Howdy kiddos! How the fuck are ya? Me? Well just dandy dandy, thank you for asking…  As many of you know, I’ve been a busy boy over at tsurufoto, takin’ lots of pictures, starting a nudie blog, and, of course, running the #1 nudiezine in the world!  I’ve taken quite a hiatus from “new music” for a few months and I got to tell ya, it was fantastic. But, after getting a new mp3 player it was time to see what was going on out there in music land and oh my how depressing is it?  Of the top 100 artists being blogged about about a week or so ago, I knew maybe 3? Though that lifted my spirits, when I set out exploring all these news bits of data uploaded to the 4 trillion music blogs I was overcome with blahness. Like dear-jeebus-what-is-this-craparoni blahness.

But it ain’t all spaghetti with no sauce out there, there’s a few gems to be found, not that it has anything to do with this mixtape…  Nope.  Today’s mixtape started when I finally came across Phosphorescent.  Where were they may whole life? Fuck.  Specifically A Hundred Times Or More. NOM NOM NOM.  Anyways, found them, loved them, “Pretty” owned my heart and soul for about 2 weeks and lo & behold a mixtape was born.

But there’s more!  You see, I’m one lucky mother-fucker. I’ve got the best job in the world being a photographer & zinester, part of the reason is because I get to do what I love and have a fucking blast doing it, but the other part is the absolutely amazing friends I have made doing it!  Sheila, Cherry, Button, Cherie, Angela, Isabella, and on and on and on, so many of the zine’s nudiecranes I’m so happy to call my friends now.  Whether it’s going out for a burlesque show and some drinks or simply hanging at Chez Tsuru with arts & crafts time, we love these beautiful women!

“Button being Button”

So, with that and with this I’m dedicating this mixtape to all the nudiecranes out there!  From our closest friends to those where we may have only spent an hour together and I never heard from you again.  All of you are amazing & beautiful in your own way and it’s your uniqueness that each of you so perfect (and absolutely stunning)!  We love you guys!

Okay, enough mushy-pants, let’s get on with the music shall we as tsurufoto presents…

you so pretty next to me mixtape!

We say goodbye to tsururadio with accompanying mixtape……………….

Photography by Me

Well my friends, the time has come. The break the rules and have some fun. It’s been a nutty 4+ someodd years over here at tsururadio, we’ve gone through a lot of changes, did everything from mixtapes to vinyl rips, contests to out and out giveaways, we always tried to have fun and keep ourselves in check that we are just music bloggerin’, like 4 kabillion other kids out there on the wide world interconnected super highway of love canals.

But as the wise Canadian Nelly Furtado once sang, all good things come to an end.  But, as some other wise human probably said, for every door that closes another opens unless it’s the door to a serial killers basement in which you are probably fucked.

(Ir)regardless… every now and then I find its important to step back and take stock at what the fuck you are doing, then ask yourself, what needs to be cut, what needs to go, and what wants my time & energy.  I’ve been a photographer for the past 20ish years. Sometimes a hobbyist, other times an enthusiast, but always a passionist.  And for the past 6 months or so, I knew it was coming, I could feel it deep down in the cockles of my balls, that it was time to leave this crazy little thing called music bloggerin’ behind.

Yep.

We’re done.

Why?

A thousand reasons.  It could be all the white noise of music bloggerin’.  There are so many out there all blogging the same shit, you certainly don’t need this odd ball doing it too, eh? Twitter definitely didn’t help.  I love twitter, I really do, but when some crappy ass PR email hits your inbox and suddenly a thousand copy/paste tweeted blog posts hit the stream, well, let’s just say my desire to listen to it kind goes down the shitter with my morning poo.  But then again, I don’t do the PR thing. I don’t do the festival thing. I don’t get starry-eyed over the latest hyped band and what is at once my niche is also my downfall. I love music with all my heart, it’s been so critical to so much of what I am, what I do, what I think, but as much fun as I had sharing so many finds over the years, writing about music is just not my passion.

No… at the end of the day, it was my ego that a) kept it going and b) makes me want to shut it down.  You see, many of us bloggerin’ fools would probably call it day right now, it gets pretty chore-like at times, but the one thing that keeps you from pulling the plug and going to, say, write for a friend’s blog or whatever is the ego.  This is MY blog.  I’m famous in my teeny tiny slice of the internet for it.  Yeah, not easy to let that go.  But, here’s the thing for me that seeded in my brain last year.  I blog about music, but it’s not my music, these aren’t my creations.  The words are, sure, and to a smaller degree the mixtapes are a bit, but when my heart lies in takin’ pictures and making my zines (Issue #8 is over to the right & we just released our MICRO), things that are my creations, the little marks I’m leaving on this silly little globe (see, my ego again), the whole music bloggerin’ thing seemed silly for me.

There are people out there who have a genuine passion for writing about music and they are wonderful, even when they drive me bat shit, but as much as I thought I would become that, it just isn’t me.

Shhh… don’t cry because I’ve got good news.  Though tsururadio is dead, tsurufoto still lives!!!

Sure, it’s littered with all my nudie photography, but going forward, it will also be the site for all my mixtapes as well as the usual songs and viddies that inspire me in my little day-to-day.  WOOOT!  You can subscribe here:

And you know what? Maybe you aren’t all about nekkid people & nudiezines? That’s cool (weird, but cool). You can still find me tweeting & facebooking & google+ing all kinds of things musical! AND, of course, there’s still our super secret society of music geeks & freaks (shhh… it’s a secret).  So, you see? You aren’t losing a blog, you are gaining a more focused and happy Tsuru and that’s a good thing.

BUT.

It wouldn’t be very tsururific to drop a load of big news on ya without an accompanying mixtape, now would it?  Of course not.  Especially since we are the reigning king of the mixtape battles — Not once, not twice, but THRICE bitches!!! What was going to be just our “July Mixtape” became our final mixtape for the site… almost bitter sweet, eh? But, to get the full effect, I recommend just pushing play on the big fat fatty link right below of the full mixtape all mixed up with a few special secret gems and what not.  But, if you are just here for mp3s, you probably aren’t reading this and are already downloading the individual mp3s. It’s cool.

