Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)… irishcornboy remembers Want One by Rufus Wainwright & 1000 Kisses by Patty Griffin

Howdy! Today, we start a little series called clichely & often rather incorrectly “Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)”, where members of our community think back to some of their favourite albums from this past decade and say as few or many words about it as they like. Today, irishcornboy remembers Want One by Rufus Wainwright & 1000 Kisses by Patty Griffin… Take it away irish!

The first being Rufus Wainwright’s “Want”.

A record that propelled the young singer/songwriter into a class nearly all by himself. Forever shaking the tag of being “the son of so and so”. A North American classic that from start to finish labors in love with a wide foray in style and execution. Stunningly original.

1. “Oh What a World”
2. “I Don’t Know What It Is”
3. “Vicious World”
4. “Movies of Myself”
5. “Pretty Things”
6. “Go or Go Ahead”
7. “Vibrate”
8. “14th Street”
9. “Natasha” – 3:29
10. “Harvester of Hearts”
11. “Beautiful Child”
12. “Want”
13. “11:11”
14. “Dinner at Eight”

The second would be another notch in a already stellar career,, Patty Griffin’s “1000 Kisses”.

How do I love this woman’s voice? Both in vocals and pen to paper, Patty sings the saddest music in the world. Yet, unlike many who wallow and self pity and sentiment. Patty writes character’s in song, so strong, they uplift you through their pain and wow you in their tales, very much like a great author or poet would do. The fact that she has killer vocal chops to back them up, only makes the heartache all the more sweeter.

1. “Rain”
2. “Chief”
3. “Stolen Car” (Bruce Springsteen)
4. “Making Pies”
5. “Be Careful”
6. “Long Ride Home”
7. “Nobody’s Crying”
8. “Tomorrow Night” (Sam Coslow & Will Grosz)
9. “Mil Besos” (Emma Elena Valdelamar)
10. “Reprise”

It's great to see some Rufus love. It's been a while… But still good to get a reminder of how great most of his music really was/is.

Thanks for putting this album back in my rotation :)

Agreed! I was long overdue for a Rufus fix…. Outside TsuruBride's Judy Garlin covers, I've been lacking.

    Thanks irishcornboy!!!
