Some Times: things are just black and white

Cha..cha..chaaanges. Decided to change the name of my blog posts. This is a big deal y’all. No longer will arimyg be writing her tidbits under itty interwebs. Instead, she’s changing it up! It’s now Some Times with arimyg! yay!

Last Friday I had my first radio show on KSPC! It was super exciting! and also mostly terrifying! Some of you tuned in and kept up with me a little on twitter, and that was really nice. I’ll be on every Friday, 4-6PM PST. You can stream online at the link above, or if you’re in the LA/Pasadena/San Bernadino area, we’re 88.7 FM! Hiiyyah! (karate noise.) Anyway, the name of my show is Some Times, so I decided I should make my existence a little more cohesive and name this that too! It’s supposed to be two separate words, so don’t go critiquin’ ok? I figure it applied to these posts also cause like, i’m just posting a couple of times here and there for you. Kay? I hope that’s kay.

So I woke up this morning and was flooded by interesting internet bullshit. I had about 20 tabs open after going through my twitter. 3 of which were these super cool videos, all in black and white. Sort of a coincidence, no? Or maybe a message from the internet god? I’ve been getting into visuals (photog, video, editing, cinematog, etc) lately, and these were all pretty stunning!

So first, a video from Florence and the Machine! Sadly, Flo didn’t get to take home any VMAs last night. I sort of considered her to be the indie/underground music scene’s VMA representative. Her performance at the show last night was awesome, but it wasnt enough. She went down to 30 Seconds to Mars (really?) and Lady Gaga. Sad stuff. Anyway, I just came across this video from the summer for “Heavy In Your Arms” and it’s totally beautiful, as expected I guess. It’s gritty, it’s simple, it’s avant garde, it’s edgy as fuck, etc!

On that note, there is also this super random short film featuring Lykke Li floating around the interwebs. It’s really rather awesome. I think a lot of my appreciation for this had to do with the video production class I’m taking this semester, which has got me all crazy for badass filmmaking. It’s called Solarium by Moses Berkson and it’s rather… out there… But it’s got mirrors and dark eye makeup and sand! All in black and white! What’s not to love?!

AND NOW FOR MY FAVORITE FAVORITE FAVORITE BLACK AND WHITE TIME?! Pitchfork TV just did a Cemetery Gates session with Of Montreal featuring 2 song off their new album False Priest and the Hissing Fauna classic “Heimdalsgate like a Promethean Curse.” Now, you may or may not know that Of Montreal is probably my all time favorite band. Sometimes I stray, for example after a year or two without a new album. But I always come crawling back to them, to him, my God, Kevin Barnes. Also, may I add, I fucking love Solange Knowles and she’s straight badass in every video I’ve seen for “Sex Karma.” You should really watch this series. IT’S THE BEST.

Now for a few irrelevent bits and pieces to close off this nonchromatic post?

If you ever liked Pokemon, this is funny. If you didn’t, it will probably mean nothing.

I hate to reference Pitchfork for their excellence twice in one post, but this article on the prevalence of “found-art” style album covers and photographs is pretty interesting and relevant.

The Flaming Lips do a relatively hilarious rendition of I Can Be A Frog in the most recent Black Cab Session.

And how about an nice & tidy little MP3 for the road?

Gonna go take a nap now before Visual Anthropology cause let’s be real, I deserve it.

Talk about your hump day groove? False Priest by Of Montreal!!!

Oh man, this album couldn’t be anymore perfect for “hump day”, even if it tried. I wouldn’t call myself an of Montreal fan and yeah, I still think of Outback Steakhouse every time I hear that one song, but man oh man oh man, False Priest is booty shakin’ fun!

Okay, I know you “oM” fans are hardcore and shit, I’ll keep this short and please be gentle on me. I’m not going to break this album down and compare it to anything else they have done because I’ve never really got into anything from them for more than a few seconds!

With that in mind, let me say, this album is fun, my booty can’t help but shake a little to the left and then a bit to the right, while my eyes remain a bit closed and my mutter “yeah, yeah” aloud while the poor shmoes around me wonder what I’m on.

