What IS proper blogger twitter etiquette? And we also discuss Dear Companion by Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore

I’d like to pose a question to you about twitter etiquette…  So, like everyone’s twitter account I’m sure, my follower numbers fluctuate more than a flux capacitor… No big deal, tis life. But then today I realized a couple of the “bigger blogs” have stopped following me, one’s I thought I had built a report (“re-pore” that is, not sure of the sp?) with…

Now, that, in and of itself, doesn’t bother me too much, but it did get me thinking, as things like this tend to do.

What IS proper blogger twitter etiquette?

In my relatively short time being earnestly active on twitter I’ve come across a few “twitter-stereotypes”, if you will.  For example… Some tweet every. single. god. damn. nuance. of. their. life. I remember one music festival, it was probably SXSW, this one blog, one of the “big blogs” tweeted EVERYTHING.  That he’s standing around waiting for a band, that some famous dude just came in, that he was hungry, that he’s eating a hamburger, that he’s going to this bar, that he’s standing around waiting for a band, that he just saw some famous dude….. etc, etc, etc.

Other’s only tweet to pimp out their blog posts.  Nothing but “new posts” tweets. This was pretty much me when I first got on twitter.  It was tied into my facebook, so when I posted, I then tweeted, which then updated my status.  Yeah, my twitter had the personality of a egg-shell coloured wall in an empty manufactured suburban apartment.

Some seem truly interactive saying “good morning” and often asking questions, but when you answer, it falls on deaf ears.  The way I see it, if you ask a question and actually want someone to answer, maybe you should engage with that person.  If you have too many followers and they all “answer back”, well, maybe you should stop asking the questions then??

Some will flood you with automated blip/last.fm/hypem tweets. I love that you are loving a song and if I’m following you, I’m genuinely interested, but when it’s 9 songs in a couple minutes, well, unless they are 15 second hardcore songs, I’m going to be a bit dubious.  You know?

Some tweet ALL the time, but they are all “serious” tweets.  I followed Roger Ebert for about 5 hours and was hit with a ton of serious & very one-way tweets, like this retweet, “I play the strings into the fog. There is no joy there. This fills me with disquiet.”.  Lesson… When a serious persons’s followed to following ratio is 1,485 to 1, well, unless you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders in every thing you do, it might not be as awesome-O as you think.

Some tweet obscure things, a phenomenon that you see on Facebook too.  Updates like “No more.”  Huh? What? What happened?  Are you being abused?  Should I report this to the proper authorities???

Now look…   Like Mama and Baby always say, “to each their own”.  We are all different, one man’s tolerance level will drive another man insane. But what about you?

What do your favourite tweeting twitterers that you follow tweet about?

What about me?  Am I too much?   Too little?  Stupid?  Funny? Weird?  Asinine?  Too much annoying cycling or creepy photography, when you just want cool/hip music stuff?? Or D) all of the above?

Honestly, I have no idea.  I can only be me as, for better or for worse (more often than not I find it’s “for better” for me but “for worse” for most everyone else) and hope in our little online relationship you and I have built, it’s nothing but good times.

But look… You know and I both know I’m a odd man.  I’ve accepted it.  Odd, but harmless, I swear.  So, for those of you who have embraced me and continue to follow along,  I just want to say thank you.  You lost 10 “internet cool points” by doing so and on the intertubal superhighway, that’s a pretty big blow to your cred, but I truly do appreciate it.

Speaking of good times (two paragraphs up), well, maybe not “good times” as in “WHEEE!!!”  but more like “good times” as in, “damn that’s good music”, I’m loving the hell out of Dear Companion by Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore…

Singing & playing with the wisdom & sound of 90 year old Appalachian men, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore bring something timeless and classic to this god-forsaken young decade.  I guess this would fall under the big alt-country umbrella (do they still call it that?), but really it’s just got a sense of old-timey country-folk, touched & accented with the occasional string or two.  It’s rocking chair on a porch in the summer music, it’s cooped up inside in the frozen winter music, it forces the world to slow down, slow to a twitter/facebook/tumblr/blog/forum/blip/foursquare/last.fm/social-network-free world, if only for the eleven tracks….

