Well looky looky here! We got ourselves a brand spankin’ new Belle & Sebastian album? Now, I’m not part of their community of fans and I don’t really follow music news all that much — whatever happened to that TV on the Radio band that ruled the indie-pitchfork-blog-world not to long ago?? — but I could’ve sworn these guys broke up or something?

*shrug*

(Ir)regardless, here we are in sunny 2010 and Belle & Sebastian are writing about lurrrrrrrrrrrve……..

pre order CD/LP via the Matador Store

I like B&S. Never been my favourite band of this “genre”, though ask me to name another band in the zone besides Camera Obscura and I’d probably fumble. To me, it always sounded like a hybrid of The Smiths with the happier-poppier side of REM and yeah, that’s a good thing.

Pretty much every song is chock full of energy & uber-pop goodness that has a big toe & two pinkies dipped in to the world of 8mm films and tape recorders that look more like this…

Than like this…

That is to say, it’s pretty sweet.

The only odd duck is “Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John”, it’s a nice song, but seems to stick out like a sore thumb. Looking over at my iPod, it seems as though Nora Jones is the voice I’m hearing. Again, it’s nice, but just sounds like some retro-duet that probably would’ve sounded better on a Jones album than the B&S LP.

But still…. wonderful little album and a pretty sweet way to wrap up this week! 4 wheelies!!!

TsuruBride Presents… SQUEE! It’s TWEE!!!

What is twee?

Since the beginning of the dawn of man, this question seems to exist at the very core of our being… I asked the Super Desserts during my interview, and the standard mentions of cutesy music and not-so-cutesy lyrics came up, but really what is cutesy? Is THIS twee?

What about this?

*shrug*

But really, this is really not about “twee”, it’s about all genres.  We hear what we hear, we feel what we feel, and none of that is wrong because in music, as hard as we try & try as we might, there are no hard definitions to any of it.

Hell, try as we might, no two G-chords are alike!

And with that…. I’ve got a very special presentation today!  The unimitatable TsuruBride has built us a new mixtape!  It’s a rare and special occasion when Baby curates a sweet little collection of tunes to grace our ears & hearts.  Last time, it was her wonderful book-themed gem called Bibliomania, one that smacked every book lover right in the face with it’s awesomeness.

Since then, Baby’s been collecting favourite songs, reorging the tracks, and putting together a CD’s worth of songs that are just as sweet & cute & adorable & awesome as she is called SQUEE! It’s TWEE!!! Now, are all these songs actually “twee”?  Don’t know, don’t care, because all I know is that when I see her dancing around to “Energy” by Apples In Stereo, when I see her singing along to “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me” by The Pipettes, I beam with a ridiculous smiles & fall that much more in love with her.  And THAT, my friends, is about as disgustingly twee as it gets!

Enjoy everyone! Have a wonderful weekend, go ride yer bikes, go listen to your records, and generally, just go have some fun!  Stay tuned on Monday for another special presentation accompanied by the story — a tragic love story? — between Sprint & me! But, until then…

Tsuru (and the Bride)!

Is it the end of music blogging as we know it? And TsuruBride Presents… Bibliomania!!!

May 4, 2010
By

Well, my friends… The end of music bloggerin’ as you & I know it may be ending soon.

It’s true.

You see, over in Ireland, there’s a group called IMRO that is basically a union for music artists that have decided it would be a good thing to force music bloggers who host music on their site to pay licensing fees to “play” the music on the site if it’s available in Ireland (of course it’s available in Ireland, as far as I know, none of block any countries).

Though initially they are targeting Irish bloggers, like Nialler9, The Torture Garden, and Asleep On A Compost Heap, they’ve made it clear, they will require every blog that is accessible to Ireland to pay up, even if they don’t “play” Irish bands.  It’s a very strange thing and, if they succeed, opens up a terrible precedent.  If bloggers pay up to Ireland, what’s to stop the ASCAP, SOCAN or PRS from doing the same thing?

I make 0, that’s a big fat Z-E-R-O, dollars on this site (it’s actually a money-losing endeavour with server fees and what not).  If suddenly I’m forced to pay licensing in Ireland and then the States and whatever other country decides they want in, well, yeah, no…. Ain’t happening.  Me & probably every other blogger you know will do one of 3 things.

1.  Stop the music.  Maybe embed some licensed stream or maybe a legal 30 second clip (Mmm…. 12 minute prog songs summed up in 30 secs?  Awesome-o) but that’d be it.  Sounds exciting, eh? In this world of portability, where you listen to the music pretty much everywhere BUT attached to your computer, embed onlys are pretty limp.

2. Go rogue & underground, ala PirateBay or whatever.  Host the site through some secret country, anonymously, etc, and hope they never find you.  Exciting. Personally though, bloggerin’ ain’t worth going to the pokey for…

3.  Quit. It’s already a scary place with Blogger shutting people down, DMCA notices to twitter, and crazy shit.  Now paying up? Nope!

I’m too old to “go rogue”, so I’d probably go to 30 sec embeds or, if it’s allowed, Soundcloud or something…. OR just say “fuck this”.

Nialler9 wrote a wonderful article with tons of details here. For more info, The Guardian also has an article & Shane at The Torture Garden has now written on it a couple times.  Basically it all comes down to the same thing.  Blogs, love them or hate them, are a part of the music industry now, we are part of “getting the word out” and getting bands the press they may or may not get other wise.

