Old School Week: TSURURADIO Community Presents… Penguin’s Bubblegum Mixtape!!!

HAHA!  I LOVE it!!!  Our little community of music freaks & geeks is joining in the old school fun!  First Ari brought the DCFC heat yesterday, looks like Dorice has somethin’ brewing for you, and now I get the pleasure to present a mixtape from Penguin???  Love it!!!  This time, it’s a bunch of genuinely awesomely awesome oldies, but better to let Penguin describe it, eh?

What What? A mixtape of rarely heard, fantastic bubblegum tracks?

Did you say old, hard to find records in pristine quality? Damn straight.

That’s right, I’ve listened through hours of garbage old poprock songs from the 60′s to get a half hour of some golden material. For those that don’t know, bubblegum pop is a combination of rock and pop genres with emphasis on the vocals and happy-go-lucky lyrics (although the tape doesn’t show THAT much happiness). The songs are also short, generally under 3 minutes – none of that 5-minutes-of-stretching-the-song-out-forever. More like Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma’am. I’m very happy with the songs I found and I hope you will be to.

Fantastic!  Short & sweet… So, in the spirit of the mixtape, I’m going to shut the hell up and get on with it!  Thank you so much Penguin, what an awesome addition to this week’s festivities!

TSURURADIO Presents… Prog The Needle?!?! A mixtape of outtakes from the epic vinyl mixtape battle royale!

May 31, 2010

Photo & subsequent “hipsterization” by me!!!

Well…. I was looking forward to a long, hard bike ride today, but apparently Accuweather wasn’t so “accu” after all as the afternoon thunderstorms hit at 8am, just as I arrived on my bike at Tuck’s to ride.  Nice.  It’s not the rain that bothers me, I love riding in the rain, but heavy wind with thunder & lightning, well, even I know when to say, “hmmm……. maybe we should wait a bit, eh?”

One man’s lost is another man’s gain, right?  So instead of waiting until this afternoon for today’s special post, here we are!

What can I say?  Friday…  Man, we, well, destroyed The Needle Drop.  I mean literally!  His server has been down since Friday afternoon!  I think we literally actually destroyed them!  I…. I didn’t mean too! I guess I don’t know my own mixtape strength??  Hot damn.

In celebration, Baby & I went up to the park for a picnic on Friday with champagne & goat cheese & meat & crackers (photo up above), and it was quite nice.  In fact, the whole weekend has been nothing but nice.  Riding & relaxing, what else does one need??

Speaking of riding…. On Saturday, this Saturday, the 5th, I’m once again riding in the ADA’s Tour de Cure!

Yep, just like last year, I’m putting my legs to good use, riding 100 miles throughout the northeast side of Columbus to raise money to help fight diabetes!!! Can I get a WOOT!

WOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

Niiiiice….  And just like last year, I’m asking for your help!  If you have a few bucks and want to sponsor my ass, I would be so grateful & appreciative!  Just click my picture of me rocking my Tour de Cure jersey.  Every dollar helps and I promise to do you proud and give you a fun-filled ride report when it’s all said and done!

Okay!  Now the music!  In appreciation & celebration of our victory in our Vinyl Mixtape Battle Royale, I’ve created another vinyl mixtape for you!  WHEEE!!!  I call this one “Prog The Needle”, as it’s mostly prog or proggish vinyl cuts that didn’t quite make our mixtape on Friday, put in order, cleaned and tagged up, just for you!  Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s not ALL prog, but tell me, after listening 1 to 5 that “Never Tell” doesn’t have elements of prog in it!  And NMH has some psych in it, which is where much prog came from and the Femmes were completely inspired by Velvet Underground and Peter Gabriel, though “Biko” isn’t prog, WAS uber-prog with Genesis and stuff and stuff and so on and so on.

Why not?

Exactly.  So, tell you what… Don’t worry about labels, if you aren’t familiar with some of this, give it a go (especially “Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes, a rather under-appreciated Yes song from Fragile), open yer ears, open yer mind, and get yer prog on as….

06 Violent Femmes – Never Tell

I thought about doing a big write up, full of bombastic imagery….  but then, after watching countless minutes of Anthony jibber-jabber on at his v/blog, getting to know the enemy, be the enemy, touch the enemy in his sleep, snuggle with the enemy after slipping roofies in his drink down at the Shampoo Club that one night,  it seemed only appropriate to do this thing vlog-style, eh?

Eh, indeed!

Fuck it, here we go!

Gotta say, weird watching me & hearing me…. Not sure how I feel about any of that at all.  Forgot my glasses, huh, and what is going on with that quaff????