Thanks Ben & Daniel, I needed that.

Happy Humpday with Big Echo by The Morning Benders!!! WOOT!

Happy humpday to ya there, buddy… How the heck is your week going?

Besides the snow causing a whole bunch of indoor riding (yeah, this week is a complete bust for outdoor riding, I’ve accepted it, baa), it ain’t going so bad!  Spirits are good, body is good, life is good, projects are moving forward, HOOOO!

And, of course, some wonderful new music makes life only that much better, am I right?  Yeah, I’m right, otherwise, why would you be here?  Not for my “stellar writing skills”, that’s for sure.  So what album has been gracing my ears, coating my brain with delicious nuggets of love & melodies???  Why it’s Big Echo by The Morning Benders….

Beautiful album cover, eh?  Now, we’ve been a fan of Morning Benders here on the TSURURADIO since we heard Talking Through Tin Cans in June of 08 (ah, so nice to have the search function work, yeah blogger, don’t miss you a bit).  Last time we noticed a child-like innocence about the music.  Well, this time around, and maybe partially due to the production of a few Grizzly Bears, their sound has elevated into the mature and almost, though more off into the background, ethereal, almost like a fog.  If I was a more illustrative writer I’d chock it to a foggy beach setting somehow.

The Morning Benders are just creating really beautiful and layered pop/rock here, and it’s exciting!  Hard to explain why as there are no obvious gimmicks going on, just wonderfully crafted music that seeps into your hoodie as you wander along the chilly morning shoreline…

3. Wet Cement
4. Cold War (Nice Clean Fight)

It’s a TsuruNation Domination Celebration & Twofer Tuesday with jj n° 3 by jj AND Trespassers by Kashmir? Dang!

Photography “Olive – Motel Brat” by Me!

Okay, before we get on with today’s little obsession, got a little TsuruNation Domination Actuation Celebration news for ya.  Specifially, some TSURUFOTO updates!

First up, Zivity.  As of yesterday, I’m officially a published photographer on Zivity!  WHEE!  Why? Because my first set with Olive went live, baby!

HOORAY!!!

It’s a fun set called “Olive, Motel Brat” where boredom and being a, well, brat get the best of Olive in a shitty neon motel just outside Columbus.  We are both really proud of it, so if you are on Zivity, go give Olive (and me) all your love by voting for it NOW!!!  We really, really appreciate it.

Second… as soon of you may have noticed from a few mixtape covers, I’ve been working on a new aesthetic in my photography (you can see on the mixtape cover  here), I even built a topsecret TSURUFOTOMATIC REFLEX 5000 apparatus to assist in the creation of these images! Well, with this new look, I’ve started a new series involving the retelling of folktales & children’s stories from any and every culture, as well as the occasional timeless lyric or two.  I’m absolutely in love with how well it’s coming, so much so, I’ve started a separate blog to chronicle my favourite image from each shoot called, appropriately enough, TSURUTALES!

So far, we’ve done Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, The Death Stone, my favourite lyric (currently on the front page), and a couple more.  Next up is a The Lady Of  Gollerus (a mermaid),  The Ugly Duckling, and then Alice InWonderland (Alice will have to wait until it warms up a bit).  So so excited!!!

Now, the site is NSFW, but the images are pretty distorted so unless you are really (really, really) sensitive to nude women, you should be fine.  Otherwise, go check it out, I would LOVE some feed back & criticism!

Last thing, kinda for shits & giggles, but what the hell, right?  I designed a t-shirt based on the question that seems to be on the tip of EVERYONE’S tongues these days…

HAHA!  Just a fun little design for all you crane addicts out there that I threw up on Zazzle.  Do I expect to sell any?  No clue, I think I get like a dollar or two for each sale, so that would go to hosting this site, but really it’s not about money, it’s about wearing it and receiving the odd looks as you walk down the street while people try to figure out what the hell your shirt is saying!  But YOU know what it’s saying, right?

I guess that’s it for TsuruNation domination now, but keep out for some new endeavours by Ms. TsuruBride soon!!