Alright. That’s it!  Last thing I want to say is thank you. Thank you to all the wonderful people I’ve met (online and in real life) and all of you who have left sweet comments here and there via the infinite number of methods the intertubes have given us.  Without you guys, this would’ve been dead ages ago.   I love you guys!  You are all amazing….  I’ll see you at the avenue for hanging out of your choice!

Enough mushy pants! Let’s get on with the music, shall we, as…………………………………

INSANITY!!!

As if that wasn’t enough TSURUFOTO action for you…. Check this! A local alternative weekly paper here in Columbus called Columbus Alive did a little article & interview with me and it’s on newstands AND on the intertubal highway of cyber love canals NOW!

Wow, right?  I know!

Now, in and of itself, all that is worth a post, imo, even if it is a whole bunch of self-pimping ego stroking, but as you know, we here at TSURURADIO wouldn’t present something without a sweet ass accompanying mixtape to goes along with it, eh?  Eh indeed.

And what a sweet dozy we got for you today!  About 120 minutes of new & old gems all tied up together in our special mixtaperin’ way we do things around here.  Now… There are a few quite new major label type o’ tracks poking around this mixtape (sorry, it’s what I’m feeling) so, to be on the safe side, we are offering this one up, not only blind (i.e. NO track listing – don’t worry, I got you a spoiler, cuz I love you) but also as one big playable mp3.

I actually love these. They play more like a genuine mixtape, like the million I made back in my youngin’ days.  Is it doped up with all the hyped and hot songs?  Well, it may not have the new Akron/Family song or maybe that Fleet Foxes tune that’s floating around, and it certainly doesn’t have Hey Rosetta, as I’ve never even heard of ‘em.  I had that lovely Chinatown from Destroyer on there, but then I remember I just had it on another mixtape.

So what do you get?  A femmetastic action packed mixtape featuring Joan As Police Woman, Adele, The Ronettes, PJ Harvey, Kori Pop, Laura Veirs, Rachel Goodrich, Nicole Atkins, and a quite a few other amazing women.  But don’t worry fellers, you can relax the falsetto for a few songs as we got a few twigs & berries covered too.

So, I’ll tell you what.  How about I shut the fuck up and get the music on, eh?  Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!  Ride your bikes, take some pictures, and if the creek don’t rise, we’ll see you all here come next week.  Until then, let’s go be heroes as….

TSURURADIO Presents..

TSURUFOTO NUDIEZINE issue no. 3: We Could Be Heroes Mixtape!!!

TSURURADIO Presents… The 25 Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums Of 2010 with Accompanying Mixtape (and Video)!!!!

December 3, 2010
By

Photography by ME!

Well oh well oh well… here we are, once again. at the “end” of another exciting and fun and musically awesome year! What? You don’t think this was a “good year for music”? You know what we always say about that right?

If you ain’t finding music your digging, you ain’t digging deep enough.

With the sheer (shear?) wealth of albums out there, from the label releases to the self-released albums on the bandcamps and blogs and world wide intertubals of love canals, I firmly with all my heart & penis that it’s impossible not to find, if you look, at least 10 albums that fill your ears & brain wires with love & joy & happy & WHEEE!

Because, as I see the list popping up, the suggestions for us here at TSURURADIO, the blips on the Facebooks & Twitterins, even after all the music we’ve talked about, shared, discussed, hated, etc, it’s barely & narry a tip in the metaphorical vagina or butthole — depending on your preferred orifice, my philosophy? There are no bad orifices.

This is a BIG post, taking days to write, written in Notepad, in my notepad, on scraps of paper, old receipts, the back of my hand, and on the right side of a witch’s teet, so how about we shut the fuck up with this intro jibber-jabber and get on with it as…

TSURURADIO Presents…

The 25 Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums Of 2010 with Accompanying Mixtape (and Video)!!!!

25? Yeah, not intentional, built a mixtape of all my favourites, counted them up, found we had 25 albums. That’s our most even number yet! Inching ever so closer to the mainstream! Oh noes! But, clocking in at #25, the mammer-jammer that just made the cut goes to…

.

.

25. Allo Darlin’ by Allo Darlin’

Twee boy-girl pop and a nod to Pinkerton? Yeah, I’m in. This sacchrine sweet album of polaroids, love, chili, and what is most likely (I mean, it kinda has to be) a ukelele pulled my tender heart strings and gave me three cavities! But I still love it…

.

24. The Violent Blue by Electric President

A bit eeeeelectronical for my normal happy trail, but there was something smooth & easy, kinda like a Sunday morning, about this. Like a late winter ride of glorious harmonies & beautiful melodies, sun still setting early, the sky thick with the colour of grey…. Mmm

.

23. Volume Two by She & Him

No-brainer. Imma zooey-sexual.

Can’t help it. If she put an album out of her and Will Ferrell as Buddy singing “It’s Cold Outside” 10 times, it would probably still make the list. Sorry. Get over it. Her voice and her songs bring a smile to my face.

.

22. Wilderness Heart by Black Mountain

There’s an old school Stone Temple Pilots flavoured with strong female vocals meets some alt.country & blues meets classic rock bad assness that douche-nuggets like Kid Rock wishes they could wish to wish to try to want to wish to make.

Yeah! Snaps, indeed!

In your face!

.

21. Avi Buffalo by Avi Buffalo

Young little whipper-snappers make a gem of an album, including what may be many people’s song of the year, “What’s It In For?”! It’s a diverse album that seems to live in the treble range — high pitched voices and lots of chiming guitars.

Time for the slightly condensending music cricket comment, “I predict great things for this band in the future!” But yeah, I really can’t wait to see where these guys go next!

.

20. Flamingo by Brandon Flowers

Indie-cred…. DESTROYED!!!!

