Okay, before listening to Hippies by Harlem, I had to forgive & forget two things… One, that their name seems to be on that anti-search engine band name trend (ala Girls) that is going on (granted, maybe they were here before the trend started, maybe they are the trend starters, I guess it beats another Wolf or Bear or Fuck band, eh?) and two, the drummer seems to be wearing a Snuggie (which, as a viral humour “hey did you see that commercial?” thing, should’ve died out after people actually got one for xmas)…
Those two things SCREAMED gimmick at me, causing me to put this one in the back of the queue. Why would I bother with someone who seems to just be taking advantage of silly shit like that to get some pitchfork press time? The closest these kids have come to Harlem is most likely watching the Harlem Globetrotters on Futurama!
By the way, I do a mean Zoidberg impersonation, “Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo!!!”
Haha! But I digress — or do I? Yeah, maybe I do… a little.
But alas, while building our Greatest Hits Of The 10s mixtape, I had to consider Hippies so it was with a slight wince of impending annoyance & doom that I pushed play. You can imagine how happy I was when I heard what suddenly flew into my ears!
Hippies, on it’s surface, is just simple minimalist retro guitar rock, and maybe under the surface as well, but it’s infectious, fun, and feels authentically fond of it’s roots (vs. just mimicking them). It sounds like shitty equipment, playing in a shitty garage, with a shitty 4-track, but because it’s all done so tight & sure of itself and crafted so well, you join in and dance around like an idiot in their driveway, much to the chagrin of Mr. Jenkins down the street who’s getting pretty tired of your antics!!! Probably already calling your moms!
Did any of that make any sense? Probably not, who cares, enjoy!