Man, exciting stuff, eh?  Almost as exciting as — are you ready for this segue — today’s Twofer Tuesday!!!  First up is the very Google un-friendly jj’s jj n° 3!

I think Secretly Canadian said that if n° 2 was the perfect summer album, n° 3 is the one for winter.  I tend to agree, it’s still very jj, but there’s something icy, snowy, covered in white about this one.  There’s no warm sounds of Africa savannahs this time around.  No, this time, you can almost see the air coming off her Swedish voice…

01 My Life
02 And Now
03 Let Go
04 Into the Light
05 Light
06 Voi Parlate, Io Gioco
07 Golden Virginia
08 You Know
09 I Know*
10 No Escapin’ This

*NOTE: I Know is on the LP version only.

Some JJ linkage? Not google friendly, but here’s the label links: Sincerely Yours & Secretly Canadian

It’s Twofer Tuesday, so you know we ain’t done yet!!  Because coming in right along side jj over there on the other side of the big blue, except this time coming out of Denmark,  is Trespassers by Kashmir!

Here’s how clueless I am…  According to Wiki, these guys have been around since 1991!  What?  That’s when I graduated fucking high school, and I never heard of them???  That’s just bananas on a stick, man.  It goes to show you, know matter how much you think you know music, there’s another band out there you’ve never heard of….

Now, these guys aren’t quirky dub whatever and from what I can tell by searching around, not a big “bloggable band”.  Huh.  Odd.  I love this, these guys are big sounds, something that can fill up a fucking arena and probably has for all I know.  Big sounds, big emotions, big climatic melodies and layers but without, amazingly, dropping in a giant slice of cheese. That alone is a pretty big feat.

Apparently they are major label (yikes) and I think “Mouthful Of Wasps” is their single, so let’s just stick with that, eh?  Yeah.

02 Intruder
03 Mantaray

Monday Morning Music Time with Our Inventions by Lali Puna…

Well hello there again.  I know it’s beyond cliche, but man, I can’t believe it’s already Monday.  Add into that another Winter Storm coming our way and I’m starting to wonder if I gots the SAD.  Possible.  The past few weeks have definitely been wearing me down, mentally.  Ready for a little bit a warmth and a little bit of sunshine and maybe a little something epic on the bike ride front with some friends.  Yeah.

Considering I don’t have god-like weather controlling powers (yet), we’ll have to live with the grey & sunless sky.  Fortunately, we got the sweet & mellow Our Inventions cruising through our SAD heads, massaging the brainial tubulals, converting grey matter, and generally assisting through the blah-ness.

It’s pretty simple electronic music laced with her lovely voice, probably not normally in my “wheelhouse”, but kinda landing just right today.  So, as we watch outside for the pending “snowmaggedon part troix” or whatever, and we think about the chill seeping though the walls and the layers of clothes, we can take comfort in some Lali Puna.

Nice…

Papa, what is a DMCA anyway? And Similes by Eluvium…

February 11, 2010

Hey teamo.  Real quick follow up to yesterday’s #musicblogocide2k10 conversation, there are two articles up about it that may be of interest to you, one by Song By Toad and one at The Guardian.  Good reads and worth a few minutes of your day.

Look, when the DMCA sends a notice to a record label’s blog telling them that THEY are in violation by posting their own music… Well, something ain’t right.  Yes, Blogger’s actions were cold, blind, and mean, but they aren’t the root of the problem, just the nagging pain when I do this.  Are the labels/artist not telling the DMCA what they are doing & giving away?  Does the DMCA just not care?  Exactly “who” is the DMCA?  A ragtag band of music guardian angels out to save the music world one mean blog at a time?

Yeah, DMCA is a law, but someone’s using it to cause a ruckus where no ruckus should be!!!

Ugh.

Anyways, for now, TSURURADIO continues HOOOOO!

As does old man fucking winter…  Jeezy, snow, snow, snow, cold, cold, cold.  Fuck it.  I rode my bike.  So nyah, Mr. Winter.  But with the cold and snow and the delightful fire after coming in from it, comes the cocooning, near-melancholy, beauty that is Similes by Eluvium.