Yeah? Well.. EAT ME! Brandon Flowers goes Neil Diamond and I love this Vegas-inspired cheeseball!

.

19. Oooh La La by Crash Test Dummies

Indie-cred restored? I mean, is Crash Test dummies so post-mainstream, so post-US-one-hit-wonder, that they are now super-indie? There’s certainly less mainstream than Arcade Fire, right? Or am I just another aging fan boy?

Brad gets a bunch of children’s instruments, gets Ellen, and makes a beautiful and kinda bittersweet album. Keep on trucking your baritone whiskey drinking Canuck!

.

18. Meet Me At Muster Station by PS I Love You

Indie-cred officially restored.A new find, via Shoey, a new love affair…. a noisy rock love affair that is… will it be a love to remember (shouldn’t they all?) or one I’ll soon forget? Maybe it’s the newness, the sweaty discovery that permeates my ranking?

Who cares?

Great fucking album.

.

17. Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph by Frog Eyes

Oh my. What an album! As yelpy and sporatic and spastic and bombastic and mood-fluctuation-inducing as you would expect from Frog Eyes. These guys are on a different plane two dimensions away from Sunset Rubdown, keeping them in the shadows, out of popularities sight. If I can steal a cliche as it’s so literally true, these guys march to a different drummer and it’s unreal.

.

16. Teen Dream by Beach House

Speaking of “unreal”, with this beauty from Beach House we fall face-first into a gorgeous dream land… If not forgotten — seriously, in blogland years, this came out years ago! — this should be on the top of many lists. It’s daydream escapism at it’s finest…

.

15. Beauregard by Pepper Rabbit

Speaking of dreamy…. what about the organic dreamscapes of Pepper Rabbit? (Ir)regardless of how accurate that description may be, this is just a beautiful album… From the opening notes that sound as if they are being played down the hall of a long-abandoned house, to what is one of my personal songs of the year, “Older Brother”, which sounds like a memory buried in a dream, Pepper Rabbit crafted something special.

Hey… can I say “dream” one more time?

DREAM!

.

14. Big Echo by Morning Benders

Though we LOVED their last album, it was this one that got them all the blog love out there, gave them momentum, and made them a point of conversation amongst all of us in Indieland!

Good for them!

These guys keep their big fat hair toe dipped in the bucket of the past, then balance it with living quite solidly in the present! You like that? I said absolutely nothing useful in that sentence! Hooray for music cricketing!!!

.

13. Congratulations by MGMT

Oh MGMT, how you pissed off the critics and your dancin’ friends by going from making a dance record that enjoyed a couple songs off of to a trippy psychedelic gem that is fucking amazing. Follow your heart guys, not the critics, you may not find mainstream success, you’ll find plenty of personal happiness & tons of artistic integrity, and, in my book, that’s worth more than all the P4K 10.0s in the world…..

.

These blurbs are funny… Okay, let’s move on, time for a “big ticket” item!

.

12. High Violet by The National

Great album, eh? From the first hey-is-this-a-bad-stream-rip-sounding “Terrible Love” I was hooked. But it was the roadtripping (through Ohio, of course) “Bloodbuzz Ohio” that got me listening in the first place. The emotional music with the dry Morphine-esque voice juxtaposition — Ooo… big word! Look, it’s The National. For many, if Suburbs isn’t number 1, this will be. National fans and Arcade Fire fans have a lot in common, you emotional bastards!

*smooch*

.

11. Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You by Lightspeed Champion

Holy shit, where you been LC? I avoided the hell out of you with your first album (sorry, that album cover just screamed “Hey Tsuru, RUUUN!” but man, was I wrong. And with Life Is Sweet! I was even wrongerer! Your over the top theatrics pulled at my heartstrings and opened the curtain of my wrongheadness to your amazingly talented world! Wonderful!

.

Holy shit guys! We are at Number 10???? Wow! Let’s keep this mother truckin’, eh?

.

10. Heart Of My Own by Basia Bulat

Raw, organic, passionate, Bulat and her quavering powerful voice created a folk gem! Now, I’m not talking tender and quiet introspective folk (though there is some of that in there), think more like Irish/Scottish folk, except from Canada, which can fly at you faster than you wish you can river dance.

Stunning album. Punches you in the gut stunning.

.

9. I Learned The Hard Way by Sharon Jones & Dap-Kings

MS… SHARON JONES! MS… SHARON JONES!!! MS!!! SHARON!!! JONES!!!!!

.

8. The Suburbs by The Arcade Fire

Yeah… I lived in the suburbs a little during some parts of my childhood and again during parts of my adult life. Suburban kids think they got it tough, “FML”, etc, and all that. Hate your boring parents, rebel, move out, “straighten up”, become your parents, time to eat turkey, watch football, and hang up the lights, rinse, and repeat. It’s tradition, BLAH!

Arcade Fire captured it pretty good, wouldn’t you say? I do… Well, except that “Month Of May” song. Oof. Totally kept this out of the top 5, to be honest.

.

7. Sunset Psalms by The Shivers

Oh man, this one took me by surprise… read some blip, sounded interesting, had no idea it would be this quirky Lou-Reed-esque bluesy-awesomeness. There’s a swagger about these guys, dripping of sex and probably some drugs, the good drugs, the looove drugs. I don’t know but man, yeah….

.

6. Forgiveness Rock Record by Broken Social Scene

Big bands can make a big mess of an album, Broken Social Scene somehow has the ability to do this yet somehow make it all work. They revel in the chaos of 4,000 musicians “doing their thing” and I revel in their revelry!

WOOT!!!

.

Top 5! Getting there! Here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! La la la la la………….

.

5. La La Land by Plants And Animals

Yeah, I’m obsessed with “Bye, Bye, Bye”, it’s showed up on how many mixtapes now? But I don’t LOOOOVE their last album, I like it sure, but it’s not love love, you know? So though hopes were high, expectations weren’t when La La Land came to my metaphorical doorstep, but holy spring-rollies! From the awesomely clumsy “Tom Cruz” to the 1-2 punch of “Swinging Bells” & “American Idol” to the end, it’s got a epic classic rock capital-A Album rocker groove to it that just never lets up! So good…

.

