the enemy after slipping roofies in his drink down at the Shampoo Club that one night,  it seemed only appropriate to do this thing vlog-style, eh?

Eh, indeed!

Fuck it, here we go!

Gotta say, weird watching me & hearing me…. Not sure how I feel about any of that at all.  Forgot my glasses, huh, and what is going on with that quaff????

Some kinda quasi-greaser-come-over action???  Was I rocking that shit all day?  Damn!  For the record, that wall is blue, a sky blue.  Maybe next time I’ll go all high-def on ya so you can see all my luscious aging and shit!  Even give you a tour of the Tsuru residence??

This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you… Expo ’86 by Wolf Parade

“This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you…”

Probably one of the worse lines you, as a kid, may have ever heard from a parent. It was the line many parents used just moments before they were out to physically hurt you.  Their weapon of choice varied from parent to parent, of course, and my dad’s choice?  The belt… More specifically, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2″ wide leather dress belt with the “D” embedded in the belt buckle he wore to work that he’d use on the back of my bare legs.

Hurt like a bitch.

When one of my stepmoms would punish me, letting me know I went too far and that I had to wait in my room until my father got home, I knew I was in for some pain.  I’d shake with fear when I heard his truck pull up, when I heard his muffled voice come into the house and hear just bits of conversation as he was downloaded on the days events.

I’d watch the door, waiting to hear his foot steps, waiting to see the knob turn, already crying.  There was usually some words, but the only ones I remember where those quoted above. If it hurt him, it never showed.

I’ve been listening to the new Wolf Parade, Expo ’86, since this weekend.  Normally, when we don’t have glowing things to say, we tend to just not write about it…  But, like all things in life, there are exceptions.  Those exceptions are my favourite bands. To ignore a Decemberists, REM, Sunset Rubdown, etc, etc, and pretend like they never happened is just… well, disingenuous.  If TSURURADIO is disingenuous then we are nothing.

The line my dad — and many others, for that matter, which begs the question, how did all these dads catch on to that line? — used was bullshit.  It didn’t hurt him.  I can’t tell you how many family get togethers involving grandparents and aunts & uncles & cousins & whatnot where they would recollect with a sort of demented glee the “whippins”.  Not only the whippins they gave, but also the ones that they received from my grandfather (and he from his and so on)!

But I’m not going to lie to you.  Let’s talk about Expo ’86 and believe me, this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.

First the good.  The songs aren’t bad.  Many, like “In The Direction Of The Moon” & “Cave-O-Sapien” are lots of fun.  In fact, I’ll go as far to say “In The Direction Of The Moon”  is my favourite track on the album and I’m pretty sure it’ll end up on some future mixtapes here and there.  I really like it.

In fact (x2), most the songs are just fine!  Really, nothing really wrong with them at all.  But… they are, for the most part, just there.  They sound uninspired & almost plodding like “Yulia” or like in “Two Men In New Tuxedos” which sounds like pretty much any Krug song you may have heard a thousand other times with bits of psychedelia thrown in for good measure.

This threw me off. I had read this was recorded pretty much live, as opposed to my favourite album of their’s, At Mount Zoomer.  So, when the album seemed kinda bland I thought maybe it was me, maybe it’s the 2 weeks of rain here, maybe it’s my mood, my sore nutsack — yes, wrong saddle + titanium clips where vasectomy is + 2,000+ miles = unhappy testes, but don’t worry, back to my right saddle and 2 weeks of my colourful American Apparel colourful undies giving me support where I need it… I’m good to go!

Where was we?  Oh yeah.

But I listened again & again, took a break, listened and wrote about other albums, came back to it, over and over and over again and well….

Meh.

I’m sorry Wolf Parade but this is kinda boring.

*sigh*

I don’t know, you guys are so good in your respective bands of Handsome Furs & Sunset Rubdown, maybe it’s time to, you know, scale things back a smidge and just worry about those bands and do your fun little collabos here and there?  I don’t know.  You guys seemed so excited about this one too!  How you had two albums worth of awesomeness and stuff, how you guys just got in there are played and played!  I was excited too.

I’m sorry.

I want you to sit here and think about what you’ve done.  I’ll let you know when dinner is ready.

Hey kiddos…  Well, it’s that time again, time for your boy to head down to sunny (and I mean S-U-N-N-Y) Mesa, Arizona to visit some family.  Now, I’ve got black hair and I’ve been riding my bike alot (giving me a decent tan), so I’ll make sure to take my birth certificate, just in case some cop decides that I might not be “legal”. Now, even though I might not be posting over the 3 day weekend (I’ll be back on Monday, no worries), keep an eye out for one of our other wonderful contributers to pop in (you never know!), and if that’s not enough for your greedy greedy heart, you can always come play along here:

Our Society

AH! And guess what!  If you are in or near Columbus, OH this weekend, the talented, incredible, awesome, and (may I add) S-E-X-Y Crafty Cotillion are hosting a screening of the documentary Handmade Nation as well has holding a Spring Trunk show on Saturday, May 8th at 3pm at Studio 35 (3055 Indianola Ave.).