Some kinda quasi-greaser-come-over action???  Was I rocking that shit all day?  Damn!  For the record, that wall is blue, a sky blue.  Maybe next time I’ll go all high-def on ya so you can see all my luscious aging and shit!  Even give you a tour of the Tsuru residence??

Anywhosaldoosalwoosal…

Is it the end of music blogging as we know it? And TsuruBride Presents… Bibliomania!!!

May 4, 2010
By

Well, my friends… The end of music bloggerin’ as you & I know it may be ending soon.

It’s true.

You see, over in Ireland, there’s a group called IMRO that is basically a union for music artists that have decided it would be a good thing to force music bloggers who host music on their site to pay licensing fees to “play” the music on the site if it’s available in Ireland (of course it’s available in Ireland, as far as I know, none of block any countries).

Though initially they are targeting Irish bloggers, like Nialler9, The Torture Garden, and Asleep On A Compost Heap, they’ve made it clear, they will require every blog that is accessible to Ireland to pay up, even if they don’t “play” Irish bands.  It’s a very strange thing and, if they succeed, opens up a terrible precedent.  If bloggers pay up to Ireland, what’s to stop the ASCAP, SOCAN or PRS from doing the same thing?

I make 0, that’s a big fat Z-E-R-O, dollars on this site (it’s actually a money-losing endeavour with server fees and what not).  If suddenly I’m forced to pay licensing in Ireland and then the States and whatever other country decides they want in, well, yeah, no…. Ain’t happening.  Me & probably every other blogger you know will do one of 3 things.

1.  Stop the music.  Maybe embed some licensed stream or maybe a legal 30 second clip (Mmm…. 12 minute prog songs summed up in 30 secs?  Awesome-o) but that’d be it.  Sounds exciting, eh? In this world of portability, where you listen to the music pretty much everywhere BUT attached to your computer, embed onlys are pretty limp.

2. Go rogue & underground, ala PirateBay or whatever.  Host the site through some secret country, anonymously, etc, and hope they never find you.  Exciting. Personally though, bloggerin’ ain’t worth going to the pokey for…

3.  Quit. It’s already a scary place with Blogger shutting people down, DMCA notices to twitter, and crazy shit.  Now paying up? Nope!

I’m too old to “go rogue”, so I’d probably go to 30 sec embeds or, if it’s allowed, Soundcloud or something…. OR just say “fuck this”.

Nialler9 wrote a wonderful article with tons of details here. For more info, The Guardian also has an article & Shane at The Torture Garden has now written on it a couple times.  Basically it all comes down to the same thing.  Blogs, love them or hate them, are a part of the music industry now, we are part of “getting the word out” and getting bands the press they may or may not get other wise.

What’s funny, sad, etc, is that alot of these blogs, me included, are inundated with emails from labels, bands, PR people, etc asking us to listen & share their music, for FREE!  Listen to this, post this, please!  This includes bands covered by the IMRO.  Talk about a mixed message, eh?

So… what if this passes through and the bloggers that keep on bloggerin’ pay up, then the next one wants money, then the next. At some point, you won’t be left with much except the rich “opinion makers” which is why so many people turned to blogs in the first place!  Because the opinion of the few is too often, well, crap.

Go to Nialler’s write up, follow up, learn what you can do, write the IMRO, make yourself heard. Basically, give this proposal a BIG. FAT.

Okay, before we call this a day, let’s get some music going, eh?  And man I’ve got a GEM & special treat for you!!!  The unimitatable TsuruBride has made a rare and elusive mixtape!!!  This one was made for Crane’s Day down in the Society for her Crane Buddy and now that everyone’s got their Crane’s Day gifts, I can finally share this with you!!!  It’s called Bibliomania and given Baby’s penchant for readin’, I’ll give you oooone liiiittle gueeeess on the theme.

It’s books.

Man… really? I had to tell you that?  Oh my.  20 gems blatantly and not-so-blatantly about books, reading, and/or adorable librarians!  HOT!  So let’s do this, okay?  Let’s keep the music going, let’s keep the “blogosphere” going, let’s keep, not just my voice, but really everyone’s voices heard, and let’s get our mixtape on as……

TSURURADIO Presents… MIXTAPES WEEK: Easy as A-B-C by Peanut!!!

I hate mixtapes!

This might sound like a strange introduction to an article about a mixtape, but I just do. I hate them. They are an absolute pain in the ass to make! Selecting the songs. Tagging the songs. Uploading the songs. It’s a lot of work and somehow the end results never seem to be as I imagined them.

