TSURURADIO Re-Presents… Leaving New York, Never Easy Mixtape!!!

July 13, 2010

Photography by Me!

Well friends, gotta head up to good ol’ New York today, pop in, hit a trade show all day, get to the hotel, work on work emails, if there’s anything left in me, go to a Wolf Parade show, get up the next morning, hit the trade show again, then fly back home tomorrow night!  OOF!  Busy two days!!!

So, not sure of the posting situation here over that time, BUT wanted to leave you with a little something that was inspired by the last time I did this exact same trip!  A little podcast that became a sweet little mixtape of the flight there, some sounds of NY, some REALLY REALLY bad poetry, and, of course, the flight back home!  I still listen to this one periodically and outside the REALLY REALLY bad poetry, I gotta say, I still love it!  For all you who missed it as a podcast (TSURUCAST No. 9 to be specific, that’s why it has a “theme song”) & the first time we re-presented it as a mixtape, here it is again!

HOORAY!

Now, I’ve got me a new little phone (Sprint dropped me a Samsung Moment, but more on that later this week), so if you want to stay all connected and shit, don’t be shy, don’t be a cute little wallflower, this is the internetaltubular sensations, you either speak up or it’s like you don’t even exist!  I got 3 locales where we can “hook up” non-sexually:

Our Society

See ya in one or more of ‘em!  Okay, it’s about time to go wake up Baby to drive my gnarly butt to the aero-port, so without further adieu, have a great day everyone, & a great tomorrow!  We’ll be talking to you soon as…

TSURURADIO Presents… Prog The Needle?!?! A mixtape of outtakes from the epic vinyl mixtape battle royale!

May 31, 2010

Photo & subsequent “hipsterization” by me!!!

Well…. I was looking forward to a long, hard bike ride today, but apparently Accuweather wasn’t so “accu” after all as the afternoon thunderstorms hit at 8am, just as I arrived on my bike at Tuck’s to ride.  Nice.  It’s not the rain that bothers me, I love riding in the rain, but heavy wind with thunder & lightning, well, even I know when to say, “hmmm……. maybe we should wait a bit, eh?”

One man’s lost is another man’s gain, right?  So instead of waiting until this afternoon for today’s special post, here we are!

What can I say?  Friday…  Man, we, well, destroyed The Needle Drop.  I mean literally!  His server has been down since Friday afternoon!  I think we literally actually destroyed them!  I…. I didn’t mean too! I guess I don’t know my own mixtape strength??  Hot damn.

In celebration, Baby & I went up to the park for a picnic on Friday with champagne & goat cheese & meat & crackers (photo up above), and it was quite nice.  In fact, the whole weekend has been nothing but nice.  Riding & relaxing, what else does one need??

Speaking of riding…. On Saturday, this Saturday, the 5th, I’m once again riding in the ADA’s Tour de Cure!

Yep, just like last year, I’m putting my legs to good use, riding 100 miles throughout the northeast side of Columbus to raise money to help fight diabetes!!! Can I get a WOOT!

WOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

Niiiiice….  And just like last year, I’m asking for your help!  If you have a few bucks and want to sponsor my ass, I would be so grateful & appreciative!  Just click my picture of me rocking my Tour de Cure jersey.  Every dollar helps and I promise to do you proud and give you a fun-filled ride report when it’s all said and done!

Okay!  Now the music!  In appreciation & celebration of our victory in our Vinyl Mixtape Battle Royale, I’ve created another vinyl mixtape for you!  WHEEE!!!  I call this one “Prog The Needle”, as it’s mostly prog or proggish vinyl cuts that didn’t quite make our mixtape on Friday, put in order, cleaned and tagged up, just for you!  Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s not ALL prog, but tell me, after listening 1 to 5 that “Never Tell” doesn’t have elements of prog in it!  And NMH has some psych in it, which is where much prog came from and the Femmes were completely inspired by Velvet Underground and Peter Gabriel, though “Biko” isn’t prog, WAS uber-prog with Genesis and stuff and stuff and so on and so on.

Why not?

Exactly.  So, tell you what… Don’t worry about labels, if you aren’t familiar with some of this, give it a go (especially “Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes, a rather under-appreciated Yes song from Fragile), open yer ears, open yer mind, and get yer prog on as….

TSURURADIO Presents…
Prog The Needle?!?!

02 Frog Eyes – Styled By Dr. Roberts

05 The Decemberists – The Tain
06 Violent Femmes – Never Tell
07 Neutral Milk Hotel – Where You’ll Find Me Now
08 Velvet Underground – What Goes On

TSURURADIO vs. The Needle Drop: TSURURADIO Presents… Drop The Needle Mixtape!!!

