Much like my racquetball battle, it was epic… 20 albums started off, the 20 from our community’s 20 voted most awesomest communitastic albums of 2009, each with 10 points:
10 The Antlers – Hospice
10 Florence & The Machine – Lungs
10 Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
10 Franz Ferdinand – Tonight
10 St. Vincent – Actor
10 Noah & The Whale – First Days Of Spring
10 Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
10 Passion Pit – Manners
10 Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
10 Elvis Perkins In Dearland – s/t
10 Arctic Monkeys – Humbug
10 Mew – No More Stories Are Told
10 Japandroids – Post-Nothing
10 fun. – Aim & Ignite
10 Neko Case – Middle Cyclone
10 The Decemberists – Hazards Of Love
10 Sunset Rubdown – Dragonslayer
10 Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest
10 Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca
10 Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillion
and from there, the action was fast & furious, 2 points off there, 2 points added there, split points, and each member having to wait for 3 other people to go before they could take their next turn. When things got out of hand we’d split the points and continue on, occasionally taking breaks to double check the numbers.
Our resident chart geek, Herki, kept track of the action, refereeing the tallies. He kept a chart, DEFINITELY click for full view:
Seriously, click to really see this ChART!
Remember, this is not a battle for who had the best album of 2009, that vote is over & Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion won that. No, this is a battle for King Of The Mountain. Much like in sports, it’s not the statistically biggest/baddest/fastest/etc that wins the game, it’s strategy & moxie that gets, such as in this case, the underdog what it needs to win.
Without a doubt, MVP goes to Fulltext. He was relentless in his quest to a) take down Sunset Rubdown, The Decemberists, and Neko Case (a moral & mental blow to me) and b) quietly prop up Florence + The Machine.
You can see it on the chart. Right around the halfway point, Florence’s numbers quietly & steadily grow. While me and others were focused on saving Sunset Rubdown, we were unorganized in our taking away of points. When Sunset Rubdown finally succumbed and then Neko Case (our last hold out), Florence was too strong and soon the final standout, Grizzly Bear fell as well.
So, in the end, only one album, one artist, stood tall. Yeah, she may not have our Album Of The Year status, but you know what she is??
