The Flaming Lips – Borderline (Madonna)

When I heard about this on Record Store Day, I was intrigued and excited… I mean, just look at the math: iconic pop star song + quirky alternative rockers = superawesomegoodtimes. Well, superawesomegoodtimes in the traditional sense it ain’t. Instead you have a slow burner, starts of teeny tiny, with a little Casio-like rhythm thing going on and some quite effects. But then slowly, every so slowly, it builds until the half-way mark where the Casio is turned up to 10 and played to the full effect why Wayne sings from the Star Trek….. Enterprise. Finally, the rest of the team wakes up and we get some guitars and drums and an all-around epic attempt, which is all well and good until I remember it’s just a Madonna song, and not one of her better ones, imo.

You want to cover Madonna? This….. THIS is the song to do:

GO GET HER BLACK JESUS!!!

Man, I’m a sucker for a gospel choir………

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

Enjoy the new mixtape? Good… got more coming soon! But first, how about another tsuruloosie, this time Deerhunter’s “Rainwater Cassette Exchange”. Okay, first off I’m disappointed this isn’t a cassette rip of a cassette-only release, because honestly, that would be pretty sweet, all hissy and shit. Anyways, I like this song. It’s pretty easy peasy on the surface, but caked in layers of sounds and very interesting harmonies. Sounds a bit transitional, like it’s between something pretty “epic”. Definitely would’ve made a nice add to the mixtape… Strange, after about 5 times through, that’s all I got to say about it. Hmmm…..

The Dirty Projectors – No Intention

Nice little rainy Monday, so let’s start things off with a little tsuruloosie, eh? “No Intention” by the Dirty Projectors…. Okay, this is pretty sweet and smooth. Got a simple rhythm & melody, easy peasy, and you just glide along, slowly clapping your hands, rocking side to side. Not sure why, but I’m vaguely reminded of Prince? Weird… though I have no idea which Prince, but whatever, it’s what’s coming to my head, so it’s what gets written here. Nice one you Dirty Projectors, I wasn’t too impressed with your addition to the Dark Was The Night compilation, I guess my prejudice took over because I then avoided your album. Sorry ’bout that… looks like I need to go check it out after all… ;)

The Streets – I Love My Phone

Okay, saw that a new Streets song was floating around that had been released or had something to do with Twitter, don’t ask me what, because 1) don’t know & 2) most likely don’t care because all that matters is that the music, regardless of what form of networking was chosen to release it is now out and about. Now, I’ll be honest with you (expect nothing less, okay?), my familiarity with The Streets is pretty much exclusive to that song that goes “dry your eyes mate…” BUT, with the invention of the tsuruloosie, I no longer need to wait for an album to (maybe) download, stick in the queue, eventually get to, and maybe enjoy. Nope, I am now free to grab a single song by lard knows who from lard knows where and give it a metaphorical spin! WHEE!

Freedooooom!!! You got ta give-a whatcha taaaaake!

So, the song… Since it’s called “I Love My Phone”, I can only assume he has an iPhone, though I can’t tell if that’s what he’s rappin’ about (maybe it’s a Nokia, maybe that’s why he doesn’t say which implicitly?). The rhythm goes bop-bop-bop… bop-bop-bop, and you got one of those high-pitched repeating voices in the background while he jibbers on about pin numbers and what not until some guys overly sings “I frown inside”, I think, and there’s something about trousers and linings? Since rap is so much about the “rap”, after 5 or 6 listens trying to catch what he’s a rappin’ about, I kinda called it quits. Musically, the song really goes no where and rappin’ about some gadget that will probably be in a junkyard one day, not much of a connection for me.

Sorry Mr. Streets, not my cup o’ tea but that’s just me, I’m sure plenty of our readers love you and now love your new song! Good luck with the song and I imagine your new album, I think you got lots of fans who I’m sure will be eagerly waiting for your next tweeted twack, er, I mean track! Oh, and thanks for giving me a good excuse to post that George Michael video! Now sing it with me….

FREEEDOOOOOMM! OH FREEEDOOM! MY FREEDOOOOM!!! YOU GOTTA GIVE-A WHATCHA GIVE-A WHATCHA GIVE! YOU GOTCHA WHATCHA WANT FROM ME! THAT’S THE WAY IT’S GOT TUH BEEE! YEAH!

Wheee!!!

Patrick Wolf – Hard Times

Ah, fresh songage from Patrick Wolf! Very excited for the new album to “drop”, discovered him surprisingly recently in our Basement Required Listening series down in the Society. For now though, we just have “Hard Times” and a Vulture EP floating around. So how does “Hard Times” fair? I don’t know…. Starts off with a play on left & right earphone noises, then plods into a driving violin-enhanced melody, until we finally fall into a pretty nice chorus, but I can’t quite make up my mind on this one.