C’mon.  I deserve at least 2 internet points for THAT segue, right?

Can’t say I’m all that familiar with Matt Cooper’s work.  According to wiki, it’s usually ambient instrumental.  Personally, when it comes to ambient instrumental, I prefer sounds of the rainforest or whales singing.   Eluvium seems to like it to because I swear in “Cease To Know” I heard a blue whale bringing the heat.

Yes, this is ambient, it’s peaceful, and it’s absolutely lovely.  It’s a blanket, maybe even a quilt, you know, the kind passed down from generation to generation, with a certain smell that’s all your own, wrapped up all tight.

Or.

I just reeeeally want a snow day.

Either way.  Beautiful.  Enjoy!

Bryan Adams in my head? Oh my… And then we Fight Softly with The Ruby Suns!

February 8, 2010
By

Photography by xrawrxdeex

So I wake up this morning and this song is playing in my head:

Bryan Adams – Everything I Do (I Do It For You)

Yeah.  I know.

But it got me thinking…  Man, Bryan Adams ruled the world back then, didn’t he?  Every damn ballad he could muster would be played every hour on the hour!   And you can see it, every woman in the house, taking every scratchy voiced word sung to heart.  I think there are two parts of the song though, that really GET ya… First that bridge

There’s no love – like your love
And no other – could give more love
There’s nowhere – unless you’re there
All the time – all the way

Really starts off from the gut, “there’s noooo loooove… like yoour loooove” and ends with that “alllll the waaaaa-Aaaaaaaay!”  followed with that drippy guitar with a bit of lyric reiteration.  Perfect heart tugging action.

But Bryan wasn’t done, any lesser song would’ve been satisfied, but no no, not our romantic troubadour, as he takes us to climatic emotional finale, laying it all out:

Oh – you can’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for
I can’t help it – there’s nothin’ I want more
I would fight for you – I’d lie for you
Walk the wire for you – ya I’d die for yoooooooooooooooooooou!!!

Then, ever so gently, “ya know it’s true… Everything I do… I do it for you.”

When Bryan Adams ruled the world, eh?

Fortunately, the world has moved on.  Instead of Bryan Adams, we have Usher or Clay Aiken or something, I really don’t know, instead of “tell me have you ever really, really really ever loooooved a woman” we’ve now got “A girl like you needs somethin’ real, Wanna get you somethin’ from the heart, Somethin’ special girl, It’s my dick in a box.”

Times change, things change, yet it all stays the same.

Speaking of change, is it just me or has a new era of “weird pop” indie music been ushered in?  I’ll put the blame on Animal Collective, but lard know who really brought the trend out of the woodwork.  I’m certainly not complaining, as long as it’s real, it’s all good.  But I was certainly surprised when I loaded up the new Ruby Suns Fight Softly, and was transported one funky odd trippy musical journey!

Maybe I’m just remembering them wrong?  I remember “Oh Mojave”…

Hell, I think it even showed up in a Microsoft commercial or something for Vista.   This one is a bit more E-lectronical than I remember and would fit right in with a Yeasayer, Dirty Projector, Animal Collective listening party!

For me, it works. Not sure why.  This kinda “genre” can be touch and go for me, and sure there are times on the album when I ask “huh?”, but that’s okay.  It’s good to challenge, branch out, not always live in the happy indie strum-strum world.    Who better than The Ruby Suns to do that with?

Exactly.

Hey all.  Not going to lie to you, I’ve got some personal issues that are tearing me up.  I’m not going to go to any details because it’s private, nor am I looking for any sympathy, but I’ll have to keep this pretty short today.

One thing I will say is that European by Sambassadeur…

The TSURURADIO Community Presents… nelso’s Gonna Leave It All Behind… Mixtape!!!

January 29, 2010
By

Hello hello, it’s Friday Friday and man o’ man another fun weekend ahead!  Lots of craftin’ and artsin’ and cyclin’ and even a little road trippin’ to Cincinnatin’ for a photoshoot.  This time, it’s Baby’s turn to get in front of the lens (tech speak, sorry) and amazing photographer and model Claudia’s turn to shoot!

