Hey kids! I’m pretty honored and excited to be part of this Paper Crane Collective and to share one of my favorite things that I’ve been doing over at my own site, dailybeatz. Are you familiar? If not, you should pay it a visit some time. [Spoiler – its not that cool really]
So what exactly is Hypem Hunting? Well, I’m pretty sure most of you are pretty familiar with The Hype Machine, right? A few months back, I was looking for this song I’d heard called “Blind”, so I went to the Hype Machine and searched for “blind” and found the song I was looking for and hit play. When my song finished, the next song started. It was a really awesome song that only one person had posted and that had zero hearts. I ended up posting the song as well, but if it were not for that search I did, I never would have found the song.
This brought me to think that if I just searched for other random words on the site, I could find lots of other awesome songs that I had never heard or even heard of, and just as I suspected, I was correct. So now I play this game once a week or so and share 4 of my favorite songs that I find. These have now become my favorite posts, mostly because the songs are usually really diverse and can span decades of music, so I’m thrilled to share some of these posts with you as my contribution to this collective.
Just to make things slightly more interactive (for one person at least) and because it’s difficult to pick a word out of any word ever each week, lately I’ve been turning to twitter and using the first response I get. And it just so happens that this week’s first responder was fellow PCC member Pooch from This Bonus Track, who suggested the word “Run”. And a good suggestion it was. Here are the awesome tunes that I found.
First up is a beautiful acoustic little number from Daughter, who is Londoner Elena Tonra. Her voice is pure and smooth as are her melodies. I’m not usually a big fan of these acoustic guitar numbers really but this one is legit for some reason. Maybe it’s her Kate Nash-esque voice or just her British accent in general. Either way, it’s a great tune from a great unsigned artist. You can download her whole EP for free right over here.
Perhaps the greatest part of this little experiment that I try to do once a week is that I almost always find some super awesome really old tune, and this week is no exception. This tune is from Denise LaSalle’s 1972 album Trapped By a Thing Called Love and it’s some pretty legit Motown/Soul. I dig it. You dig it?
This next one is such a killer rock song. It starts out completely slow and unassuming and then it gets kind of dark and heavy, and then just over halfway through, it kicks into overtime and the guys totally rock out the rest of the tune. It’s from French band The Bankees, one that I will definitely have to find out some more about. I want to listen to this song over and over again.
And finally, take a listen to this little ditty from SkyHiker. It’s one of those really pretty songs that grows bigger the whole way through and just sort of puts a smile on your face. The mood of this tune is almost inspirational, as is it’s title, “Run, Love, Fight”. Can’t think of a better way to end this post.
So, was it good for you? Let me know if you want to bathe in this segment or if you’ve had enough. You can hit me up at chris at dailybeatz dot com, or on the twitter @dailybeatz. And here’s my crane. I call it “I’m not creative and bad at Photoshop”.
