TSURURADIO Presents… Intervention (7 Inch) on Vinyl!!!

Happy Labour Day, Amorica! What is Labour Day? I have no idea, but I got the day off, and well, that’s good enough for me. This much I do know, you now allowed or not allowed to wear white or something. But, maybe more important, Summer is nearing an end. It’s my least favourite season, as it’s the hottest. As a native Floridian (slogan: Canada’s winter wonderland!), I had 31 years of heat & humidity, so… yeah, I don’t miss it. Bring on Autumn! Bring on cooler weather! Bring on the leaves changing (for all my Floridian brothers & sisters I left behind, you haven’t lived until you seen the leaves change)!

Anywho, what’s that got to do with today’s special little share? Absolutely nothing. Picked this up in Montreal (appropriately enough) and figured since the weekend is long, let’s bring some extra vinyl on (and hey, that kinda ryhmes)! We also have come full circle… how so, you ask? “Intervention” was our very first song we shared, say it with me now, “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww”…

This is my favourite Arcade Fire song, plain & simple. The massive organ (hahaha), backed with a simple guitar melody, that just builds & builds in intensity & emotion. It’s backed with “Ocean Of Noise (Performed by Calexico)”, which is a beautiful take on a beautiful song. It’s win-win. So grab & enjoy as…

TSURURADIO Presents… Intervention 7 Inch on Vinyl!!!

A Side – Intervention
B Side – Ocean Of Noise (Performed By Calexico)

So much more vinyl (and non-vinyl), more than you can shake a stick at, right here….

Go show Arcade Fire all you love here, here, and here now!

Don’t you just love three-day weekends? Did a really nice 40 mile ride yesterday, a loner (with my new USF jersey… ahhhh yeah, boy-e! (that’s my college, but more importantly, it matches my bike, haha!)), and found myself over the 500 mile mark for August. Not bad, eh? That’s with the break last weekend when we went to Montreal and there’s still today to go (baby & I should be hitting the bike path a little later, assuming she as time… she’s rather busy making product for her two upcoming shows (I’m SO proud of you baby!)…

If the good lards a-willin’, September should feature the Tsururadio Tsycling Tsentury™ and some pretty fun/intense/awesome/miserable rides with some good friends (as well as the commuting), so let’s see if we can beat August. WOOT! Oh…. it’s on.

But that is neither here, but it is there. As for “here”, we gots a very special treat, indeed. I’ve always liked Talking Heads, ever since hearing “Burning Down The House” on the radio (and immediately buying the 45rpm single, yeah…. I’m old). Their genre-shifting eccentricities appealed to my very core (I’m an odd boy). No, they never quite hit “favourite band” status (those damn Violent Femmes swooped in, and with their genre-shifting eccentricities that often focused on sex & religion, I was eternally smitten), but they did hold a special place in my kooky little heart.

One of my favourite songs has been “Road To Nowhere”, from it’s choir intro, to it’s doo do-do-doo do-do-doo do-do-doo bass line, to the fantastic video (holy crap, check out the guy in the yellow shorts & beard at the very beginning singing in the choir…. an indie-hipster! Looks straight out of an American Apparel catalogue! ha!), it’s just perfect. The first time I had heard the song, I was knee deep in the Femmes The Blind Leading The Naked (yeah, I know, I was late to Little Creatures, story of my life, eh?) but immediately snatched up the album and played the shit out of it (well, played the shit out of “Road To Nowhere”, the rest of the album got some great air time too, but I has ta be honest wif ya!)

So, as always, it was with MUCH joy while galavanting through Montreal that I found Little Creatures for a two twonies and a loonie and swooped it up! Listening this weekend, I realized how much I under-appreciated the rest of the album (though I’m still goo-goo for the finale), but I’ll chalk it up to youthful ignorance. It’s stripped down (well, as stripped down as Talking Heads could be, I s’pose) Talking Heads. It’s a bit more pop on the surface, but tune your ears a bit, and you’ll hear the layers, the world that Byrne brings to everything he does. Fantastic.