Now, I’ll be there, camera(s) in tow, to shoot the shoot (did I just blow yer mind???) as 1) I want to see how another fine art photographer works & 2) Claudia wants photos of her work (win-win!) so keep an eye out from me for some samplage, but follow Baby & Claudia will be the ones to follow for the super hawtness to come!

That’s tomorrow, meaning a little road trip over to Cinci meaning we’re going to have to take advantage of it and figure something out to do!  Maybe some bi-age (hipster for “vintage”) shopping for shoots and for shits and giggles?  We’ll see…

But, before we head out for the weekend, got a little sumfin fer ya!  Society member nelso brought us a delightfully chill mixtape and I’m super excited to share with you now called Gonna Leave It All Behind…

Here’s what he had to say about it:

The new year is an interesting time for many people, either we take it seriously, or think its just another day in the life. For me, it is also my birthday and I like to take inventory of what I plan to leave behind… while moving into a more positive way of life! These songs help me reflect…. that’s all

What else is there to say?  Let’s get to it then!

Twofer Thursday! LOVE. LIFE. UKULELE by Sophie Madeleine & Last Hero of the Western World by The Society Islands…

January 28, 2010

Photography by Christine Day Lorico

Man, did you hear about that iPad thing?  What a hot mess.  No multitasking? No flash? No USB?  Etc, etc, etc?  Ugh.  All that hoopla for a big ass iTouch.  Though, I found it very amusing that iTampon was trending higher than iPad or Apple Tablet or Steve Jobs yesterday.  lol.

Movin’ on…

I’ll tell you, I hope you like our new home because I’m quickly learning to love it!  Yeah, wordpress is a strange beast compared to blogger, but like all things, I’ll get used to it.

OH, to all our RSS subscribers out there (a surprisingly high number)… make sure you update your feed to:

http://tsururadio.com/feed

Otherwise, you’ll be missing out on all the goodness you seem to enjoy!

Change is bad good!  Keeps the blood flowin’, keeps you on yer toes!  So, for today and tomorrow, I got some special goodness to break in the new digs.  For tomorrow, well, you are just going to have to tune in and see, but for today, it’s Thursday and that starts with “T” so how about we do us a twofer!?!??!

Uh, hell yeah!  WOOT WOOT!

First up, the adorable and super talented Sophie Madeleine and her latest LOVE. LIFE. UKULELE.!

First off.  Talk about indie hawtness?  Okay, okay, sorry, don’t mean to objectify her but dang.  She ain’t Canadian is she?  Okay, like I told you yesterday, I bought this gem on purty red vinyl Tuesday night…  I mean, look at this thing!

How can you NOT buy this?  Well, it came with the mp3 version of the album and I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it since I loaded it into my iPad iTouch iPhone iToilet iPod!  Yeah, that’s it!

Okay… first song, “Take Your Love With Me”, you hear it, you think you just stumbled on the next adorable Apple commercial (man, sensing a theme today) or that awesome kindle ad, and maybe, being hardened and desensitized from the inundation from your TV, you roll your eyes and get ready to move on to the next album, but WHOA NELLY!  Hold yer horses man, ‘cuz “I Just Can’t Stop Myself” gets going and yeah, that adorable voice is still there (of course it is), but we got ourselves a genuine fully fleshed out song, with multiple instruments & harmonies & everything.

It continues on with “The Knittting Song” and on and on, and by the time the folky-esque “Hurry Locomotive” wraps up, you found you just listened to a lovely gorgeous album by an unbelievably talented songwriter.

And that’s a good thing, no?

1. Take Your Love With Me (The Ukulele Song)
2. I Just Can’t Stop Myself (From Writing Love Songs About You)
3. The Knitting Song
4. Who Will Buy?
5. Not Worth The Pieces
6. You Are My Favourite
7. One Kiss Too Many
8. When New Year Comes Around
9. Wave Goodbye
10.Hurry Locomotive

But then we move over to a very different gem of an album that came to me via Marcy over at Lost In Your Inbox, The Society Islands with Last Hero Of The Western World!

