Time for an album of which I know every single word by heart. Well, except for that gibberish in Caralho Voador perhaps. This is an album that dragged me through the dark times after high school, and number 3 in my series Forgotten Classics!
Faith No More – King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime (1995)
On King For A Day… Faith No More perfected their patented “Fuck you, you suck and we are fantastic”-attitude. And with ‘perfected’ I mean PERFECTED.
There isn’t a bad song among the 14, and even better, every single song has its own unique identity. Hard rocking (Get Out, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, Ugly In The Morning), soultripping (Evidence), jazzynova (Star A.D., Cuckoo for Caca), poppy (Ricochet, King For A Day), pastich cliché (Take This Bottle, Just A Man), it’s all here.
And furthermore, I’m betting you have never heard any band ever take the piss more than FNM on this album! Some sample lyrics:
I deserve a reward
’cause I’m the best fuck that you ever had
and if I tighten up my hole –
you may never see the light again
– The Gentle Art Of Making Enemies
Sky is clear tonight
Sky is clear tomorrow
A star is out
I reach for one to sparkle in my hand
A star is out
I will not touch you, I am just a man
– Just A Man
Well whatever. You had to be there. Or something. Just listen, you’ll know what I mean. Also notice the ‘loud-soft-loud-soft-loud’ sequence the songs have. Cool.
