Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)… Alex Delarge remembers the 2009 self-tited album by Wavves

The holidays may be wrapping up, but the decade continues on! So shall we continue our little end of the decade series called clichely & probably often incorrectly “Waxing The Aughts (Poetically)“…

…where we eschew impossible decade compiling lists and have the wonderful members of our community think back to some of their favourite albums from this past decade and say as many (or few) words about it as they like. This time, Alex Delarge remembers the 2009 self-titled album by wavves… Take it away Alex!

wavves – wavves (2009)

alright, so the first track is terrible, nathan williams is a douche, and shitgaze died as soon as it started, but anyone who has ever gotten stoned in the basement of someone you’ve never met before should love this album. every line sounds as if it was ripped from a conversation between a few bored artsy suburban teenagers; like a violent femmes album for an even more self destructive generation. pretty much everybody who has taken the time to analyze this will tell you that they lived each song during their youth. as last summer ended i was alone and penniless, but “no hope kids” was there to help me enjoy my misery much more than i should have. after my last relationship ended and i got drunk and made out with someone at a shitty party i had “california goths” playing in my head, and i hadn’t even heard the record yet. and those wonderful high school nights of cruising the chicago suburbs for weed can be perfectly summed up in the standout “so bored.” anyone else who has had similar events in their lives should rush out and get this now. but this certainly isn’t for all of us. if you can count the number of substances you’ve ever tried on one hand, if as a teen you didn’t sneak out of your house at 2 am to blast lo-fi into your headphones, if you don’t know how to turn an apple, cucumber, socket, milk gallon, light bulb, or water bottle into a bong, and if you don’t have a major inferiority complex then just move along. this record wasn’t meant for you. the rest of us will be here, enjoying our self-loathing and trying to decipher the hilarious thoughts our friends jotted down on the taco bell napkin last night.