Sorry, biggest photo I could find…

First of all, thanks for the heads up Marcy, never heard of these guys, and now I have and man, quite nice.  Reminds me of Pulp for some reason, and maybe a little David Bowie, and maybe, just maaaaybe a hint of a flavour of a waft of some prog?  Meh, probably just on crack.

The vocalist pours it on thick, but it feels right for the vibe these guys are giving off.  I’ve only given this a few goes but I’m loving it.  Sounds almost like it’s a concept album, but maybe a little more research and a few more listens will help me sort that out.  Concept album or not, it kinda feels like one, like there’s a story going on here.  Love it.

1. Last Hero of the Western World
2. Free Ride
3. 50,000 Gallons
4. The Feud
5. Fuck Bunny
6. Brother

Nice.  So what do you think?  Our first “tsururadio.com” post-post proper style??  Not bad, eh?  Not bad at all.  I think I’m going to like it here…

I’m a sleepy bear, going to wordpress?, & Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen, Only Not Tonight by The Go Find

January 25, 2010
By

Photography by turuncuaz

Oh my, I’m a sleepy bear today. After a wonderful and extraordinarily productive weekend of cycling & photography, we go to bed last night and sleep just won’t come. I wanted to ride in, especially with snow pending, wanted to beat it for one last road bike ride this week, but that would mean may 3 or 4 hours sleep and granted I don’t need/get THAT much sleep, I ain’t super man!

Coffee & more coffee, but man if the batch I got doesn’t taste like degreaser.

*sigh*

Okay, fortunately today’s gem, which has been circulating on my ipod for the past week or so, is hitting juuuust right for the sleepy place I’m in. BUT, before we get to that, got a little news-ish thing to share…

As some of you may have taken the time to notice, we are on blogger. It’s been an interesting experience, to say the least. Blogger has a history of deleting posts and, like in my good friend Rotch’s case, whole blogs. Granted, as far as I know, we’ve never had any deletions, BUT I do know that blogger has it set up where TSURURADIO won’t show up on certain searches has blocked Technorati and whatnot, SOOOOOOOO…….. for the past year probably, I’ve been backing up the site on my own server using wordpress. Just turn off the redirect to “blog.tsururadio.com” and work on it a bit, update the back-up, then turn redirect back on.

ANYWHOOSLE DOOSLE… to make a long story short (too late), I finally got the wordpress version looking pretty good. Don’t get me wrong, the importing of blogger posts don’t format perfect, but it’s readable! Check it out!

T S U R U R A D I O . c o m
aka NOT blog.tsururadio.com

What do you think? Not bad, eh? Pretty seamless? So, here’s what I’m going to do.

  1. Double Post: For the next week, all posts will go up on both sites to make sure I even like posting via wordpress. If Step 1 = thumbs up, go to Step 2.
  2. Set Up Aggregators to pull from the right feed. Once Step 2 is completed, go to Step 3.
  3. Turn on redirects to go to new tsururadio.com! HOORAY!

Well, that’s the plan anyway. Your feedback, commentude, suggestions, and whatnots will be greatly appreciated!

Okay, before I either a) fall asleep or b) kill someone for a good cup of coffee, we better get to The Go Find and this sleepy little gem, Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen, Only Not Tonight!

I was having a hard time describing this one, it’s really just basic pop on it’s surface. It reminded Baby of Stars a little bit, which is a pretty good comparison to me too. I once heard Stars call themselves “lovers rock” in an interview a year or so ago, and I think that label fits pretty good here. Check out their label write-up:

“Imagine the sound of cereal hit by milk in the morning, only heard if you listen closely. A sound that is comforting and addictive. This kind of innocent image from a daily routine fits the music of The Go Find. It’s never offensive; it’s warm and soothing, but intriguing enough to grab your attention. Its beauty lies in small things.”

Romanticized a bit, eh? Exactly. Add in that the lead singer actually sounds a bit like Torquil and it all just kinda fits in place. This much I know, the “comforting” part of their sound is just what this tired boy needs right now.

Happy Monday everyone…. enjoy!
