Not too long ago, we wrote an open letter to independent artists to delete their myspace pages. Now, every other week, we are going to wander along the best alternative out there, Bancamp and see what kind of adventures we can have at What I did at Bandcamp…
Howdy howdy mah free-ends! How you been? Our 2nd week as the paper crane collective was yet another success (even though we had a few computer glitches from a few authors along the way. Things to look forward to, two new additions will be added to the roster this weekend in the form of The Music Ninja & In Your Speakers! WOOHOO! Also, finally we’ll update the posting schedule. We got some rearrange-rearrangin’ to do. All-in-all though, not too shabs, eh?
anywhosaldoosals…….. Alright! Back to the reason for the season of the pleasin’ with the music digestin’!!! BAAAAAAAAANDCAMP, where all the lights are on, BAAAANDCAAAAMP, where all the bands are…. okay, lost the song. Fuck it. Let’s get to it! Here’s how this all went down. I went over to bandcamp.com, clicked a genre, and literally just started hopping around. Here’s what caught my eyes & ears.
First up, oddly, was some pretty non-English speaking indie. Not usually my wheel-house, only because, well, I loooove to sing along, but that album cover drew me in and there I was wishing I knew Spanish, well, more than the Mexican cuss words I have a tendency to say at all the wrong times. Just some sweet dreamy indie rock.
One word…… well two… INDIE-PROOOOOOOOOG! Nom nom nom nom. Up, down, left, down, right, up, right, up, right, doooown. Mmmm… Sure to be hated by most critics (tis the nature of all prog, sorry boys), this is pretty fucking sweet. It’s all over the place and I love it!
Recorded live to her Garage program in a bedroom, all hissy background and all. This is quiet, lonely, slow, rainy, tender, and absolutely lovely.
I love Social Studies. Such a generic name for so many potential topics. I almost failed it once… for my handwriting. Yeah, I have bad handwriting. Anyways… Unlike that middle school class, nothing generic here. Nope, here we have a straight-forward female lead with a bit of cutesy electronic twee-type childish thingy going on, but wonderfully executed. And it’s adoooorable!
It might sound a bit twee at first, but for me it’s a bit more classic-folk-rock or something to me. A bit more quiet-solo-in-a-rock-opera to me. Listen to “A Chore Of Mine” and tell me you can’t see the lights fade, except for the spotlight on our lead as he’s about sing, alone, to you and me…..
Mentions & nods to shoegaze here, but I think it’s more pop with their eyes firmly pointing to their shoes than the other way around. Definitely a rainy sunday kinda thing. Definitely pretty bad ass. Definitely worth the listen…
Baby found this one for us. Listening to “The Forgetting Song” it’s kinda “yeah, no duh”. Lo-fi strumming, is that a xylophone? or one of those children’s xylophones? and some sweet lady vocals. Pretty simple. Pretty awesome. Oh my, love love the hum on “Run Forward, Look Back”. *love*
Okay. Confession to this one…. I didn’t just stumble on this one. I’ve had this one for a few weeks. Yeah, that’s my daughter. Amazing voice, eh? This is all her. Talk about proud of my babybird…………….
Okay, that’s it! Easy peasy, right? Not bad for just clicking through. It’s really amazing how much music is out there, how technology and the informational super highway of love canals has made it soooo easy for anyone to put some songs together and pop ’em on the web. With that comes lots of white noise and, maybe in some minds, so much crap. But that’s where the fun begins, wading through the crap to find your nuggets of gold, you know? What nuggets will you find?
Have a great weekend everyone! Go ride your bikes, go take lots of pictures, and, if the good lard’s a-willin’ and the creeks don’t rise, we’ll see you before long……..