I think I need to keep my eyes out for some more Talking Heads next time I’m out and about. Honestly, I don’t see how my collection will ever be complete without them. But that’s not here…. that’s there (full circle, eh?). Let’s hit the good times, shall we, as…

Next up, another member vinyl rip, this time another by sonicjamesdean and it’s a beaut… Sonic Youth’s Sonic Nurse!!! Now, we featured a Sonic Youth vinyl rip before when we presented Daydream Nation, and I’m constantly amazed. This is another one of those bands that should be lauded, not only for their longevity of their existence in these days of the on-going commoditization (I think I just made that word up) of music, but also for the sheer quality of their output! Much like one of my mainstay loves REM, yet on a completely different musical point of view. Sonic Youth is a love or hate band, the addition of noise and the lack of an easy-peasy melody will do that to a band. Sonic Nurse will not win Sonic Youth many any new fans, but for those of you who can’t get enough, Sonic Nurse, especially on it’s natural vinyl state, is a joy to immerse yourself in, to listen, to try to catch ever little nuance these guys laid down for us… Amazing.

So thank you sonicjamesdean! Alright let’s bring the good times as…

TSURURADIO Presents…. 7 Songs on Vinyl!!!

Let’s change gears for a sec, an album you might not realize I’d even like. This may be a surprise to you, but there was a time when I was letting out all kinds of aggression back in ’90 or ’91 or something when I finally came across this classic.

You see… I had a few hardcore friends back then in the late 80′s / early 90′s, in that whole 7 seconds / Minor Threat scene, all super-straight-edge and into mosh pits and hating people who drink beer. Good times… One of them, my friend Matt, who was part of all that joined a group of hardcore hari krishnas down in Tampa (seriously). One night he invited me over for vegetarian chili at their local meeting house…. needless to say, it was rather surreal to see a group of hardcore punks chanting “hari krishna hari krishna krishna krishna hari hari” over and over again, eating (yummy) chili, before loading up some Minor Threat (or was it 7 seconds?) and starting a mosh pit in the living room with big ol’ X’s sharpied on their fists. I left that night thankful for the experience, thankful for the free food (I was pretty broke back then, free food is always a good thing), and thankful for not breaking an arm on the coffee table.

That’s about it for my “hardcore” experience. It wasn’t for another year or two later before 13 Songs made it’s way into my ears. I didn’t really know the connection between Fugazi and Minor Threat at the time, but I did know I had a pretty special album playing in my tape deck, yeah… tape deck. For the few of you not in the know, Fugazi took hardcore into something much deeper, incorporating elements of more melodic genres, like funk, soul, reggae, and good ol’ rock into something brand-spanking-new to me. Pretty amazing stuff…

It was much to my glee that I saw 7 Songs (though I wished for 13) all new and in 180g vinyl. Listening now really takes me back a few… Anyways, enough memory lane, let’s get our Fugazi & our pissed-off faces on, and let’s get ready to get some agression off our chest as…

After yesterday’s long-winded post pimping out my wife, her craft show, her craftin’ cohorts, and my little “Tsentury“, figured we’d keep it short and sweet today (and to think, when this site first started, all we posted were lyrics)…. As we have another amazing vinyl rip to share from one of our incredible members and I don’t want to take anything away from it with my jibber-jabbering!

You are in luck too, as it’s a “gud rip”, so you know it’s of the highest of quality. This time around he brought us Real Gone by Tom Waits, a double LP of Waits redefining Waits once again. After god knows how many years, we see him drop the piano in favor of using, well, actually, it sounds like nearly any instrument and non-instrument he had laying around to create a rythym-focused carnival side-show of gritty and grungy genious! Yep, that about sums it up. So, I’ll shut up and you guys go grab, listen, and enjoy as…

What a beautiful weekend. Perfect weather surrounded by little fluffy clouds, just wonderful. And man, I took advantage of it! Ended up doing about 70 miles on the bike over the weekend. My Kona performed like a dream. My lovely wife (the incomparable TsuruBride) & I did about 20 on Saturday after I did a few photoshoots, then I did about 40 on Sunday morning with a group, then Sunday evening (before a yummy steak dinner) my lovely and I took off or a quick ten down to German Village through downtown. Windy as hell, which made it more fun/tough. All and all… good times!

