I’m pooped! Tired legs, a bit of chest congestion…. over-riding & allergies? or getting sick? Blah! Got to HTFU (harden the fuck up), got to man up, got to toughen up, we got a Vinyl Mixtape Battle Royale with The Needle Drop on Friday and I need to be in my BEST FORM to accept the yellow jersey!
Anthony actually called me yesterday, recording the call from what I understand for his radio show, to call me out on the air! No pussy-footing around — a surprisingly NON-sexual phrase? go figure — I hate to be intimidating like that, but, this humble little bloggy-blog is one of my passions and I’m not going to wander around this interweb with my name besmirched!
You got to know your enemy, right? So, I’ve been doing some research… Reading his video/word blog, subscribing to his YouTube channel — this acts as a “double whammy”, 1) watching his “reviews” gives me a keen sense of his way of thinking and 2) by subscribing, it increases is numbers thereby inflating his ego! Anyone who’s EVER watched a 80’s sports movie knows, your over-inflated ego is your worse enemy! MWAHAHAHA!
Still don’t think he’s evil? Check out his review of The New Pornographers Together. Watch as he acts like he likes it (though questions their “superness” & “machismo” & “unison singing” & etc) but then suddenly, without warning, slams the title-esque track “Your Hands (Together) at 3:38!
That’s a passive, subtle, evil-genius kind of evil….. the worse kind! Oh Anthony, come Friday, my “friend”, I’ll show you pain.
Okay, that’s then and as you know, I’m all about the good times, right? So let’s get on with it with today’s special gem, a random surprise for me, Becoming A Jackal by Villagers!
Who are these guys and where did they come from? The first comparison that pops in my head is the pop brilliance of Michael Penn, it’s along those lines, a folk/pop/etc incredibly well-crafted music, minimal when it needs to be, layered when it needs to be, dramatic when it needs to be, nothing forced, just, well, uh, “correct”.
Loading up “I Saw The Dead”, you may question this… but give it time, let it grow, and then let the title track take over, a simple acoustic melody starts it’s off before the bass comes in and then that sweet sweet chorus. You’ll be hooked. I promise. It only continues on from there! “Ship Of Promises” really has that Penn vibe (I think that’s where I was when I was writing the first paragraph). I don’t know, it’s just brilliant!
Okay, I need more coffee, maybe I’ll go stretch, who knows, but I need a kick in the pants. You push play and enjoy!