4. The Sleep Tape by The High Wire

Nervous strings start us off on the dreamy journey filled lulling beats & rhythms, enveloping harmonies, whispering vocals, and a clustercuss of imagery that have gripped our minds since we first heard this on a whim (I liked the album art).

.

3. July Flame by Laura Veirs

There is only one word I can think of to describe this album we first heard way back in aught nine when it quietly drip-dropped into our ears. It’s that kinda douchey music cricket kinda word, but man is it every “apropos”! This album is…….. Sublime.

.

2. Together by New Pornographers

Ah, I remember when this leaked… long before I got my aging grubby hands on the vinyl with that glorious 12″ x 12″ artwork (oh my), a friend of mine who shall remain anonymous (as google searching for this was blocked) had sent me his copy, track by track, via email. So, as I received each track, in order, I listened.

Two words, my friends: Goosebumps & grins.

From the opening strings Duh-nuh-nuh to the final epic conclusion I was smitten. Add in some horns, tons of Neko and Dan and all the other power-orchestral pop ingrediants and oh me oh my!!!!

.

But… as much as I love this album, one album stood above, stood tall, dominating, crushing the competition! So, without further adieu, our number one album is…

.

1. Light Chasers by Cloud Cult!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, Light Chasers is our No. 1 album of the year, top dog, head cheese (ew)!

For the 2nd year in a row, a concept album has taken top spot, taken my heart, and literally blew my mind. Concept albums are tough enough to pull off, but without a full narrative, just the idea of chasing the light, chasing happiness, chasing a freedom, from sadness and misery, from the herded life we plop ourselves in, by opening our eyes and our potentials, and doing it in a way that is at times bombastic, at times tranquil, and at times stunning… Yeah, after about a week or so with this album, I knew I had my top pick, that every challenger that was to come after it had a tough, if not impossible, battle ahead of it…

All this INSPITE of the fact they won’t release albums on vinyl. Yeah, I know, environmental stuff, but man, it’s vinyl! Vinyl is forever and in a good way! Oh well, as los French say, kest la vye… or is that say la vee? ;)

Congratulations Cloud Cult! You win!!!! Expect your completely recyclable, made from recylced LPs made from recycle vinyl shipped in recycled boxes in recyclable trucks to your recycled house any day now!

WOO!  That was fun!  How about a round of applause to all our winners!!!

Nice… nice..

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West… Hey Kanye, we made a nekkid video too!

TSURUFOTO Presents… Tyler & Meiko At Capital Motel (Alternate Edit & NSFW) from TSURUFOTO

That’s right Kanye! You aren’t the only mammer-jammer who can make a sexy video! — First Edit without the driving scenes here!

What a TSURUFOTO-tastic weekend! Holy crap! 4, count ‘em, 4 photoshoots! Two with Tyler & Meiko (the results of the first one can be seen above in our first foray into videoeoeos). And then a 2nd shoot in the morning and 2 more on Sunday for our soon-to-be award winning seires / calendar oiseaux retros de tsurufoto!

Hot damn, eh?

Been crazy, but not nearly as crazy as the intertubals have been with the leak/release of Kanye West’s new album…

To ignore this album would be wrong. I’m no fan of the raps, but I am a fan of music and pop culture and etc. According to Kanye, this is possibly the most important album of the year/decade/existence of all music. It only seems fair that we listen & discuss the whole album, together, organically, and share our inner-most thinkerins, right? So, here we go! Let’s push play and see what the good lord Kanye giveth, and what we taketh away….

1. “Dark Fantasy”

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.. So, Kanye eshews de rigeurs of an obligatory “Intro” bit to the traditional rap album, instead puts out a somewhat anti-climatic song to lead us off. The rap & the rhythm is smooth and the singing (Kanye’s) is off but I kinda like that fact, using the auto-tune for the chorus bits… One track down and I’m left intrigued!

2. “Gorgeous” (featuring Kid Cudi & Raekwon)

A repetious retro-guitar is running the show along with some lo-fi-styled vocaled rap. He’s singing about himself & hip-hop, it’s very “me-centric”, but it’s Kanye so you don’t worry about it. Musically, it’s still pretty chill, and the chorus sounds like a bunch of guys who shouldn’t be singing choruses singing a chorus. This one is pretty meh. On 2nd thought, as this is a long one, yeah, the “me-centric” part is starting to get old on this one. Ready for “POWER”.

3. “Power” (featuring Dwele)

Oh yeah, we are bringing the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack feel on this one. Was this pulled from some battle-related period piece? Not bad! Oh shit… did he just sample King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man”???? Okay, you just got an extra star on that…. But note to Kanye, if you want critics to love you, do NOT go prog. Critics do not like prog. Period.

Back to the song… pretty good! Powerful & moody, but yeah, gives you visions of something grand, battlefields, wars, etc. Nice.

4. “All of the Lights” (Interlude)

Oh no, is this a ballad? Oh, it’s a pretty interlude. Sorry.

5. “All of the Lights”

Here we go, bay-beh. If you removed the beat, you have a pretty basic Top 40 radio song, something VH1 would play the video of starring whoever the guest female vocal is, all morning long – do they still do morning videos? But you can’t remove the high-pitched beat and it’s the curve ball to an otherwise okay song, bay-beh. Oh wait, we are on the bridge now, bay-beh. Nevermind, back to the song, but a miminaled version with a woo-woo in the background. Yeah, okay, bay-beh, it’s alright now, bay-beh, let’s turn up the lights now, bay-beh, and get on with track 6…

6. “Monster” (featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj & Bon Iver)

Monster, and my ipod says that Bon Iver is on this, as well as Jay-Z, and other famous people. I think we are back on a me-centric song, I think. It ain’t easy being Kaney, apparently. Okay… I can see people thing this song is their jam. I can see people playing this in the car on the way to or from “the club” sing along, emphasizing “mother-fuckin’” every time someone says it, etc. But meh. Even Jay-Z (yeah, I recognize his voice) is bitching about his own creations. ugh. This song would’ve been better if Flight Of The Conchords had performed it. Damn it, 1 and 1/2 minutes to go?? Moving on…

7. “So Appalled” (featuring Jay-Z, Pusha T, Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beatz & The RZA)

Oh wait, I’ve heard this ree-dick-kull-less song before. I think I gave this a 1/2 wheelie or something…. God, I’m sorry, I’ve got to move on. Ree-dick-kull-less indeed.