What’s funny, sad, etc, is that alot of these blogs, me included, are inundated with emails from labels, bands, PR people, etc asking us to listen & share their music, for FREE!  Listen to this, post this, please!  This includes bands covered by the IMRO.  Talk about a mixed message, eh?

So… what if this passes through and the bloggers that keep on bloggerin’ pay up, then the next one wants money, then the next. At some point, you won’t be left with much except the rich “opinion makers” which is why so many people turned to blogs in the first place!  Because the opinion of the few is too often, well, crap.

Go to Nialler’s write up, follow up, learn what you can do, write the IMRO, make yourself heard. Basically, give this proposal a BIG. FAT.

Okay, before we call this a day, let’s get some music going, eh?  And man I’ve got a GEM & special treat for you!!!  The unimitatable TsuruBride has made a rare and elusive mixtape!!!  This one was made for Crane’s Day down in the Society for her Crane Buddy and now that everyone’s got their Crane’s Day gifts, I can finally share this with you!!!  It’s called Bibliomania and given Baby’s penchant for readin’, I’ll give you oooone liiiittle gueeeess on the theme.

It’s books.

Man… really? I had to tell you that?  Oh my.  20 gems blatantly and not-so-blatantly about books, reading, and/or adorable librarians!  HOT!  So let’s do this, okay?  Let’s keep the music going, let’s keep the “blogosphere” going, let’s keep, not just my voice, but really everyone’s voices heard, and let’s get our mixtape on as……

TSURURADIO Community Presents… AdventurerNeil’s Bring Out Your Dead! (heart) Compilation!!!

February 14, 2010
By

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day.  Now, Baby & I don’t celebrate it, not for any particular reason, I guess with her birthday, our anniversary, and the holidays JUST passing, we don’t feel the need to go out and buy each other another gift.  Rather save the money for a little vacation action this year!  But, alot of people DO celebrate and maybe tougher, a lot people EXPECT some kind of celebration.  Want to hear a sad one? Yesterday on my rollcycling Twitter, someone in the cycling world gleefully tweeted how all his wife wants for Valentine’s Day is for him to do the dishes, no presents, just that.

Let me ask you.  How awesome of a partner can you be, when all she wants, is just for this one day, that you get off your ass and give her a hand.  Wow. Sad thing is… how many people DO wait til a holiday, say Valentine’s or Mother’s Day before they “do something”?  Dude. Turn off the TV and go do the fucking dishes.

*sigh*

Well… that’s just one component of these awesome-O “holidays”  The others can be worse.  Why is being “alone on Valentine’s day” and worse than being alone on any other day?  Why Valentine’s day to propose?  Why not your own special day? I don’t know man.

Fortunately for you and me, we got AdventurerNeil, his letter, and an amazing compilation to help get us all through this holiest of holy days…  Go on, Neil, TESTIFY!!!

Dear Aaron,

Why oh why do relationships come with absolutely miserable expiration dates like Nov 1, or Dec 25, or some other depressing wintery time? I don’t know. I think that the cold scares love away, and for that, I will never forgive it.

Have you ever noticed how relationships (and major moments in them) can come to be defined simply by a song or two? Further, I believe music is the way we come to love and accept all of the small moments in between. A number of the songs on this compilation were introduced to me by females who would later break my heart. I’d stop giving my heart away so freely… really, I would… but it seems to me that to do so is to DIE a little on the inside. And I’m alive to LIVE, goddammit!

This is a true romantic’s compilation, meant for the dreamers, sent for the feint of heart. And the lyrics… damn! Could they be any more fitting? I tried to make it 3 things: personal, timely, and timeless. If the music doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, you may want to see a cardiologist for a new set of strings.

One of the things I like about sad songs is that they are kind of trump cards. Not that this actually happened, but let’s say I play “Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken” by Camera Obscura at the start of a game. She plays, oh, for example, “For Today” by Jessica Lea Mayfield. Blamo! Check mate! She wins all the pogs, sinks my battleship, etc. Or as the Avett Brothers might say… “But if love is a game, girl, then you’re gonna win. I’ll spend the rest of my life bringing victory in!”

You may ask why would I make such an exhaustive mix of painful emotional shit. Well, have you ever subconsciously resisted something? Then you know how it can grow and grow. I’ve noticed myself doing that with sad songs recently… tucking them away, fearing their power. The emotional skeletons in our closets can literally become the elephants in the room (how’s that for a mixed metaphor?). It is with great cathartic joy, then, that I bring out my dead! (heart) and present you with a compilation of songs that are beautiful, sad, and not easy to confront at all. Every sadness needs its catharsis – catharsis is truth. And the truth, my friend, will set you free.

Merry Fuckin’ Corporate Love Day,
AdventurerNeil

PS. If a lot of these look familiar, it’s because I’ve been listening to TSRURURADIO pretty much non-stop… I tried to avoid too many repetitions of already loved Tsuru tracks, but some were un-pass-up-able. Thanks again for all that you do, and please keep up the awesome.

Note to Readers: I kept that in to be true to the letter, not for an ego boost.  But man, did my ego boost!

PPS. If you do host this, can you please introduce as: “AdventurerNeil’s Bring Out Your Dead! (heart) Compilation”.. thanks!

PPPS. READERS SHOULD NOTE that if they are depressed, bi-polar, suffering a recent heartbreak, having a miserable winter, etc., that they should SEEK HELP from friends/family/professionals, and not wallow in depressing music. I listen, I let myself feel. But I refuse to engage in extended wallowing, and so should everyone else! “It isn’t right to sit around and think about the awful things that get you down”