It feels “cohesive” & very easy to bob your head like an idiot to, yet quirky enough and, with the wordiness of it, carrying a feeling of something “deeper” than the funky grooves might otherwise imply. Meaning, much like the lead guy, I think his name is Kevin, the album goes both ways! HA! It’s as deep or as vapid as you are feeling at the moment, which is fantastic because even though I love a little meat & potatoes, sometimes I just want to suck down some pixie sticks and bounce off the walls for a while!

Is it the end of music blogging as we know it? And TsuruBride Presents… Bibliomania!!!

May 4, 2010

Well, my friends… The end of music bloggerin’ as you & I know it may be ending soon.

It’s true.

You see, over in Ireland, there’s a group called IMRO that is basically a union for music artists that have decided it would be a good thing to force music bloggers who host music on their site to pay licensing fees to “play” the music on the site if it’s available in Ireland (of course it’s available in Ireland, as far as I know, none of block any countries).

Though initially they are targeting Irish bloggers, like Nialler9, The Torture Garden, and Asleep On A Compost Heap, they’ve made it clear, they will require every blog that is accessible to Ireland to pay up, even if they don’t “play” Irish bands.  It’s a very strange thing and, if they succeed, opens up a terrible precedent.  If bloggers pay up to Ireland, what’s to stop the ASCAP, SOCAN or PRS from doing the same thing?

I make 0, that’s a big fat Z-E-R-O, dollars on this site (it’s actually a money-losing endeavour with server fees and what not).  If suddenly I’m forced to pay licensing in Ireland and then the States and whatever other country decides they want in, well, yeah, no…. Ain’t happening.  Me & probably every other blogger you know will do one of 3 things.

1.  Stop the music.  Maybe embed some licensed stream or maybe a legal 30 second clip (Mmm…. 12 minute prog songs summed up in 30 secs?  Awesome-o) but that’d be it.  Sounds exciting, eh? In this world of portability, where you listen to the music pretty much everywhere BUT attached to your computer, embed onlys are pretty limp.

2. Go rogue & underground, ala PirateBay or whatever.  Host the site through some secret country, anonymously, etc, and hope they never find you.  Exciting. Personally though, bloggerin’ ain’t worth going to the pokey for…

3.  Quit. It’s already a scary place with Blogger shutting people down, DMCA notices to twitter, and crazy shit.  Now paying up? Nope!

I’m too old to “go rogue”, so I’d probably go to 30 sec embeds or, if it’s allowed, Soundcloud or something…. OR just say “fuck this”.

Nialler9 wrote a wonderful article with tons of details here. For more info, The Guardian also has an article & Shane at The Torture Garden has now written on it a couple times.  Basically it all comes down to the same thing.  Blogs, love them or hate them, are a part of the music industry now, we are part of “getting the word out” and getting bands the press they may or may not get other wise.

What’s funny, sad, etc, is that alot of these blogs, me included, are inundated with emails from labels, bands, PR people, etc asking us to listen & share their music, for FREE!  Listen to this, post this, please!  This includes bands covered by the IMRO.  Talk about a mixed message, eh?

So… what if this passes through and the bloggers that keep on bloggerin’ pay up, then the next one wants money, then the next. At some point, you won’t be left with much except the rich “opinion makers” which is why so many people turned to blogs in the first place!  Because the opinion of the few is too often, well, crap.

Go to Nialler’s write up, follow up, learn what you can do, write the IMRO, make yourself heard. Basically, give this proposal a BIG. FAT.

Okay, before we call this a day, let’s get some music going, eh?  And man I’ve got a GEM & special treat for you!!!  The unimitatable TsuruBride has made a rare and elusive mixtape!!!  This one was made for Crane’s Day down in the Society for her Crane Buddy and now that everyone’s got their Crane’s Day gifts, I can finally share this with you!!!  It’s called Bibliomania and given Baby’s penchant for readin’, I’ll give you oooone liiiittle gueeeess on the theme.

It’s books.

Man… really? I had to tell you that?  Oh my.  20 gems blatantly and not-so-blatantly about books, reading, and/or adorable librarians!  HOT!  So let’s do this, okay?  Let’s keep the music going, let’s keep the “blogosphere” going, let’s keep, not just my voice, but really everyone’s voices heard, and let’s get our mixtape on as……