8. “Devil in a New Dress” (featuring Rick Ross)

Unh! Unh! I hear some vinyl snap, crackle, pop, this could be something. Sweet sampling action going on here. I like it when Kanye actually sings, it’s so flawed & childish, I love it. I like this song. I’m not a big fan of the current rap over someone singing, everyone mixed up nice and loud, thing going on these days, but if you are going to do it, this is the way to do it… This song is rough, off, and I like it.

9. “Runaway” (featuring Pusha T)

Making our way, already to track nine, the one with that ree-dick-kull-less music video / mini-movie. Okay, I forgot what the song sounds like and without any visuals, it’s just me and my brain. Here we go….

Ooo… nice start! LOL, have a toast for douchebags? Love it. For the jerk-offs even? Nice! Okay, I officially love this song. Yeah, it’s still me-centric, but it’s the way it should be, not just how hard it is to be so god-damn awesome, but about him when you bust down those ree-dick-kull-less-lee over-compensating shells & bravados he puts up.

I could be completely wrong, but this sounds like the real Kanye, the one he never puts out on twitter. The one that uses lower-case letters…

Yeah, I love this song. I kinda don’t want to move on to track 10. Fortunately, I got a 2 minute instrumental ending going on.

*happy sigh*

10. “Hell of a Life”

Pretty cool, ee-lectronic retro-y kinda goodness about pussy & religion. Sure, why not? I’m in! A bit over the top over the end with the cliche choir add, but still, pretty tight!

11. “Blame Game” (featuring John Legend)

Ipod says Legend is on this one and hey, sure enough, there’s the piano & breathy vocals. “I’ll call you bitch, for short”? Huh? Interesting. Sometimes I feel like Kanye’s got a South Park-like obsession with dropping cuss words, almost feeling forced sometimes, but over 11 tracks (so far), I think I’m beginning to see that’s just how he rolls. Alright, now they got some guy in a pitch-modified voice — is that Kanye? — bouncing from left to right to left to right ear, jibber-jabbering about or to some girl.

12. “Lost in the World” (featuring Bon Iver)

Auto-tune. I got to tell you, I’m reeeeeally starting to hate auto-tune, even when it’s done so prettily as it is here on the intro to this song. Seriously, it’s beautiful but I’m over it. That’s wrong to think, of course, a tool is a tool is a tool and using the tool, regardless of the popularity of it to achieve a desired effect, as long as artistic integrity is held in check, should never be rebuked but here I am, being a hypocrite, even on a song I’m enjoying, wishing beyond wishing that Bon Iver would’ve just sang the fucking intro normal style…………

13. “Who Will Survive in America”

The end, here we are, interesting trip we took today, it had it’s up and it’s downs, but as it is in today’s musicsphere, a Kanye West album is an event, even if it’s only an event because he thinks it’s an event and by me, reviewing it now, I’m only adding to the pile of ego.

Is it a good or bad album? Depends on who’s listening and what your expectations are. I imagine this will be a polarizing album though as Kanye is a polarizing person. Most everyone, myself included, have an opinion of him which is an odd thing when you think about it.

Even with all his PR crap, his own tweets, his albums & rants & etc, we still only “know” about 1% of Kanye and it’s that 1% we judge the other 99… Human nature I suppose. But, (ir)regardless, it seems fitting I should let Kanye have the last word, so with this and with that, cheers! T.

Oh my! This weekend is going to be TSURUFOTO TSURURIFIC!!!! So, excuse me whilest I pimperin’ myself out for a sec or two, eh?

1. I’m working on this bad-ass vintage series for a calendar, well this weekend is the final 3 shoots! After this, it’s time to assemble with my font collaborator Jillian and get that bad boy up on the internettals of love tubulars for your datin’ needs! WOOT!

2. With one of the shoots, I’m trying my hand at video! It may be an epic failure of epic portions of epicnosity but I got an idea, I got two incredible people who are willing to play along, so I GOTS to give it a go! If I can pull this off, keep an eye out for the viddy soon!

3. I’ve decided it’s time to try something even newerererer………… That’s right, my friends, I’m goin’ into the boudoir business, but TSURUFOTO-style!!!

i.e….. NOT expensive & NOT glamour-shots! TSURUFOTO-style means polaroids & vintage-style prints, simple, fun, easy-peasy, beautiful, & priced where you don’t need to have $1000 to have someone take a photo of you! We got the Facebook page started and an early-version of a website up!

IF we can get them printed quick enough, we’ll be offering coupons in the goodiebags at Viewfinder on November 20 & 21 at Junctionview!

WOOOOOO!!!!!

Exciting stuff, eh? As if that wasn’t enough (and sometimes it certainly feels like it is), I finally got a sweet idea on how to display our infamous Born In A Bottlerocket series! If I can pull THAT off, who knows? Maybe some adventurous & brave gallery will give us a wall or two for a show, eh?

Oh man. I’m BEAT just thinking about it. Between that and closing in on 6,000 miles on the bike this year, honestly I need all the music I can get just to keep me sane so thank the lardy lard that Beuregard by Pepper Rabbit made it’s way into my ear canals..

Did you know that the difference between an ear canal and an ear river is that the canal is man made? Mmm… rivers of wax.

