TSURURADIO Presents… Just A Few Old School Kicks Mixtape!!!

June 4, 2010

Photography by my grandma…

We had a lot of fun this week, don’t you think?  We shared, we laughed, we cried, we poked fun (at me), but in the end, we found that we are what we are.  We are only a culmination of our genetics & our environment, and the way our genetics interprets what’s happening in that environment.  That’s it.  There are no right or wrong answers, no wrong things to like, and certainly nothing to be embarrassed over.  We all go through our phases, love them or hate them we all did the things we did, and because of all that, we are who we are right now.  You know what?  I like who I am.

So… to cap off my week of recollecting, I offer up this, albeit quickly put together, fun little mixtape of various strolls down various lanes.  Some short, some long, some good, some…. eh, maybe not so much, but here we are and here it is as…

TSURURADIO Presents… Prog The Needle?!?! A mixtape of outtakes from the epic vinyl mixtape battle royale!

May 31, 2010

Photo & subsequent “hipsterization” by me!!!

Well…. I was looking forward to a long, hard bike ride today, but apparently Accuweather wasn’t so “accu” after all as the afternoon thunderstorms hit at 8am, just as I arrived on my bike at Tuck’s to ride.  Nice.  It’s not the rain that bothers me, I love riding in the rain, but heavy wind with thunder & lightning, well, even I know when to say, “hmmm……. maybe we should wait a bit, eh?”

One man’s lost is another man’s gain, right?  So instead of waiting until this afternoon for today’s special post, here we are!

What can I say?  Friday…  Man, we, well, destroyed The Needle Drop.  I mean literally!  His server has been down since Friday afternoon!  I think we literally actually destroyed them!  I…. I didn’t mean too! I guess I don’t know my own mixtape strength??  Hot damn.

In celebration, Baby & I went up to the park for a picnic on Friday with champagne & goat cheese & meat & crackers (photo up above), and it was quite nice.  In fact, the whole weekend has been nothing but nice.  Riding & relaxing, what else does one need??

Speaking of riding…. On Saturday, this Saturday, the 5th, I’m once again riding in the ADA’s Tour de Cure!

Yep, just like last year, I’m putting my legs to good use, riding 100 miles throughout the northeast side of Columbus to raise money to help fight diabetes!!! Can I get a WOOT!

Niiiiice….  And just like last year, I’m asking for your help!  If you have a few bucks and want to sponsor my ass, I would be so grateful & appreciative!  Just click my picture of me rocking my Tour de Cure jersey.  Every dollar helps and I promise to do you proud and give you a fun-filled ride report when it’s all said and done!

Okay!  Now the music!  In appreciation & celebration of our victory in our Vinyl Mixtape Battle Royale, I’ve created another vinyl mixtape for you!  WHEEE!!!  I call this one “Prog The Needle”, as it’s mostly prog or proggish vinyl cuts that didn’t quite make our mixtape on Friday, put in order, cleaned and tagged up, just for you!  Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s not ALL prog, but tell me, after listening 1 to 5 that “Never Tell” doesn’t have elements of prog in it!  And NMH has some psych in it, which is where much prog came from and the Femmes were completely inspired by Velvet Underground and Peter Gabriel, though “Biko” isn’t prog, WAS uber-prog with Genesis and stuff and stuff and so on and so on.

Why not?

Exactly.  So, tell you what… Don’t worry about labels, if you aren’t familiar with some of this, give it a go (especially “Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes, a rather under-appreciated Yes song from Fragile), open yer ears, open yer mind, and get yer prog on as….

Prog The Needle?!?!

(full zip)

01 Islands – Arm’s Way
02 Frog Eyes – Styled By Dr. Roberts
03 Sunset Rubdown – Up On Your Leopard, Upon The End Of Your Feral Days
04 Yes – Heart Of The Sunrise
05 The Decemberists – The Tain
06 Violent Femmes – Never Tell
07 Neutral Milk Hotel – Where You’ll Find Me Now
08 Velvet Underground – What Goes On
09 Peter Gabriel – Biko

Cheers & thank you again everyone!!!

2 Days To Go Until We Ride For Boobies!!!! And If I Had A Hi-Fi by Nada Surf!!!

April 1, 2010

Maps are printed, signs are made, Clem’s in good shape, the weather is looking to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!

Let’s help save some boobies???? WHEEEEEEEE!!!!

And perfect with the Spring-like weather?  Why it’s new Nada Surf!  How perfect!  Well, not “new” new… It’s actually a covers album called If I Had A Hi-Fi, but Nada Surf is Nada Surf and their fuzzy power chord pop is Spring!

Cover albums are tricky.  In one sense, they are probably the laziest form of album creation.  I mean, the song, the arrangements are already written!  Technically, all you have to do is get permission from the owner of the rights to the song and then play them in a mic.  Technically.

In another sense though, cover albums are ridiculously difficult.  First the selection process… Of the infinite available songs or maybe of just the couple hundred you love, how do you pick which ones to cover?  Then comes the really hard part, making the song “your own” but at the same time, not losing what made the song so great or fun or whatever to  begin with!  You are Nada Surf and you want to cover “Enjoy The Silence” by Depeche Mode?  If you make it too Depeche Mode, then what was the point?  If you make it too Nada Surf, then “wtf did you do to my beloved ‘Enjoy The Silence’ you asshole?”.  If you do something generic and watered down, well, now you are just pissing us off.

Take a look at Peter Gabriel’s “Scratch Your Back” thing out.  Basically him, I think drunk after a White Castle binge, tinkering slowly, so so slowly, on the piano while croaking out “indie” songs.  Oh my.  Something along the lines of this, but with a piano (and hopefully a shirt).

But in the end, no matter the deemed “success” of the covering on the album, they are still fun.  Even the worse ones are fun.  Even the Peter Gabriel one, no matter how serious he’s going at it, is still kinda fun.

And that’s exactly what we got here!  A whole bunch of the Nada Surf you know and love covering some known & lesser known songs!  From Spoon to Kate Bush (love that one) to Depeche Mode to French stuff!  So just turn on your favourite songs, and sing along because you know the damn words (another benefit to a covers album) and have fun!!!

Nuffin’ but good times….

01 Electrocution (Bill Fox)
02 Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode)
03 Love Goes On (The Go Betweens)
04 Janine (Arthur Russell)
05 You Were So Warm (Dwight Twilley)
06 Love And Anger (Kate Bush)
07 Agony Of Lafitte (Spoon)
08 Bye Bye Beaute (Coralie Clement)
09 Question (Moody Blues)
10 Bright Side (Soft Pack)
11 Evolucion (Mecromina)
12 I Remembered What I Was Going To
