Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)… thebear_Jack remembers Songs Of Green Pheasant’s self-titled album!

The holidays may be wrapping up, but the decade continues on! So shall we continue our little end of the decade series called clichely & probably often incorrectly “Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)“…

…where we eschew impossible decade compiling lists and have the wonderful members of our community think back to some of their favourite albums from this past decade and say as many (or few) words about it as they like. This time, thebear_Jack remembers the 2005 self-titled album by Songs Of Green Pheasant… Take it away Jack!

Songs of Green Pheasant – self-titled (2005)

Head tilted sideways, eyes following my index finger through “R” and “S”. Sa-Sc-Se-Si-So-Songs and find it on the shelf, pale green in serf writing. Review by MK; “folk-like and harmonic. Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel”. It was spring then and this was not music for spring, so it suggested: “for late night radio only. rec: 4” Slipped from the shelf and marked, stacked with five others. 4 AM.

The set slowing, moving from Z in rotation to Dylan and Dexter Gordon with no real hangups–“transitions make the set”–and finally cue “Knulp”…

Salina, eleven or twelve years old, laying on my yia-yia’s shag carpet and looking at the cottage cheese ceiling–“I swear to Jesus God I see a candle”–hearing apparition’s from the basement and the drowned commotion from the kitchen. My cousin is sixteen and high, he hears the density of the floor, vibrations from yia-yia’s renter in the basement. We sneak down three or four steps and listen…

“Hippies,” my cousin concludes, running upstairs to score near-empty wine glasses and laugh at my brother cowering in the corner because “That dog. He is trying to bite me!”

I call my younger cousin to sit with me and listen. We hear one person with two voices or two people with one voice and conclude that it is probably not a woman singing. My cousin creeps down the steps, not because I told him to but because he could tell that I wanted him to, and didn’t startle the renter.

“Simon and Garfunkel,” the renter said. “it’s worth paying attention to”…

There was a moment when the record ended and the needle kept amplifying the rotation. The only thing I could understand was the density… I hear harmonics and density.

1. I am Daylights
2. Nightfall (For Boris P.)
3. The Burning man
4. Knulp
5. The Wraith of Loving
6. Until…
7. Hey,Hey, Wilderness
8. Truth but not Fact
9. Soldiers Kill Their Sisters
10. From Here to Somewhere Else