Beuregard is beureutiful! There’s an element of that whole dreamy beach housey thingy thing that’s been floating around the intertubes since earlier this year, but somehow, I feel like this one feels more organic. Pianos and mandolins and woodwinds and banjos are the instruments from which their dreamscapes are made.

Ew… anyone else think of cheesy crap like dreamcatchers when you read the word “dreamscapes”? lol…

Okay, that’s pretty epic. But alas and know, there’s no Navajo spirit in this release, it’s beach boys and sweet dreams, more Cali than Mesa. And it’s just beautiful…. So load it up, warsh yer worries all away and have a wonderful wonderful weekend, my cranes, we’ll see you before long!!

Did you see the new banner????? Yep, spent a little time hanging it up last night in preparations for…

wait for it…

MIXTAPES WEEK!!!!! YAY!!!

Very exciting, eh? I KNOW!!!

Now, before we get started, I’ve got some very exciting news from the world of TSURUFOTO (the photography wing of Tsuru Industries, lol). A few months back, I was interviewed by a saucy online & now print publication called Devora Ran out of Mexico. Absolutely fantastic — and extremely NSFW as the site challenges our concepts of sexuality and photography — magazine and collected imagery! Well….

The article is LIVE!

CHECK IT OUT!

Though the magazine is in Spanish, that link should be to the English version. Though, my recommendation, is to go to the Spanish one then have google or babelfish translate it, it makes for a very interesting read as we go from Tsuruglish to Spanish to automated-English and really, that’s funny shit!

Anyways, I hope you enjoy, not only Devora Ran, but the article & interview & photography by your boy Tsuru!

But… as much as a Monday full of naked people is a heaping cup of awesome, you are hear for the kick off of Mixtapes Week, so kick it off we shall!!!

Got a fun one for you! Society member winter1610, after experiencing frustration from his friends over at his blog at the obscurity of some of his sweet mixtapes, decided to build a sure-fire crowd pleaser… The results? A sweet & fun 12 song gem filled with a few familiars, a remix & a mash-em-up or two to get the week moving the right direction!

WOOT!

Now, this is just the beginning this week as hopefully, between our community, the paper crane collective, and myself, you’ll be inindated with so many mixtapes, you may just have to unbutton your metaphorical pants to make room!!!

Mmm….. Alright! Let’s do this thing as…

Winter bikes and Wilderness Heart by Black Mountain!

Photography of Crystal O. by me!!!

I’ll tell ya, nothing cures an upset stomach like riding a bike through some gross heat & humidity! Pedal & sweat that shit OUT! WOO! Feeling nearly 100% as we kick into this sunny last-gas of summer Tuesday! Almost time to pull out the arm-warmers & time to make sure that winter bike is tuned up and ready to go!

CYCLOCROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna see her?

Yep, it’s the cheapest decent cyclocross bike I could find (sold off the old 50lb mountain bike I put studs on and road last winter), and this weekend I spent a little time getter her all tuned and ready. The only missing piece is the studded tires — seriously… if you are doing some winter cycling on snow or ice, follow the link for the best & most affordable studded tires I’ve found, last year’s were amazing!

I’m actually getting excited for the challenge! I rode all last winter, but I hope to really keep this mojo going…. I’ve crossed the 4,000 mile mark for the year and I’ve got 4 months left to get another 2K in to hit my 6,000 mile goal! Going to be tough if winter comes early! EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay… enough about bikes, most, if not all, of you could care less. What YOU care about is, more likely than not, los musica and my friends, we got the los musicas for you today!! Uh-huh! With Wilderness Heart by Black Mountain!

Image

Ah, you see, THIS is how I like my classic rock, fresh, fun, ever-so-slightly proggy, and ass-KICKIN’! And, for the most part, this album rocks. Yeah, there’s your quieter tracks like “Radiant Heart” but just soon as you settle down, “Roller Coaster’s” fuzzy Detroit-style bass line kicks in and we are 70′s metal heads all over again!

My favourite track is actually the lead-off gem “The Hair Song”, there’s something awesomely familiar and refreshing about it at the same time. Like something Stone Temple Pilots would’ve recorded for Purple, mixed in with some Jethro Tull, and modernized for 2010! Yeah… take THAT music critics!

Great & very very fun album!

We’re back, we’re fucking exhausted, and we’re listening to Moon Food by Unbunny

Photography by me

So so tired. Weekend in Phoenix to see my family was wonderful, but some issues down in the society – seriously, board issues while on vacation? not fun – along with a long flight back that landed me in Columbus after 1am, then being wide awake when I got home led to a whopping, WHOPPING, 3 hours sleep.

Oh my.

Gonna be a rough day. But, while I sat in the confines of an US Airways for 3 hours in the dark, I finally turned my iPod wheel over to Moon Food by Unbunny, a favourite band by eternally wonderful music suggester Lysol down in the society!

So, it was in the dark cabin, in the isolation that is an airplane crammed with, just, people, that I gave this a first whirl. I was amazed. If Neil Young was no longer making music, long since dead from an overdose or suicide or whatever, I’d say, “hey team-o, Unbunny is what Neil Young would sound like if he was alive today!”

Not sure why I need him dead in the scenario, just adds more flavour?  (Ir)regardless, it’s the voice of Unbunny, that high pitched whiny Neil Young voice, hard to ignore, but then add in the folk-country-rock and the comparisons are tough to not reach out to in a blog post.  But, of course, if this was just some Neil Young imitator, we probably wouldn’t be as excited as we are (or can be, considering my level of sleepiness).  Yeah, while it, ahem, harkens back to my ears, there’s something decidedly (good word) modern in his approach.  Take the lead-off track, simple strum-strum affair and melody, but the electric guitar playing off to the back and right, something so simple and possibly unnecessary adds a wonderfully accenting layer taking the song out of the mundane (Ooo… another good word).  It’s these little nuggets of flavour that really lift the album for me.

On days like this, where there’s not enough coffee in the world to get you moving, this album is just perfect.  Thanks again Lysol for the wonderful suggestion!  Check out the first two tracks, then head over to Bandcamp, listen & BUY the rest!