Some people just have it in them to make good mixtapes. People like Tsuru for instance. Of course he’s had a lot of practice, since he’s posted approximately  6,234 of them here on TSURURADIO over the years (check out his most recent one ‘I Want To Be Your American Idol‘). But hey, it’s a quality nonetheless!

Anyway, I haven’t got nearly as much experience and I also happen to be a lazy basterd. So my contribution to the Mixtape Week is a lazy one. Sort of lazy one. Not really that lazy, because it was still a lot of work. Selecting, tagging, etc. you get it right? The lazy part of it is that I just picked some of my fave songs in my current iTunes library, browsing through the artists from A-Z (hence the title). So it’s become a kind of ramshackle affair with nothing coherent about it, except the fact that I like each and every song in the mix. Go check it out!

TSURURADIO Presents… MIXTAPES WEEK: [ ...Living, Breathing, Dying... ] by nelso!!!

Oh my, what a week we’ve had so far, eh?  Honestly, I didn’t know if I’d be able to keep MIXTAPES WEEK going all week!  So many hyperlinks… so little time!  But alas, here we are, Friday, and we’ve got yet another amazing mixtape to share with you.  Also, waiting in the wings for my Crane Buddy to receive her Crane’s Day gift is the mixtape I made for her!  It’s a doozy that I plan on sharing with you ASAP, but she gets dibs on listening first, sorry — wouldn’t be all that special if I let you go before her, right?

Right.

Okay, as much as I hate to keep this short, it’s looking to be a nutty day today, it’s chilly outside, Baby’s sick, and dammit, I’m going to get a little lunchtime ride in to spin some ache out of my legs before a big (maybe 100 miler) ride tomorrow!   So, let’s get to the good stuff, eh?  And by good stuff, of course I’m talking about [...Living, Breathing, Dying...] by nelso!

Image
“Ahh life is all about balance, this mix has balance, in tempo, up and down, its living, its breathing, and eventually dying…”  says nelso, so true, about life, about this mixtape, about damn near everything.  I will also add that life is about lines, it’s just one line after another sometimes, isn’t?  Line up at the stop light, line up in the lane on the interstate, line up at the exit, line up to park, line up for some coffee, line up to pay, line up to even leave!  Ugh.

Sorry, I digressed there, I really hate lines.

Fortunately, this mixtape is NOT about lines.  It’s at times whimsical, then fun, then slow & introspective, sometimes a interesting mix of all of the above, like “Whale In The Night” by Firs.  As nelso said, it ebbs, it flows, it’s up & down, as is all things, and it’s quite brilliant.  A wonderful conclusion to a rather ebb & flow kinda week if you ask me!  Thank you so much nelso! So what say you?  Shall we get ‘er on?   Yeah, I think so too.

TSURURADIO Presents… MIXTAPES WEEK!

[ ...Living, Breathing, Dying... ] by nelso!!!

1. Annuals – Springtime
2. Mesita – Living/breathing
3. Shout Out Louds – Very Loud
4. Nurses – Technicolor
5. French Kicks – She Said So
6. Rosie and Me – Bonfires
7. Bedroom Eyes – Dancing Under Influence
8. Firs – Whale In The Night
9. Beach House – Lover of Mine
10. Ramona Falls – Russia
11. Mimicking Birds – Burning Stars
12. Peasant – The End
13. The Spinto Band – Jackhammer (slim version)
14. All Get Out – Wasting All My Breath
15. Local Natives – Cards and Quarters
16. Wye Oak – My Creator
17. She & Him – Riding In My Car (NRBQ)
18. Fanfarlo – Comets
19. The Farewell Circuit – The Inexorable March of Time
20. Bon Iver – Come Talk to Me

Thanks again, so so so much, nelso!!!  Wonderful, wonderful mixtape, as always!!!   No promises (like I said, I may be riding 100 miles tomorrow for the 38th annual Woodstock COP ride), but I’ll try to get at least one more up before we start a-new on Monday!!!

Cheers & may all your tubes full of air!

Okay, before we begin, just a tiny tiny follow up to our iPad-related post the other day:

Just sayin’…

Okay, movin’ on.  Were was we about to begin?  Oh yeah, hot digitty!  AdventurerNeil’s first post already went up while I slept?  I LOVE it when that happens!!!  Wonderful post Neil, it really was great to have you up, hang out with you, and battle those ridiculous wind to save a few boobies!

Alright, it’s Thursday and MIXTAPES WEEK is still in full-steam-ahead mode!!!  Today’s mixtape comes with a tiny little story.  You see, though I’m not the most anonymous blogger in the blogging universe, at work, except the people who are my outside-of-work friends, the TSURUNATION Celebration & Jubilation Actuation does not exist.  Well, I’ve been outed.

