Gonjasufi (real name: Sumach Ecks) is a weird motherfucker, and he makes some pretty fucked-up music as well.
Looking like a middle-aged Aboriginal surfer hippie from Cali (he’ll probably want to kill me for this description) Ecks has been releasing music since the beginning of the 90’s, making use of different aliases as he went along. His latest works have been labeled with the monicker Gonjasufi and are without exception very interesting to say the least. Weird, but wonderful stuff. An absolute acquired taste but if you get it, it gets you!
On A Sufi And A Killer, released through Warp Records, the styles range from delightful – relatively – straightforward pop (She Gone) to dark Beastie Boys style slow and grinding beats filled hip-hop (Advice) grinding through stomping garage fuzz rock (SuzieQ) into swamp-style crooning (Ageing) and back again via a Middle-Eastern style neo-psych romper (DedNd). Each song differs from the one before and after it but complements them at the same time. Amazing stuff.

A Sufi And A Killer takes some effort to grasp, no strike that. It takes a lot of effort! And I can safely tell you that you will not succeed in comprehending this masterpiece or even be particularly satisfied after one spin. So don’t let up and give it a few.
And while your at it, go show this weirdo some love:
