Peanut’s Playground: Inspiration, where it’s gone and where to get it. Also Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti!

It’s been a while since I last posted on TSURURADIO. The reason for this is simple: lack of inspiration.

I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Inspiration for me is something that comes and goes, and unfortunatley I’m not able to tap into some hidden reservoir of ideas and energy. This in huge contrast to our leader Tsuru who seems to be able to write, bike, shoot, paint, sing and dance even while sleeping.

What isn’t exactly helping either is the ENORMOUS flood of new (and recently discovered old) music coming my way. In the past week my ‘what to listen to today playlist’ has exploded, and there is no end in sight. For someone who does most of his listening in the office it’s quite hard to really appreciate new stuff when there is so much to choose from. A lot gets lost in the mix.

Now this doesn’t mean that I haven’t discovered anything worthwhile. Because I have. And I will report on them as usual (read: semi-frequent). Today’s offering:

Before Today by Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

Weird little album this is. A grower also. It gets better with each listen (untill you’ve had your fill that is). At least, that’s what I think. I actually remember laying it aside after the first two spins, and I will admit that it certainly isn’t suited for every occasion.

Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti like to mix up the genres, and while this works for the album as a whole, I can imagine individual tracks won’t hit home. This is illustrated by the fact that Tsuru thought a song like Round and Round was merely “Kinda meh” but Neil found it good enough to include it in his (excellent) It’s a Hot Summer Night and I Want To Walk Around With You mixtape. And rightly so, just wait until 1:58 into the song to understand why.

So this album will split audiences, but I definitely belong in the “I LOVE IT” camp. Although it’s only August, I can safely state that this will be near the top of my year-end-list, if not at the top. Enjoy!

TSURURADIO Presents… MIXTAPES WEEK: [ ...Living, Breathing, Dying... ] by nelso!!!

Oh my, what a week we’ve had so far, eh?  Honestly, I didn’t know if I’d be able to keep MIXTAPES WEEK going all week!  So many hyperlinks… so little time!  But alas, here we are, Friday, and we’ve got yet another amazing mixtape to share with you.  Also, waiting in the wings for my Crane Buddy to receive her Crane’s Day gift is the mixtape I made for her!  It’s a doozy that I plan on sharing with you ASAP, but she gets dibs on listening first, sorry — wouldn’t be all that special if I let you go before her, right?

Right.

Okay, as much as I hate to keep this short, it’s looking to be a nutty day today, it’s chilly outside, Baby’s sick, and dammit, I’m going to get a little lunchtime ride in to spin some ache out of my legs before a big (maybe 100 miler) ride tomorrow!   So, let’s get to the good stuff, eh?  And by good stuff, of course I’m talking about [...Living, Breathing, Dying...] by nelso!

“Ahh life is all about balance, this mix has balance, in tempo, up and down, its living, its breathing, and eventually dying…”  says nelso, so true, about life, about this mixtape, about damn near everything.  I will also add that life is about lines, it’s just one line after another sometimes, isn’t?  Line up at the stop light, line up in the lane on the interstate, line up at the exit, line up to park, line up for some coffee, line up to pay, line up to even leave!  Ugh.

Sorry, I digressed there, I really hate lines.

Fortunately, this mixtape is NOT about lines.  It’s at times whimsical, then fun, then slow & introspective, sometimes a interesting mix of all of the above, like “Whale In The Night” by Firs.  As nelso said, it ebbs, it flows, it’s up & down, as is all things, and it’s quite brilliant.  A wonderful conclusion to a rather ebb & flow kinda week if you ask me!  Thank you so much nelso! So what say you?  Shall we get ‘er on?   Yeah, I think so too.

PROJECT: In The Vinyl Rip Over the Sea!!!

February 27, 2010
By

Okay, my friends…. Do you love vinyl?  Do you have a record player???  Well, I’ve got a Project for you, for all of us.  My favourite thing about vinyl is that every single listening experience is different.  My record is different then your record, my turntable is different, my speakers, my needles, how I drop the needle, when I pick it up, how quickly I flip the record, etc, etc, etc makes every single listening experience unique.

If you listen to vinyl, you know all of this… But now it’s time to show the world.

The Project I propose to you, to everyone, is to take one of the greatest records of all time, Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and record your own vinyl experience.   No other album in recent memory has become as such a underground following and timelessness to it than this one and I couldn’t think of a better album for this project.

I don’t care how you do it, in a vaulted audiophile experience in super-Flac format, or with a shitty digital camera on video mode uploaded to youtube or something.  Play the record, record the record, and send it to me!  Let’s celebrate vinyl & share our experiences with this album with the world in what I’m calling…

PROJECT: In the Vinyl Rip Over The Sea!!!

To kick it off, I’ll re-present mine now as…

HURRY!  GO NOW!!!!

Cheers,

Tsuru