Got an email the other day that basically went like this, “I just figured it out.  YOU are Tsurrrrrrrrrrradddio guy!”  haha!  Love it.  I wondered when & if someone would put the two things together.  Well, it turns out, not only is my new friend DanaMonstah a music lover (and TSURURADIO fan, woot!), but she has a music blog of her own chock full of mixtapes!!

Well, it’s MIXTAPES WEEK, I told DanaMonstah, how about I share one over at TSURURADIO?  She said she do me one better and made a brand-spanking new one for us today, appropriately called For TSRU, 4u!

First off… Adorable album art!!!  I just want to keep him in my pocket and play with him in lines & in meetings!  But, album art aside, what a sweet mixtape this is. It’s actually a bit more dancey than what I normally listen too, making for a sweet & super infectious groove for a rainy Thursday that needs all the super infectuous groovin’ it can get!!!

I think I said it yesterday, but on man, I’m LOVING MIXTAPES WEEK!!!  So many new tunes, so many new genres, so many new, uh, just everything!!!  I love it!  So without further adieu let’s get our next one a-playin!  Thank you so much DanaMonstah!  Make sure you head on over to her site and show her some proper love, okay?  But first, push play and get ready to shake what the good lard a-gave ya!!!

Howdy howdy!!!  It’s already hump day, who you humpin’ today?  You enjoying MIXTAPES WEEK as much as I am??  Sweet bajiggity jesus on a stick, dipped in batter, deep fried, and served with a dollop of brown horseradish mustard it’s been nuffin’ but good times in the house!

Are you having fun yet?  I know I am!  nobleybones mixtape yesterday & an itty ari interwebs today, but whoa-ho-ho-ho, we ain’t done yet!  Not even remotely!  We got more mixtapes coming at you.  I sure hope you cleared off a little room on your iPod, iPhone, iTouch, or, to be more topical iPad!

Speaking of the iPad.

I saw a photo yesterday, a photo from Saturday’s launch of the iPad that struck me as so powerful, so telling, so full of so many words, quite possibly a thousand, that I feel compelled to share it with you now.  It was embedded in a flash slide show, but screen shot and crop later, I had this…

It’s from this news site.   Now, let it be known I have nothing against the purchasing of gadgets or the iPad or anything like that.  You want an iPad, you got $500 or more to spend, by all means go buy one.  But… people, c’mon, let’s not pretend like the purchasing of the gadget is something it’s not.  Don’t know what I mean?  Let’s break this down.  First, the guy who bought the gadget.

LOL, kinda drew a penis there, didn’t I?

Not only is he wearing a “Rocked To The Core” or possibly “Rocket To The Core” shirt along with his “Smug Mug” camera strap, fine, whatever, but he walks out the store, raises his hand, “trophy” in hand, cheering, as if he just accomplished a feat!  Dude.  You waited in a line & made a purchase.  That’s life, one line after another, most of them resulting in purchases in some form or another.  This is not an iPad phenomenon in any way shape or form, we saw it with the iPhone, we saw it with the Motorola RAZR, we saw it for beanie babies, tickle-me elmos, Wii’s, etc, etc, etc.  Most of those items are either collecting dust or sitting in a landfill somewhere.

How sad is our culture that we see buying some “thing” as an accomplishment to be rewarded and recognized?  But hey, it’s not just him!  Look at the employees!  No, not the “hot blonde” who is playing the cheerleader staring at the “football”  that just won the game or something, no… I’m talking about the other guy.

Look at his glee!  He’s not happy for red there, no he’s looking beyond him, at the crowd, egging on the applause!  Validating the consumer’s sense of accomplishment and encouraging the crowd to do the same, which will then give them that same feeling of “having done something special” when they finally get their gadget.  I mean, look at the guy who’s next.

Oh, he’s applauding… but he’s “next”, he knows his moment is about to come.  He looks proud for the other consumer but also “knowingly waiting in the wings” for his own moment.

Yes… enjoy your moment Bob, enjoy it while you can, it will be fleeting because soon, SOON, I will have my own iPad!  MUWAHAHAHAHA!

Funny.  I typed Bob, then remembered there was a caption, read and saw his name is Robert.  How funny. Anywhosaldosal, we ain’t done.  Check out the guy in the back.

Really?  THIS is a mobile photo/twitter/facebook memory/status capturing moment for you?  Watching Bob come back from “the hunt” with his kill raised up high?