So, here’s what I’m thinking is next, or nearly next a…

Tsuru Tsentury™

That’s right, trademarked, tsururadio.com, 2008! lol. Yep, I’m aching to do 100 miles. From my house in the Short North area here in Columbus (O-H, uh, I-O), up and over to Westerville to a friend’s house, then out and over to Grandville to a farmer’s market for a half-way break with fresh breads and stuff, then back to Westerville for a final bottle refill, and finally back to my house. What do you think? Sounds awesomely miserable (or miserably awesome), eh?

Catchy name too, “Tsuru Tsentury”… Aren’t I shmart & clever? Anyways, I’ll let you know (and who knows… maybe you want in? Just write me) it won’t be the last time I do them (unless I die from exhaustion, then just tell my wife & kids I love them), but in all honesty, I’m a bit nervous for my first.

And as for a seque into today’s feature, well….. I got nothing. Spent it all on that whole “tsentury” thing. But, one of our newest participating members over in the Society, “sonicjamesdean” has already brought the vinyl goods and well, it’s such a classic, and such a turn for Dylan, that it inspired me to get it out here for all you folks ASA & P. Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline marked a turn in Dylan’s sound, a foray into modern (well, 1969 modern) country and the results (at least when view with these ears in 2008) are nothing less than subliiiiime. One of the most startling things you’ll notice is his voice, or the lack of “his voice”, meaning that whine is decidedly not there, instead we have a country crooner, sure to have tweaked few die-hards back then (and apparently, he had quite a few too many then, ah, thank you wikipedia), but I find perfectly appropriate. We even got a little Cash on the lead-off track, “Girl From The North Country”.

If you want “a complete un-knOWn! like a rOLling stOne”, well, this ain’t for you… but if you can appreciate some oldie country (Silver Fox anyone? or is he too “seventies”?), some Dylan, and some nice & crunchy snap, crackle, and pop of an old record, well then, this is right up your alley. So, get ready to get your swagger on as…

TSURURADIO Presents… London Calling on Vinyl!!!

Sorry for the slight delay for our next vinyl rip, I didn’t forget you. We had special family in town all month and when she left on Sunday, it was not an easy time. So, after a bit of moping, I met up with a friend to knock out 63 miles on the bike. Man o’ man, up and out of Columbus, into god-knows-where Delaware (lots of corn fields). Wore my ass out (he’s hardcore, which really pushed me), got a lovely sunburn that added to my overall exhaustion. Another awesomely miserable and miserably awesome good times on the bike.

I think it may be time to start looking at a real road bike. I want to go longer & faster, I want to traverse 100 miles, 200 miles, etc…. and a 25 lb single speed just isn’t the way to do it. One things certain though…. I’m addicted. I even wore cycling clothes yesterday (eek, I know).

Now, you may be wondering why I’m jibbering on about cycling when presenting such an iconic album as The Clash’s London Calling on Vinyl? Well, exactly for that reason…. it’s iconic. If you don’t know it, the vinyl rip is the perfect way to discover it, if you do, then you really do. Simply an amazing album, influential, and on lord knows how many people’s top ten albums of all time list.

*** WARNING ***

This is an old record, original pressing, and had a, what I can only describe as a “nugget of vinyl” at the end of “Revolution Rock”. I left it in the zip and it’s the mp3′s here. There was nothing I could do about it. So, hopefully it won’t ruin the experience. It is what it is, you are hearing the album just as I did last night.

Anyways, time to get busy at work. Man, I hate Mondays. But, this should certainly help make it go smoothly as…

Oh wait! Almost forgot! She & Him are in Columbus tonight… if you are going, see you there! Hope to score some good swag to give away in our beloved society!

TSURURADIO Presents… ABBA Greatest Hits on Vinyl!!!

So one of my Canuck in-laws is actually Swedish… AAAND for the past year, I’ve been light-heartedly teasing him about Swedens lack of musical imports (though I was always kidding, it was fun, a fake rivalry of sorts, though, oddly, I tend to defend Canada’s music, not the states. I’m not a very good patriot). “ABBA, you Swedes always fall back to ABBA, that’s all ya got! HA!”