Often in life, you can sum up how you feel about things with 3 simple choices, you can either fuck, kill, or marry it. Basically, when this song starts out, I kinda wanna kill it, but then at the chorus I’m ready to give it some lovins, but come the finale, I’m all wanting to marry this bastard! Oh man, it starts over and I go through the same emotions again!

What to do? What to do? I know! Let’s have a poll….. Give it a listen or two or three, then make your voice be known!

Sunset Rubdown – Idiot Heart

This one comes by way of redhousepainter down in the Society by way of the pitchforkers, the latest tune from Sunset Rubdown from their upcoming album Dragonslayer called “Idiot Heart”! See, this is the beauty of the tsuruloosie, gives me a chance to legitimately share a song from an album that’s not on the intertubes yet! “Idiot Heart” picks up with “Courtesan Has Sung” left off, but then builds a bit more on the guitar (did someone go out and buy a sweet V-shaped axe?). Overall, a very nice evolution of their sound! Anywho, sounds fucking fantastic, can’t WAIT for Dragonslayer. Looks like all my favourite artists are vyeing for the top spot on this year’s Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums list!

U2 – Get On Your Boots (Justice Remix)

So, this has been a super-hyped-blogged song for what seems like forever now. I don’t really care for U2 that much or Justice (the band, not the kid’s store), but my curiosity got the best of me and I had to check it out. Honestly…. I don’t get it. I mean, sure, it’s fine, got a little beat and some quirky little special effects, even a bouncy little piano, but Bono’s voice sounds higher pitched or something, and the song really doesn’t really go anywhere or do anything. I guess if I was “at da club” and “in da groove” I’d keep on truggin’ along in hopes of a more interesting song to follow, but otherwise, meh. So, if I was to give this an official rating, I’d give it one big “shrug”. Sorry U2, sorry Justice, if I ever do another TSURUREMIX, I’m afraid I’ll be leaving this one off…

fun. – At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)

Just found out I’m stuck at work for a few more minutes, so let’s do another tsuruloosie, eh? This one by ex-Format (I know, they broke up… sucks) band called fun. Well, don’t worry, it still sounds unbelievably Format-esque (yay!), but also a bit different. Love the female counter-vocal & little blips and bleeps added, very nice touch, and good news… the fun theatrics are still there, which is what I LOVED about Dog Problems. The only negative? The finale sounds a bit too much like Format. It’s hard to hear it and not think of “can we please take a moment, and talk about me!” from “Matches” (I think). Anyways, very excited to hear what else fun. has in store for us! The Format is dead, long live The Format!

The return of the tsuruloosies…

If there is one thing I learned putting together our MASSIVE 3.3 hours, 38 song, from womb to now mixtape of kickin’ favourites from every stinking possible year of my life is that I’m getting old. Yep, it’s true. Little by little, one grey hair, one fresh wrinkle at a time. Sure, I know what you are thinking, “Tsuru, that can’t be so, you is one fine lookin’ man, tried & true! If it weren’t for that TsuruBride, I’d be all over you like white on rice (or even yellow on a delicious saffron chicken & yellow rice)! Mmm-mmm….”

Well, that’s very sweet of you and yes for a man approaching 36 next month, I’m a pretty hot piece o’ ass. BUT, that doesn’t change the fact that time moves forward and I’m slowly but surely dying (hopefully reeeeally slowly). Don’t cry though! There are many aspects of one’s life where one can, not reverse the aging process, but at least be fresh & current & “in the present”…. Of course, I’m talking about music.

I’m not really “current” in the hot & hyped sense… I see an album, I try an album, if I like an album, I write about the album. Then I make mixtapes from those albums and buy the albums on records and share that listening experience with you, so…. who knows when that album will make it to my ears! Could be weeks, months, or even years!

So, in an effort to stay more “with it” and “down with the young-folk”, I think it’s time for the return of the tsuruloosies! First, a little lesson…. Webster’s defines the term (updated for 2009) as the following:

Term: tsuruloosies
Main entry: tsu·ru·loo·sies
Pronunciation: (sü-rü-lü-s?s)
Function: Noun
Etymology: From the urban slang loosie for a single cigarette or can of beer
Date: 2008
Definition: Individual songs leaked, released, or just fondly remembered, usually listened to seperately from the albums, mixtapes, podcasts, etc. from whence they came.

Last time, we emptied out a little pocket on my iPod of homeless songs, but going forward we’ll use this to actually review & discuss songs, preferably current ones, but possibly some old nuggets too (you know me, I’m a bit sentimental at times….. or maybe just mental, well, either way, good times). So, this weekend, I grabbed a couple random hot tracks and decided to give them a spin to see what all the fuss is about. Going forward, like our little video moments, I think these will just be little blips on little random tracks. Why not, right? More music = more possible good times to be had!