@freindnotatapplestore omg, store open! buying my iPad soon! http://twitpic.com/wishthatwasme.jpg

As telling as this photo is about the odd creatures that are called humans, my favourite bit of the photo is the following:

Rumpelstiltskin?  A gnome? Gollum, peering out from behind to get a glimpse of Precious? Not sure, but whoever he his, I think he works for our evil eye-browed “next in line” guy.  A kind of “Igor Arrangement” I believe.

*doing my best Igor impersonation, it’s pretty awesome*

Strange, we are, aren’t we?  Why do we wait in lines to get our hands on something we know, we KNOW, will be easily available soon enough, AND cheaper, AND better, AND faster!  I mean, take the iPad, maxed at at 64gbs, no USB, no 3G, no camera, no serious multitasking, etc, etc, on this release, for at least $500?  How many of you spent that much on the first generation of RAZR’s?  Now, they give them away as doorstops!

I learned a long time ago not to be an early adopter, how much money did I blow to be the first to get something that would be a million times better & cheaper only a short time later.

I remember back in college, friend of mine showed up to school with what looked to be an ugly cigar box, but what it actually was was a digital camera that took really bad 640 x 480 VGA quality photos, no flash, for over $2000.  We marveled. Now, I can go to CVS, get a 2mb camera that fits in my watch pocket of my jeans for a few bucks.

Look….. I love you, early adopters.  Because of you, Apple, Nikon, Shimano (see Di2 electronic shifters), etc, etc, etc get lots of money for more R&D to make the products faster, cheaper, and better later on, so I’m not against early adopters, but man, I do find the whole thing fascinating!

We really are funny creatures, aren’t we?

I tell you what’s not funny, Brettling’s Spring 2010 mixtape called “Walk”!  It’s just fucking awesome!

Nice segue, eh?

Self-described as folk, experimental, psychedelic, electronica, & indie I was a little skeptical I’d be into it, but lo & behold if I’m not completely absorbed!  It’s pretty chill & mellow, wanting me to be out in the very flowers he chose for the album art, having a picnic with Baby, sniffing the flowers, dodging the bees.

Mmm…

Man, I want to go on a picnic now.  Well, lard knows I’ve jibbered on enough, so let’s get to it!  Thank you Brettling so much for an amazing mixtape, but now it’s your turn to enjoy as…

Well, what can I say???  Saturday was epic in more ways than one!  First off, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!  With your help & your legs, on a windy day with impending rain, on a holiday weekend filled with egg hunts, church services, and men dressed up as bunnies, we were able to raise…

$610 for breast cancer research!!!!

Personally, I think that’s fantastic!   Thank you so much to everyone who took the time, took their bikes, and showed up to my super SUPER no-frills charity ride (seriously, pink poster board & a boom box playing a mixtape on the hood of the car, an almond jar to hold money, maps held down by windshield wipers, and my sorry ass jibber-jabbering with everyone)! And what a ride it was, eh?  We had families (and a couple cuties on cruisers) doing the 10 mile ride, Baby & quite a few others rocking the 20, tackling the rather annoying hill to the “Clubview Loop”, and then about 8 of us attacking the 50 mile route!

Here’s some of us before kick off in the parking lot (me in the knickers and white hat running around nervously while Baby deftly handled the money).

The biggest surprise?  The wind.  It was rather mild and pushing north making for a rather fast and rather furious first half a ride for everyone.  Speaking from the 50 milers point of view, we cruised at 25-30mph for a good portion of the northern ride!  As the day moved on, the winds started getting nuttier and nuttier.  By the time we headed west, oh, we started to feel it.  Cross winds whipping us around on a busy street, giving us that feeling of impending doom as we knew the southern part of the route was approaching.

And then we turned left.

All you could do was alternate between gritting your teeth to fight the wind & laugh your ass off at the nuttiness of what turned out to be 50 mph gust hitting us in our faces as we pushed south, basically acting as a brick wall!  One by one our little re-grouped peloton broke off.  All it would take was for someone would lose the wheel in front of them and then *POOF* they were gone.

At one point, we stopped at a CVS to try to regroup, finding only 4 of us were left!  We did see #5, but he missed his turn, didn’t see us, and kept on trucking (don’t worry, we found him later).

We barreled on, trying to stick together, losing people for moments, but finding a little relief on bits of westward travel for our small group of four to stick together.  We got some protection when we got back to the bike path, then it was every man for himself back to the finish line where one by one we all completed our rides!  Tuck & I had a sprint finish, where he completely owned me.  LOL.

I know I say it alot, and often I kinda have fun with the word, but that wind, oh my….  yeah, our ride was EPIC! Epic in every sense of the word.  And fun.  My favourite combination!