Photography “Florida Strawberry Festival” by Me!

WE’RE BACK!  Whee! Our little weekend down in Flo-Ri-Da was perfectly perfect, just what the good medicine man ordered.  Came in to a rainy Friday which caused a bit of detox and relaxation before the weather turned PERFECT, and I mean PERRRRRRFFFFFECT!  Seriously, in the 60s, breezy, & super sunny and, as you can see from the photo above, it was the last weekend for Florida Strawberry Festival!  Now, I’m not a huge “festival guy”, hell, SXSW sounds painful to me and I’m a music geek, but something about wandering around Florida’s most awesome collection of, uh, people with Baby, Mama & Sister Tsuru, and my young nephew was just too much.

There were strawberries (the reason for the season, but the Strawberry Shortcake was not nearly as good as I remember as a wee-lad)..

NOTE: Photos via TsuruBride’s & my Tumblr

There were rides (nearly got sick on a kiddie-ride, seriously), including one that simulates what it would be like to be a hamster in a ball on water…

There was carnie-food, caramel apples, funnel cakes, fried-everything, etc, etc

And, of course, there was the midway games where I, yes ME, won Baby her very first carnie-prize ever!   A cheap little Beanie-Baby-styled stuffed dog by hitting a balloon with a dart.  Novi got a goldfish by my mom getting a ping pong in a bowl, a goldfish that later that night their cat, who I call “Big Moosh” as it looks JUST LIKE a larger version of our cat Mushaboom, tried to eat.

There was arts, there was crafts…

(Made that all by myself!), and there was relaxation & good times…. it was perfect.

Then last night we fly back into 30/40s & misty rainy weather?  Ugh.  AND work??? Double Ugh.  Welcome back to O-H… I-O.  But that’s okay, because just as quick as the cold & wet hit us, so did we wake up to a big wallop of sunshine via the newly leaked via NPR full album stream web rip of Volume II by She & Him!!!

Image

The word they give She & Him is “sun-soaked” and that’s a pretty good one, I’m sure 99% of the reviewers will us it, it feels right.  It feels sunny, for the most part, which, considering the weather we came home to, it just what we need to keep that March Florida feeling going, but to blanketly — is that a word? — call it sunny isn’t quite doing it justice.  The word that comes to mind for me is “hearken”, this is hearken pop.  Pop that hearkens back to by-gone eras, a time in, oh, I don’t know, late 70s, early 80s, when Dolly Parton & Charlie Rich were bringing various mixtures of pop + honky-tonk + R&B, but then you add in flavours and flourishes of girl-groups and you got She & Him. Volume II picks up just where Volume I left off and given the names of the albums, that’s exactly what it should be.  It’s comfort food, adorable & sweet & delicious comfort food, yes……  She & Him is ice cream.

So, while other may compare She & Him to the sun, I will compare them to that frozen treat on the sun-filled day. What am I talking about?  I have no idea.  This much I do know, M. Ward has inspired me…  See this photo?

And see him in their video for “In The Sun”?

Well, given that I’m just a few years from 40 and mustaches are still “in style”, I figured this may be my last chance to grow lip hair.  It will be an uncomfortable and patchy affair, and in the end, I’ll probably shave it all off before it gets a real chance to begin, but for now, the great facial hair growth experiment of 2010 has begun.  Expect photo updates for as long as I can keep it going soon.  Right now, I’m at just under a week of growth, so not much to report yet.

Where was we?  Oh yeah, She & Him.  My only complaint on this absolutely lovely album?  The opening track, “Theives”… guys, you REALLY should’ve ended the album on that one.  It’s bittersweet, it’s got grand finale feelings, and then “In The Sun” is the perfect lead-off track!  What were you guys thinking?????

Ah, oh well.  It’s not my album, so I shan’t complain.

Well, as random as this post is looking, and even with this weather, I’ll tell ya, it’s good to be back & it’s good to finally have She & Him, so let’s get listening, eh?

TSURUTALES, The Brothers Grimm, and Say Us by Zeus!

February 25, 2010
By

Photography by manelidou

Man, the Grimm Brothers are some fucked up motherfuckers. As some of you know, I’m working on a new series of photographs, currently called TSURUTALES (yes, I know I need a better name for it, but it will due for now), where I’m retelling folktales, fairy tales, children’s stories, and even some lyrics.  One of the best parts of doing this is, not only all the creative arts & crafts times making the minimal costuming needed to tell the story, but the research into all the tales out there.  It’s unreal.  I’ve got 3 massive books and tons of intertubal searching and I’ve only barely touched the service.  Every culture has a million of their own stories about every damn thing possible. It’s truly amazing and fun.

WELL.  This weekend I’m shooting an odd little story by the Brother’s Grimm called The Little Donkey.

Here’s the gyst of it.  King & queen want a kid, but are having trouble.  God finally gives her a kid, but it comes out a donkey.  She doesn’t want anything to do with it, but the king raises it as a prince anyway.  He’s pretty happy, loves & plays music, etc, until he sees his reflection one day and realizes he’s a donkey and becomes pretty depressed.  He decides to wonder the world until he comes across a hot princess who, with a surprising bit of bravado, he winds convincing father to let him marry her.

Here’s where it gets weird.

Wedding night, time for sweet lovins, HE STRIPS OFF HIS DONKEY SKIN to show he’s a hot dude!  Princess, originally all kinds of freaked out, is not all hot and bothered and happy as a clam.  Guards see this, tell the king who, in his perviness, watches the next night, sees for himself and burns the skin.

Donkey man wakes up the next morning, sees the skin is gone, freaks out & decides he should leave, but the king says not to, that everything is cool now.  He lives happily ever after and when his father-in-law & dad die, he inherents both kingdoms & leads a “glorious life”.

The end.

Wha?

Yeah, I know… Don’t you wish you could’ve been there when the story took the “skin off” direction?

“Okay… here’s what we do, we have him take off his skin and show he’s a hottie.”