Crystal Antlers – Andrew

First up is Crystal Antlers with “Andrew”…. Hmm…. not too shabby. The voice is a bit harsh and like that first strum that opens the song, it just hits you in your ear drum and doesn’t want to let go. The song settles into a pretty classic melody, but the voice distracts more than enhances. But, if you are like that scratchy-yelling voice thingy, then get all over this one….

King Khan And The Shrines – Land Of The Freak

Let’s do another, eh? This time King Khan And The Shrines and “Land Of The Freak”. Hmm…. another “oldie” sounding song. Is this a trend now? I honestly can’t tell if I’m listening to some old record or not. But, it’s a hot track, so I have to assume this is fresh. It’s fun, that’s for sure, a bit of surf boogie good times or something. I wholly expect a bunch of very clean-cut white boys during the pre-but-so-close-to-the-hippie-age in high wasted swim trunks dancing clumsily on the beach near white girls in bikinis. Well, except for the sax freak-out, that’s classic Horns Of Dilemna action right there.

Superchunk – Misfits & Mistakes

Last one… Superchunk and “Misfits & Mistakes”. Isn’t Superchunk an old band too? Like some leftover from the 90′s? No? Oh well. Can’t remember, don’t feel like looking it up. Doesn’t matter anyway, it’s about the song, right? Starts off nice, little distorted guitar bouncing around with a driving bass. The verse is a bit generic, but we are soon back to the sweet little bouncing guitar. Chorus is pretty weak, basically the same as the verse, but he sings it different. This one doesn’t really do anything for. Maybe it’s a transition song? Oh well….

Well, there you go, three tsuruloosies… Phew. I don’t know about you, but I feel like a 22 year old hipster all over again! Like I can read Hipster Runoff and truly “get it”, you know? That was fun, let’s do it again real soon!

Term: tsuruloosies
Main entry: tsu·ru·loo·sies
Pronunciation: (sü-rü-lü-s?s)
Function: Noun
Etymology: From the urban slang loosie for a single cigarette or can of beer
Date: 2008

1. Individual favorite songs from an album that wasn’t obsessed over by Tsuru.

2. Songs from albums that have not leaked yet, but Tsuru has on mad repeat.
3. Songs randomly downloaded, such as b-sides or, for reasons often unknown, Tsuru didn’t grab the album.
4. Older songs that Tsuru remembers fondly for some god-forsaken reason, searches it out, and throws it on the ipod, listens to it 10 times, then immediately forgets about it.

…I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours! Seriously, Tsurubride said to list your tsuruloosies… hop to it, use those comments (I turned them on for a reason) or she’ll kick your ass!!!

She can be quite feisty at times… ;) Here’s some of mine (in ABC order), enjoy!

Adele – Daydreams
Basically, a less drug-addled Winehouse.

Arcade Fire – Maps (Studio Version)
Not sure where I got this, not even a fan of the original song.

Bright Eyes – Smoke Without Fire
From a sweet mixtape over at Peanut’s Playground a while back.

Cheap Trick – If You Want My Love
One of my favorite cheesetastic songs ever!

Concrete Blonde – Mexican Moon
The last song Concrete Blonde made that I liked.

Cracker – Eurotrash Girl
Best. Hidden. Track. Ever.

Hrsta – Beau Village
A gem from an album that’s been sitting on my ipod forever.

Islands – The Arm
Something new! Is that prog I hear?? Oh boy oh boy!

Jonathan Richman – New England
Happy sigh…

Mims featuring Purple Popcorn – This Is Why I’m Hot (Rock Mix)
Heard this at a Forever 21, remembered the chorus, did a lyric search, found the right version, bought it on itunes, burned it, ripped it to mp3, and now it’s yours. I really bad & fun rap/rock song.

Radiohead – Nude
Sacrilege, but, I never got into Radiohead, but there is usually a song or two on each album I like. I like this one.

She And Him – Why Do you Let Me Stay Here
One word on this album… it will be ADORABLE (and you know it)!

Social Distortion – Reach For The Sky
My favorite punk band (really, it’s hard country-based rock, but whatever)…

Sons And Daughters – The Nest
Couldn’t get into the new album, but dug this bad boy.

Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies – Christmas Time For Girls And Boys
Late? Or just really really really early?

The Flaming Lips – Be My Head
I have no idea where or when I got this.

The New Caledonia – Disco In Outer Space City
Mmm… prog-dance-rific!

NOTE: No post tomorrow afternoon, my dear friends. I know, I know… you are overwhelmed with all kinds of sadness. The Mrs and I are driving to Headliners down in Louisville, Kentucky tomorrow afternoon (leaving work early) to see, for the second time, the infamous and incomparable soul-funk stylings of Ms. Sharon Jones! Fuck yeah! I’ll try to do a concert review, but I may be too overwhelmed with the funk to take pictures or be able to write coherent sentences. Either way, I’ll still get a vinyl rip up this weekend…. why? Because I love you.

Aw…