In my nervousness in organizing the ride, I took no pictures.  ha!  Nor foursquared nor tumblred nor tweeted during the ride!  lol….  Oh well.  I think our next new writer (post TBD) adventurerneil, who made his way up to Columbus from freaking Colorado to ride, took pictures, so as soon as he’s back, rested, and photo-uploading inclined, we will hopefully have a few pics of the ride.

It really was great. Thank you again everyone.  I can’t wait for Part II:  The Wrath Of The Riders!!!  And I’m not waiting until next year!  WOOOT!

But first, it’s time to celebrate!  Honestly, when thinking about what would make a proper celebration and get TSURURADIO back on track for musical libations, I could only think of one thing…

Mixtapes.  Lots & lots of mixtapes!

Fortunately for me, and therefore, for you, I’ve got mixtapes up the wazoo at my disposal thanks to the amazing mixologists down in Our Society!  So I thunked to myself, how about we celebrate with the inundation of mixtape musical celebration and harmonic coagulation ALL WEEK LONG!  What do you say to that?

Me too!

First up?  nobleybones and his spring time mixtape full of McCartney, Surfer Blood, & Coconut Records Donde Esta La Playa?!!!  Just what we needed as the temps continue their warm trend, as the trees start blossoming, so what say you to starting up the celebrations?????  Let’s do it as…

Tomorrow We Ride For Boobies, Today TSURURADIO Presents Bicycle, Bicycle, Bicycle, I Want To Ride My Bicycle Mixtape!!!

April 2, 2010
By

TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh man oh man oh man!  This is it! I’m a nervous wreck between getting everything ready, dealing with some bike issues — really?  bike issues the week of my ride???? — and what I’m hoping is just congestion from pollen??  Canadian Ma-Ma was in town last night on their way back up Toronto from Florida, then we have a rider driving up from Colorado to participate tomorrow, etc, etc, etc…… yeah, I’m stressed!  But once we are on our bikes tomorrow, it will all wash away!  AND, you won’t have to listen to me jibber on about it until next time!  HA!

Oh!  And for those wanting to know where to go at the Park Of Roses, look for the following guy, in the following jersey, & the following bike (you can call her Clem) sitting by a big pink poster board at a picnic table!

Me & Clem by TsuruBride

Are you riding?  I hope so… I hope to see you there.  If not, keep an eye out on the tumblrs, twitters, or facebooks for updates & mobile photos!!!  And those of you needing info on the ride, follow the link below or click on the sign above!!!

* * DETAILS ARE HERE, SO, YOU KNOW, GO HERE NOW * *

Oh man.  It’s intense in my head.  Seriously, I can barely hear the music blaring in my headphones!  I was going to try to write about Cocorosie today or maybe catch up on some tsuruloosies, like the new National song out or that new Blitzen Trapper (mp3 via MFR), there’s even something called Twin Sister that is hot I’ve never heard of but you know, I can’t… I can barely focus, plus I’m working on a new mixtape for Crane’s Day and honestly, the idea of “evaluating” a song or album or whatever just sounds…. Daunting.

So instead, we are going to dip into the archives.  Now, I’m not a traditional man, or hang with traditional men (though I do like to chill and try to read zen – dang, got a sudden urge to listen to “Steal My Sunshine“), but it seems on important bike rides, I tend to share this little bicycle mixtape we built last year.  We’ve had a lot of new readers join us since we last presented it in August for our 100 mile Pelotonia bike ride (WARNING: photo of my shaved gams after the link), so how about we pop this up again?????

WHEEE!

Okay, seriously, my brain is toast, so this is it.  I LOVE YOU ALL, HOORAY FOR BIKE RIDES, HOORAY FOR BOOBIES!!!!  HOPE TO SEE YOU TOMORROW!!! But for now…

Maps & Routes, Mini-Vacations, and TSURURADIO Presents… Eileen I’ll Hum This Tune Forever Mixtape!!!

March 11, 2010
By

Alright my friends, it’s about time for this bird to take a day off and go see Mama & Sister Tsuru down in Flo-Ri-Da!  But before I do…. RIDE UPDATE!

Did you see that the TSURURADIO SUPER AWESOME NO-FRILLS BIKE RIDE for BREAST CANCER on APRIL 3RD has been updated with Maps & Routes???  That’s right!  The routes are solidified!  Here’s what we’ve got….  We’ve got a lovely riverside bike path 10 miler, a slightly more challenging 20 miler, then the epic 50 miler for the experienced and seasoned riders!  Going to be EPIC!!!!  Are you riding with us? I hope so!!!  If not, then wherever you are, get some friends together, bring $10, $20, whatever a pop, put it in a pot, go for a bike ride and send it to your favourite charity!  That’s the whole point!  Anyone can do this.  You don’t need to wait for a Lance Armstrong to show up, or the American Diabetes Association to put on a ride or a run or a whatever, you can do this anywhere and at any time!  BUT, if you are in Columbus on April 3rd and you got a bike, I sure hope to see you at mine!