I thought about doing a big write up, full of bombastic imagery….  but then, after watching countless minutes of Anthony jibber-jabber on at his v/blog, getting to know the enemy, be the enemy, touch the enemy in his sleep, snuggle with the enemy after slipping roofies in his drink down at the Shampoo Club that one night,  it seemed only appropriate to do this thing vlog-style, eh?

Eh, indeed!

Fuck it, here we go!

Gotta say, weird watching me & hearing me…. Not sure how I feel about any of that at all.  Forgot my glasses, huh, and what is going on with that quaff????

Some kinda quasi-greaser-come-over action???  Was I rocking that shit all day?  Damn!  For the record, that wall is blue, a sky blue.  Maybe next time I’ll go all high-def on ya so you can see all my luscious aging and shit!  Even give you a tour of the Tsuru residence??

Anywhosaldoosalwoosal…

This much I AM sure of, what follows is one BAD ASS mixtape, right from my collection, right from my heart, my soul, my balls, and my brain nuggets, spilled out to you, in two-sided vomit sessions, one needle in a groove at a time! PROJECT: In The Vinyl Rip Over the Sea!!!

February 27, 2010
By

Okay, my friends…. Do you love vinyl?  Do you have a record player???  Well, I’ve got a Project for you, for all of us.  My favourite thing about vinyl is that every single listening experience is different.  My record is different then your record, my turntable is different, my speakers, my needles, how I drop the needle, when I pick it up, how quickly I flip the record, etc, etc, etc makes every single listening experience unique.

If you listen to vinyl, you know all of this… But now it’s time to show the world.

The Project I propose to you, to everyone, is to take one of the greatest records of all time, Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and record your own vinyl experience.   No other album in recent memory has become as such a underground following and timelessness to it than this one and I couldn’t think of a better album for this project.

I don’t care how you do it, in a vaulted audiophile experience in super-Flac format, or with a shitty digital camera on video mode uploaded to youtube or something.  Play the record, record the record, and send it to me!  Let’s celebrate vinyl & share our experiences with this album with the world in what I’m calling…

PROJECT: In the Vinyl Rip Over The Sea!!!

To kick it off, I’ll re-present mine now as…

TSURURADIO Presents… In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

2. The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. Two and Three

7. Communist Daughter

Side B

Now… it’s YOUR TURN!  If you don’t own the record, go to your local record shop or Insound or Merge or where ever, just get it and let’s hear YOUR In The Aeroplane Over The Sea vinyl experience!!!

HURRY!  GO NOW!!!!

Cheers,

TSURURADIO Presents… And She Was Born In A Bottle Rocket, 1929 Mixtape!!!

February 12, 2010

Photography “Born In A Bottle Rocket” by Tsuru, Model by Isabella Misery

Well it’s time for the weekend.  Finally, right?  Can I get a high-five?

Sweet.

What you doing this weekend?  Looks like more snow here, so my riding will be relegated to The Tank.  BUT, if that good lard’s a-willin’ and the creeks don’t rise, Tuck and I will be driving out the route for April 3rd Super Awesome NO-FRILLS Bike Ride for Breast Cancer!

Keep an eye out for an update for a start location and route if all goes well!

WOOT!

I’m so excited for the ride.  No idea how many will show up.  But even it’s just a handful of people, it’ll be great and, of course, SUPER AWESOME!  Haha!

Okay…  got a little Friday mixtape for you today.  Kept it old school, just built a nice collection of songs in the order I’d like to hear them.  No “mixing”, no necessity for gapless play (though, I recommend it anyway because, well, those 2 sec gap things are just stupid).

This one was inspired by so many things.  Matt obsessing over Rural Alberta Advantage, gud giving us a Tom Waits New Orleans song down in the Society, catching Velvet Underground in a movie the other night, or like when Colin Meloy was having his mind blown by Besnard Lakes. Just little things like that, “Ghost”, of course, appears due to the photo at the top of this post, plus our discussion of The Greatest Song Trilogy Of All Time, & my desire to have the lyric tattooed on my arm ASAP.

So yeah, it’s the little things that seemed to hook onto me, latching to my brain.  Feels good, feels right.  And after all this #musicblogocide2k10 madness going, I wanted to end this week on a good note.  So, I’ll shut up and let’s just get to it.

Have a wonderful weekend, bundle up, and keep riding!  Oh, and by the way, got a “special valentine’s day” treat for you this weekend, well, maybe more of an anti-valentine’s day treat, by way of our good friend Neil.  Keep an eye out, should be ready by Sunday!!!  Okay, let’s do this as…

Random acts of kindness, the greatest song trilogy ever, and then Permalight by Rogue Wave…

February 4, 2010
By

“Born In A Bottlerocket No. 2″ by Me

Feeling a little random today, feeling a little “more extra” weird, you know, the kind where you look around at everyone else and wonder, “am I normal?”  I don’t know.  I know I’m odd, but am I ODD-odd?  What does even thinking about all this mean?  Don’t know, but I had a good moment this morning, one of those random acts of kindness that then spread to someone else like herpes at an LA scene (or is it “seen”) party.