Now, I’m no ABBA freak, though I seem to know all the songs… I learned that this weekend when la familia headed out to the movies to watch Mamma Mia! (on Saturday, and Dark Knight today) and I felt myself singing along in my head as Meryl Streep sang, “Mamma Mia, here we go again, my my, how can I resist ya!” Good times. Yeah, the movie lacks certain key things, like a consistent plot, but the actors (Pierce Bronson singing ABBA is worth the money right there) are having so much fun, you kinda get caught up in it, bobbing your head and smiling like a doofus. My youngest also really enjoyed it (she’s actually singing ABBA right now while she works on building an outfit for her dog with TsuruBride).

Going back to my in-laws… My birthday rolled around in May and for a perfectly perfect present, they gave me their old ABBA record collection, 3 albums and a greatest hits (the Atlantic one). It seemed extraordinarily fitting to give the greatest hits a rip, but what ABBA listening session would be complete without listening to “Dancing Queen”? None, I say! So, I popped on Arrival and ripped that one too! How one can listen to ABBA without wanting to dance around your room like an idiot is beyond me…. So, let’s close out the weekend (another wonderful one, thanks baby, and thanks Canadian maw-maw and paw-paw for the wonderful birthday present!!) with some wonderful Swedish bubble gum with extra snap, crackle, and pop, shall we? As…

TSURURADIO Presents… Peter Gabriel aka Peter Gabriel’s 4th Eponymously Titled Album aka Security aka Scary Distorted Blue Demon Face on Vinyl!!!

Yay! More $1 vinyl!!! And man, another masterpiece…. who the hell’s dumping these used gems (no matter how raggy the album cover’s getting) back into circulation? Oh well, their lost, or more likely, there $0.50 is my gain! Today we feature one of my favorite artists from way back, my whack-a-doodle man Peter Gabriel and his 4th solo album, called many things to many people, but most commonly known as Security.

I think Ground & Sky at progreviews.com (where I got that whole “Scary Distorted Blue Demon Face” title from) said it best, “Gabriel was truly taking his music increasingly off the beaten track. While Security may sound quaintly proto-world-pop-crossover by today’s standards, most pop artists in 1982 weren’t importing drummers from Ghana to help convey images of Carl Jung pulling a Lord of the Flies somewhere in the African desert. Though I think Sting was trying to impress us by writing lyrics in French…”

ha!

This is definitely his darkest release, incorporating unsettling themes with polyrhythms and nary a cymbal in site! I was a big fan of all his solo works, especially #3 (Melty Face, as I called it) as it had “Games Without Frontiers” (introducing me to Kate Bush) and, of course, “Biko” but that was a little later on in my life, it was when I was about 9 or 10 when I first saw “Shock The Monkey” on MTV. I was fascinated. A couple years later, I was still belting out my best falsetto singing “SHO-OCK Da Mun-keh!” in my room…

Ah memories… I’ll tell ya, for $1 vinyl, it sounds great! Yeah, there’s plenty of snap, crackle, and pop, and the very beginning has about 4 pops that were probably almost a skip, but they go away quickly and let you settle in proper into “Rhythm Of The Heat”. Man, relistening now, such an amazing album. Just be warned… don’t listen on head phones in the dark, Ooooooo! lol. Anyway, enjoy as…

1 Rhythm Of The Heat

2 Lay Your Hands On Me
3 Wallflower

Vinyl Week Concludes with a very special Members Only Vinyl Rip #10!!!

Photography “The Way The Good Lard Intended…” by Tsuru

Well, this about wraps up vinyl week… I hope you enjoyed all the vinyl goodness and good times shared. Picked up a few more records this weekend, so don’t worry, plenty more to come. But for now, to bid this week adieu, I figured we share something very, very special & new, just got this record in the mail the other day. Can’t say (considering it’s one of the best albums of 2008) I’m THAT impressed with the quality of vinyl. Ripped it 2 different ways and it’s still a noisy bastard. Ah, well, maybe one of you can do a better rip and share it with our ragamuffin vinyl society…. In the mean time, go on in and grab this beauty and all the other gems posted (vinyl and regular good ol’ digital), but, like I said, it’s for members only so…

GO JOIN NOW!!!
(But like I always say, don’t just take, participate!)

Tell you what, I’ll give you a hint for Members-only #10… Check out the fan-made video below.

;)

Peace, love, and LPs,

Tsuru

P.S. Lots of new music coming your way this week (of course), see ya then!