Now unfortunately for these gams o’ mine — NOTE: need to sing a parody of Guns & Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” but cycling version that goes “Sweet Gams O’ Miiiiiiine” at my next group ride — there won’t be any riding this weekend for me as I’m not about to try to pack my bike for a tiny 3 day trip to Tampa, but seeing the family (including my snowbird Canadian in-laws (two birds, or make that about 5 birds, with one stone!)) more than makes up for it, eh?  I think so too.  Time off tomorrow means a busy day today, so what do you say we get right on to los musica, my little going away present to you, and man it’s a doozy!  2.1 hours, 26 songs of new, less than new, and pretty darn old songs that have gotten stuck in my mind, my ears, and in my heart, all laid out in proper listening order, packaged up, labeled up, zipped up, & uploaded just for you.

*smooch*

So let’s do this! Get ‘er loaded up on her player of choice and have a wonderful weekend!  I’ll see you all on the Twitters, the Facebooks, &/or our Society this weekend but if all that’s not your cup o’ tea, well, then, I guess I’ll see you back here on Monday.  Until then, enjoy as…

TSURURADIO Community Presents… AdventurerNeil’s Bring Out Your Dead! (heart) Compilation!!!

February 14, 2010
By

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day.  Now, Baby & I don’t celebrate it, not for any particular reason, I guess with her birthday, our anniversary, and the holidays JUST passing, we don’t feel the need to go out and buy each other another gift.  Rather save the money for a little vacation action this year!  But, alot of people DO celebrate and maybe tougher, a lot people EXPECT some kind of celebration.  Want to hear a sad one? Yesterday on my rollcycling Twitter, someone in the cycling world gleefully tweeted how all his wife wants for Valentine’s Day is for him to do the dishes, no presents, just that.

Let me ask you.  How awesome of a partner can you be, when all she wants, is just for this one day, that you get off your ass and give her a hand.  Wow. Sad thing is… how many people DO wait til a holiday, say Valentine’s or Mother’s Day before they “do something”?  Dude. Turn off the TV and go do the fucking dishes.

*sigh*

Well… that’s just one component of these awesome-O “holidays”  The others can be worse.  Why is being “alone on Valentine’s day” and worse than being alone on any other day?  Why Valentine’s day to propose?  Why not your own special day? I don’t know man.

Fortunately for you and me, we got AdventurerNeil, his letter, and an amazing compilation to help get us all through this holiest of holy days…  Go on, Neil, TESTIFY!!!

Dear Aaron,

Why oh why do relationships come with absolutely miserable expiration dates like Nov 1, or Dec 25, or some other depressing wintery time? I don’t know. I think that the cold scares love away, and for that, I will never forgive it.

Have you ever noticed how relationships (and major moments in them) can come to be defined simply by a song or two? Further, I believe music is the way we come to love and accept all of the small moments in between. A number of the songs on this compilation were introduced to me by females who would later break my heart. I’d stop giving my heart away so freely… really, I would… but it seems to me that to do so is to DIE a little on the inside. And I’m alive to LIVE, goddammit!

This is a true romantic’s compilation, meant for the dreamers, sent for the feint of heart. And the lyrics… damn! Could they be any more fitting? I tried to make it 3 things: personal, timely, and timeless. If the music doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, you may want to see a cardiologist for a new set of strings.

One of the things I like about sad songs is that they are kind of trump cards. Not that this actually happened, but let’s say I play “Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken” by Camera Obscura at the start of a game. She plays, oh, for example, “For Today” by Jessica Lea Mayfield. Blamo! Check mate! She wins all the pogs, sinks my battleship, etc. Or as the Avett Brothers might say… “But if love is a game, girl, then you’re gonna win. I’ll spend the rest of my life bringing victory in!”

You may ask why would I make such an exhaustive mix of painful emotional shit. Well, have you ever subconsciously resisted something? Then you know how it can grow and grow. I’ve noticed myself doing that with sad songs recently… tucking them away, fearing their power. The emotional skeletons in our closets can literally become the elephants in the room (how’s that for a mixed metaphor?). It is with great cathartic joy, then, that I bring out my dead! (heart) and present you with a compilation of songs that are beautiful, sad, and not easy to confront at all. Every sadness needs its catharsis – catharsis is truth. And the truth, my friend, will set you free.