The trunk show will precede the screening from 1-3pm. Arrive early to enjoy a beer and shop for the perfect handmade Mother’s Day gift. Participating Cotillion members include: AmyD, Crafty Beavers, Laura Stith, Maram, Mary Martineau, Mary Moon DesignsMiss Megan MacOut of the Pink SkyPoshta Stationery & DesignStinkybombSweet Stella DesignsTornangel012Tsurubride (YAY BABY!!!), Umbrella Girl ProductionsWhat the Rock?!, & Wholly Craft!!!

So, go buy yer momma something special, okay?  She deserves it… she raised your gnarley ass!

Okay, before we get to the new music, I was super surprised when I poked over to the elbows and saw that there was a whole slew of new hot & hyped songs on their hot & hyped list!  I was all like, “whaaaa?” and the interwebs was all like, “yah! I know, right?!”  So… with that means it’s time, once again & already, for our vaulted TSURULOOSIES!!!!

As always, we are judging the songs with a wheelie rating, maximum of 5 wheelies!  So, let’s get to it!!!

Books – Beautiful People

Okay, starts off with “Bohemian Rhapsody” in reverse, I think but then falls into a sweet little groove.  Nice.

Dom – Living In America

Hey! this isn’t a cover of that James Brown song! It’s just more dance music.

Korallreven – The Truest Faith

Amazon rainforest, tender. New age dance? Where’s that Yanni sample?

Pallers – The Kiss

C’mon people!  Snooze fest.  Let’s get this shit started already!

Phosphorescent – The Mermaid Parade

Not exactly exciting, but.. getting there, ish.

Wolf Parade – Ghost Pressure

Hey, the new Wolf Parade we mentioned the other day? Hmm… Not bad. Starts off meh, but picks up.  Not bad.

Wolf Parade – What Did My Lover Say

The other one, the Krug one. Better, yes… Better. Time to stop listening to WP, got an album coming out soon, and they are an “album band”, so no more singles, okay guys?

Okay… that’s enough of that! Let’s get on to our twofer (my) friday, first up, Pink Grafitti by Secret Cities!

Image

Okay, this is for fans of Grizzly Bear and that other band by them Eagles something (can’t get it in my head, though I’m soooo close), as you have the same over all aesthetic of layers and harmonies and something bigger than it first appears going on.  Just ornate & beautiful, often haunting, compositions & harmonies.  When I happened on this album, was just kinda floored in the way it pulls you into a dream of sorts, not a carnival, but I’m having a difficult time getting the right imagery, but definitely an escapist memory trapped in the back of your head, only to come out when you are fast asleep.

Man.. what a horrible description. Sorry  Secret Cities!  How about we just let the music speak for itself, eh?

1. Pink City
2. Boyfriends
3. Slacker
4. Pink Graffiti pt. 2
5. Wander
6. Color
7. Aw Rats
8. Pink Graffiti pt. 1
9. Vamos A La Playa
10. The End

Next up? The Fugliest Album Cover Of The Year winner, hands down, Grey Oceans by Cocorosie!!!

Image

Seriously ladies… what the fuck.  I get it, you are making a statement or whatever, challenging me and stuff. But, you know, how about just a nice photograph of something?  Give some unknown photographer a moment vs whatever the fuck that is.

Okay, regretful album covers aside… this album.  Oh my.  It’s kinda fucked up and at first listen it kinda reminds me of Laurie Anderson on drugs, but after a few times through, you get kinda addicted. A syrupy addiction, sticky, weird, and yummy.  Once again, I’m at a loss for even remotely proper descriptions.  0 for 2, SA-WIIIING and a miss!

Oh well.  I think the lead-off track, “Trinity’s Crying” and the single “Lemonade” really give you the range of the odd addictiveness. Check it out then go preorder the vinyl (the cover is much better, kinda)!!!

1. Trinity’s Crying
2. Smokey Taboo
3. Hopscotch
4. Undertaker
5. Grey Oceans
6. R.I.P. Burn Face
7. The Moon Asked the Crow
8. Lemonade

Pretty cool, eh?  Well that’s it!  Have a great weekend, everyone!  Go riding, have fun, and we’ll see you here on Monday!

Cheers my friends & until next time,