“Duuuude… wha?”

“Yeah, you see, then she’ll fall in love with him!”

“But… if he was a person all this time, why not just be the person early on when he sees his reflection?”

“Fuck, I don’t know, who cares man, it’s like magic and shit.”

“Oh dude.. yeah!  Pass me more of that opium, bro!”

Or something along that lines.  Fucked up, eh?  Anyways, the shoot, if all goes well, should be a grieving queen and a dancing donkey!  Got the donkey mask, just need to make a crown and scepter this week.  So, keep an eye out on TSURUTALES for an update!!  WOOT!

By the way… you know, if you are in & about Columbus and like what I’m doing at TSURUTALES and want to retell a story with me, send me an email and let’s bounce some ideas back and forth!  After The Little Donkey, I’ve got the wicked witch from Wizard Of Oz, the swan from Ugly Duckling, and I’m even doing an Alice shoot (the movie, be damned) with a tea party in the woods.  But maybe you have your own childhood or folktale you think would be great.  Drop me a line!

Oh and speaking of arts & crafts, how about that Say Us by Arts & Crafts’ Zeus???

Oh c’mon, that was an EPIC segue and you know it!  I knew I was going to write on these guys the first time through the album late Friday I think.  This album is easy to love.  It’s got this late-Beatles/John Lennon-y thing going on and it’s a blast!  Really intelligent pop-rock with a big fat toe in the past.  My guess is that some people might cling on to the Beatles-thing a bit too much, taking away internet-points, but really, we are all a culmination of our experiences & environment, processed through our genetics, it’s not like they are covering “Come Together” for the 1,443,559th time, this is original music with a keenness for rock’s heritage and it’s fucking brilliant.  Retro AND original, a rare feat.

Yeah, yeah…  just listen and enjoy for yourself!

Photography “Olive – Motel Brat” by Me!

Okay, before we get on with today’s little obsession, got a little TsuruNation Domination Actuation Celebration news for ya.  Specifially, some TSURUFOTO updates!

First up, Zivity.  As of yesterday, I’m officially a published photographer on Zivity!  WHEE!  Why? Because my first set with Olive went live, baby!

HOORAY!!!

It’s a fun set called “Olive, Motel Brat” where boredom and being a, well, brat get the best of Olive in a shitty neon motel just outside Columbus.  We are both really proud of it, so if you are on Zivity, go give Olive (and me) all your love by voting for it NOW!!!  We really, really appreciate it.

Second… as soon of you may have noticed from a few mixtape covers, I’ve been working on a new aesthetic in my photography (you can see on the mixtape cover  here), I even built a topsecret TSURUFOTOMATIC REFLEX 5000 apparatus to assist in the creation of these images! Well, with this new look, I’ve started a new series involving the retelling of folktales & children’s stories from any and every culture, as well as the occasional timeless lyric or two.  I’m absolutely in love with how well it’s coming, so much so, I’ve started a separate blog to chronicle my favourite image from each shoot called, appropriately enough, TSURUTALES!

So far, we’ve done Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, The Death Stone, my favourite lyric (currently on the front page), and a couple more.  Next up is a The Lady Of  Gollerus (a mermaid),  The Ugly Duckling, and then Alice InWonderland (Alice will have to wait until it warms up a bit).  So so excited!!!

Now, the site is NSFW, but the images are pretty distorted so unless you are really (really, really) sensitive to nude women, you should be fine.  Otherwise, go check it out, I would LOVE some feed back & criticism!

Last thing, kinda for shits & giggles, but what the hell, right?  I designed a t-shirt based on the question that seems to be on the tip of EVERYONE’S tongues these days…

HAHA!  Just a fun little design for all you crane addicts out there that I threw up on Zazzle.  Do I expect to sell any?  No clue, I think I get like a dollar or two for each sale, so that would go to hosting this site, but really it’s not about money, it’s about wearing it and receiving the odd looks as you walk down the street while people try to figure out what the hell your shirt is saying!  But YOU know what it’s saying, right?

I guess that’s it for TsuruNation domination now, but keep out for some new endeavours by Ms. TsuruBride soon!!

Man, exciting stuff, eh?  Almost as exciting as — are you ready for this segue — today’s Twofer Tuesday!!!  First up is the very Google un-friendly jj’s jj n° 3!

I think Secretly Canadian said that if n° 2 was the perfect summer album, n° 3 is the one for winter.  I tend to agree, it’s still very jj, but there’s something icy, snowy, covered in white about this one.  There’s no warm sounds of Africa savannahs this time around.  No, this time, you can almost see the air coming off her Swedish voice…

Some JJ linkage? Not google friendly, but here’s the label links: Sincerely Yours & Secretly Canadian

It’s Twofer Tuesday, so you know we ain’t done yet!!  Because coming in right along side jj over there on the other side of the big blue, except this time coming out of Denmark,  is Trespassers by Kashmir!

Here’s how clueless I am…  According to Wiki, these guys have been around since 1991!  What?  That’s when I graduated fucking high school, and I never heard of them???  That’s just bananas on a stick, man.  It goes to show you, know matter how much you think you know music, there’s another band out there you’ve never heard of….

Now, these guys aren’t quirky dub whatever and from what I can tell by searching around, not a big “bloggable band”.  Huh.  Odd.  I love this, these guys are big sounds, something that can fill up a fucking arena and probably has for all I know.  Big sounds, big emotions, big climatic melodies and layers but without, amazingly, dropping in a giant slice of cheese. That alone is a pretty big feat.

Apparently they are major label (yikes) and I think “Mouthful Of Wasps” is their single, so let’s just stick with that, eh?  Yeah.

01 Mouthful Of Wasps
02 Intruder
03 Mantaray
04 Pallas Athena
05 Still Boy
06 Bewildered In The City

09 Danger Bear
10 The Indian (That Dwells In This Chest)

Ah and cool, a little video of them making the album cover?? Sweet! Thanks graf!

Cheers!