Merry Fuckin’ Corporate Love Day,
AdventurerNeil

PS. If a lot of these look familiar, it’s because I’ve been listening to TSRURURADIO pretty much non-stop… I tried to avoid too many repetitions of already loved Tsuru tracks, but some were un-pass-up-able. Thanks again for all that you do, and please keep up the awesome.

Note to Readers: I kept that in to be true to the letter, not for an ego boost.  But man, did my ego boost!

PPS. If you do host this, can you please introduce as: “AdventurerNeil’s Bring Out Your Dead! (heart) Compilation”.. thanks!

PPPS. READERS SHOULD NOTE that if they are depressed, bi-polar, suffering a recent heartbreak, having a miserable winter, etc., that they should SEEK HELP from friends/family/professionals, and not wallow in depressing music. I listen, I let myself feel. But I refuse to engage in extended wallowing, and so should everyone else! “It isn’t right to sit around and think about the awful things that get you down”

TSURURADIO Presents… And She Was Born In A Bottle Rocket, 1929 Mixtape!!!

February 12, 2010
By

Photography “Born In A Bottle Rocket” by Tsuru, Model by Isabella Misery

Well it’s time for the weekend.  Finally, right?  Can I get a high-five?

Sweet.

What you doing this weekend?  Looks like more snow here, so my riding will be relegated to The Tank.  BUT, if that good lard’s a-willin’ and the creeks don’t rise, Tuck and I will be driving out the route for April 3rd Super Awesome NO-FRILLS Bike Ride for Breast Cancer!

Keep an eye out for an update for a start location and route if all goes well!

WOOT!

I’m so excited for the ride.  No idea how many will show up.  But even it’s just a handful of people, it’ll be great and, of course, SUPER AWESOME!  Haha!

Okay…  got a little Friday mixtape for you today.  Kept it old school, just built a nice collection of songs in the order I’d like to hear them.  No “mixing”, no necessity for gapless play (though, I recommend it anyway because, well, those 2 sec gap things are just stupid).

This one was inspired by so many things.  Matt obsessing over Rural Alberta Advantage, gud giving us a Tom Waits New Orleans song down in the Society, catching Velvet Underground in a movie the other night, or like when Colin Meloy was having his mind blown by Besnard Lakes. Just little things like that, “Ghost”, of course, appears due to the photo at the top of this post, plus our discussion of The Greatest Song Trilogy Of All Time, & my desire to have the lyric tattooed on my arm ASAP.

So yeah, it’s the little things that seemed to hook onto me, latching to my brain.  Feels good, feels right.  And after all this #musicblogocide2k10 madness going, I wanted to end this week on a good note.  So, I’ll shut up and let’s just get to it.

Have a wonderful weekend, bundle up, and keep riding!  Oh, and by the way, got a “special valentine’s day” treat for you this weekend, well, maybe more of an anti-valentine’s day treat, by way of our good friend Neil.  Keep an eye out, should be ready by Sunday!!!  Okay, let’s do this as…

The TSURURADIO Community Presents… nelso’s Gonna Leave It All Behind… Mixtape!!!

January 29, 2010
By

Hello hello, it’s Friday Friday and man o’ man another fun weekend ahead!  Lots of craftin’ and artsin’ and cyclin’ and even a little road trippin’ to Cincinnatin’ for a photoshoot.  This time, it’s Baby’s turn to get in front of the lens (tech speak, sorry) and amazing photographer and model Claudia’s turn to shoot!

Now, I’ll be there, camera(s) in tow, to shoot the shoot (did I just blow yer mind???) as 1) I want to see how another fine art photographer works & 2) Claudia wants photos of her work (win-win!) so keep an eye out from me for some samplage, but follow Baby & Claudia will be the ones to follow for the super hawtness to come!

That’s tomorrow, meaning a little road trip over to Cinci meaning we’re going to have to take advantage of it and figure something out to do!  Maybe some bi-age (hipster for “vintage”) shopping for shoots and for shits and giggles?  We’ll see…

But, before we head out for the weekend, got a little sumfin fer ya!  Society member nelso brought us a delightfully chill mixtape and I’m super excited to share with you now called Gonna Leave It All Behind…

Here’s what he had to say about it:

The new year is an interesting time for many people, either we take it seriously, or think its just another day in the life. For me, it is also my birthday and I like to take inventory of what I plan to leave behind… while moving into a more positive way of life! These songs help me reflect…. that’s all

What else is there to say?  Let’s get to it then!