At work, like most any other work, we’ve got your managers, associates, VPs, super-VPs, CEOs, assistants, and a million other titles for a million various job descriptions.  Then we have the hourly folk, the ones who work in the cafe, security, mailroom, etc, etc.  Now, this is not bragging or showing off, I swear, but being as that I was raised pretty broke by a divorced waitress, been homeless & sold off all my possessions more than once, and generally lived in either poverty or under massive debt in various points of my life, I always feel more akin to the hourly employees and always add an extra layer of friendly, always try to appreciate the work they do, etc, etc.  I think it’s important, even if you don’t believe in karma-type thingys, just be nice (far too many people aren’t).

So today, security, who stops traffic in the mornings to let people cross a busy private road, does just that, stops the traffic, I’m standing with another gentleman and as we cross, I say “thank you, have a great day man!”.  I hear the guy next to me kinda startle and then suddenly stammer out, “uh-thanks!”

Tiny tiny thing, pretty insignificant, and it may have meant nothing to the guy standing in the cold dealing with traffic, but it was kinda cool to see it spread, just like on TV.  I guess we can all learn a little something from Due South, eh?

Lesson here?  Be nice man.  Waitress being annoying?  Maybe she’s had a bad day?  Maybe her boss is an asshole?  Maybe she’s worried about paying rent?  Maybe she wishes she wasn’t busting her ass to give people food to cram in their mouths…  Mail room guy messed up and sent your package to Albuquerque, New Mexico?  Hey, we all fuck up, all the time.  Trust me, I know, I fuck up ALL THE TIME.

Little reminders like today, little things.  We all shit, we all wipe our asses, fart, burp, have bouts of diarrhea, have good days, have bad, your millionaire CEO to your bag boy at the grocery chain.  Everyone…  Well, except celebrities, they are perfect.

I’m sorry, but…. Ew.

Speaking of perfect, can we devote a few moments to talk about the GREATEST SONG TRILOGY OF ALL TIME????

Yeah?

Good.  This is not the first time we’ve thunked about this, probably even shared it a few times to boot.  But my go-to cathartic album (damn, used that word twice in two days?) and possibly one of the most amazing albums of all times, depending on who you ask, and I’d imagine probably one of the more over-blogged about albums is Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.

This is nothing new.  But there is something special in a trilogy, De La Soul once remarked that “3″ is indeed the magic number, and I tend to agree.  What makes ITAOTS so special, besides that it is, in and of itself, well, special, is it finishes with what I think is the greatest song trilogy EVER.

Yep, that right.  Ever.

The end begins with “Ghost”,  a driving, building, beautiful song (that also contains my very favourite lyric of all time, “And she was born in a bottlerocket, 1929! ” which I plan on tattooing on myself at some point in the near future).  It grows and builds, noisily yet melodically, before slipping into the goosebump inducing and oddly rocking (seriously, I’ve pulled more neck muscles listening to this than anything “metal” could ever hope) “Untitled” which ends on a climax, that any other album wishes they could end their album, hell, their whole career on.  But Jeff ain’t done yet, because we have the finale, and it’s quite the opposite, the denouement, if you will.  Lonely & harsh, a bit sad.  It all ends with Jeff putting down the guitar, kinda for good, walking away, possibly

Neutral Milk Hotel – 09 Ghost
Neutral Milk Hotel – 10 Untitled
Neutral Milk Hotel – 11 Two-Headed Boy Pt. Two

I love my version.  Mine’s my vinyl rip of the album.  “Two-Headed Boy Pt. Two”, and really the “end of Neutral Milk Hotel” becomes even more poignant as the waves of noise from the record basically consume Jeff & the guitar, emphasizing the end.  The last noise is the needle picking up.  Gets me everytime.

But like I said, NMH has been blogged/discussed/etc about ad nauseum, right?  And it’s time to move forward & move on and today we’ve been listening to the sweet new gem from the folks at Rogue Wave, Permalight!

Honestly, this leaked too soon.  This is a Spring album, maybe even Summer, what’s it doing in my ears a day before another batch of snow comes our way, I have no clue.  But it’s fun, somewhat light, starting things off with an acoustic little ditty before dripping into something that I think Phoenix would be proud to claim.

The key to Rogue Wave is that voice, it’s higher pitched and kinda dreamy, always adding an element of ethereal to every song, even when it’s just your basic pop song.  A fun, diverse album, a nice counter to the weight of ITAOTS…  A palette cleanser, if you will.

Enjoy!

01 Solitary Gun
02 Good Morning
03 Sleepwalker
