You ready for this? Hell, I don’t even know if I am… This is the biggest post we have ever done. This is huge. Here we go. OH! Before we begin… Don’t forget!
Details and prizes (and a vinyl rip) after the link!!! HURRY!
Okay. Here we go for reals.
For the past month-ish, we had a thread up in the Society, a simple thread really, a chance for each member to list their top 10 albums (or more, or less) for the year. The ranking of the top ten would be assigned points. No. 1 was 10 points, No. 2 was 9, and so on, until No. 10 which got one point (it’s an old system I learned back in the olden days when I hung out at a weezer board (yeah, a weezer board) before it got all creepy & weird and I left).
When the thread was finally locked this past Saturday morning, I pulled out my handy dandy Excel spreadsheet and started the tallying. Now, for posterity, some members posted longer list, but any albums No. 11 or higher were not included in the spread sheet at all, but it was certainly nice to have them, reminded me of a few I probably would’ve forgotten otherwise.
Check this…. When all was said and given a cell on the spread sheet, we had a total of 192 albums!!!
Like I said, that’s 192 albums that made the top 10 lists! That doesn’t include any others and, not too mention, some members didn’t even participate! All I can say is wow. Wow, wow, wow. Anyone out there in internetland who poop-pooped this year, I got to tell you man, you just aren’t trying hard enough!
So, with 192 albums and their rankings — 1,832 points to award and divvy!!! — tallied up, it was time to get to work on the mixtape, I was excited! New music for me, new mixtape for you, all very fun… After we got it all mixed up, tagged up, zipped up, and uploaded, looks like we had room for 20 songs, SOOOOO, you know that means, right???? RIGHT?
The TSURURADIO Community Presents…
Our 20 Voted Most Awesomest Communitastic Albums Of 2009 with Accompanying Mixtape!!!
where’s that applause I love?
ah, much better, thank you…
Like I said, in total, there were 1,832 points awarded, and with 192 albums, that meant a lot to spread around. But, even so, there is no doubt about the final list. Yeah, there are ties (bound to happen with that many albums), there are some surprises, but in the end, there is a clear winner that not even I could deny.
Shall we start?
Cool. Let’s do it.
Here we go. Coming in tied for Nos. 19 & 20, with 16 points each…
Tie Nos. 19 & 20 (16 Points)
The Antlers – Hospice
Florence & The Machine – Lungs
This is great. Neither of these stuck for me, but when seeing them make 19 & 20, I know what I’ll be listening to in the next week or so! I’d write a blip, but honestly, I need to get reacquainted better again before that can happen. Just reason #1,229,417 to love our community.
Squeaking out with an additional point was another tag-team combo…
Tie Nos. 17 & 18 (17 Points)
Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
Franz Ferdinand – Tonight
Quite the opposite of each other, Franz Ferdinand’s indie-rock vs. Bird hyper-literate-near-classical pop, and though I leaned more toward the Bird we have our rockers in the community. While Franz sang about dirty words written on calculators, Bird built songs around a word like anonanimal — that is a word, right?
We make a leap by 6 points to number 23 for this nasty little menage-a-trois! Tied at 14, 15, & 16, we got…
Tie Nos. 14, 15, & 16 (23 Points)
St. Vincent – Actor
Noah & The Whale – First Days Of Spring
Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
Okay, damn fine selection here. Noah made my list and we’ve featured all 3 on TSURURADIO in the past. This is a collection of no brainers to me, from St. Vincent’s quirk, Noah’s gloom, and Mumford’s downhome-iness, these are all right up our alley. When I saw they made it, I gave the community a wink, a smile, and one of those knowing glances, but considering they can’t actually see me, everyone at work just thought I was being creepy.
Our first solo-go-er at 25 points is up next!
No. 13 (25 Points) Passion Pit – Manners
Yeah yeah, not my cup of tea, remind me too much of MGMT or something, and dance music, though enjoyable, tends to dissolve like Equal in my coffee. Mmm.. Coffee. But yeah, apparently our community is prone to a bit of ass-shakin’ and if you are gonna shake what yo momma gave ya, better Manners by Passion Pit than some crappy ass remix of by DJ puffin’ stuff blah blah blah, eh?
You like pop? Me too! And squeaking ahead of Passion Pit with 26 points at No. 12 is…
No. 12. (26 Points) Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I was smitten after seeing the “Lisztomania” brat pack video mash-up, just fun & intelligent pop that wormed it’s away into the hearts of many all over this great big intertube of cyber-super-love. Written about plenty and sure to pop on a bunch of list, so let’s move on to our last tie!
And it’s a doozy. 28 points, another dirty 3-way….
Tie Nos. 9, 10, & 11 (28 Points)
Elvis Perkins In Dearland – s/t
Arctic Monkeys – Humbug
Mew – No More Stories Are Told
Wow, eh? Elvis, as you know, floored my ass. Mew’s icy near-prog like beauty and the resurgence of Arctic Monkeys floored many others! Wish I can say I got into the Monkeys, but I always seemed on the outside of that one (I may have to give that another go). No matter, a wonderfully diverse 3-way, as all 3-ways should be, eh?
Getting one extra little vote, one little notch, was our No. 8 winner…
No. 8 (29 Points) Japandroids – Post-Nothing
See, told you we had some rockers, because Japanandroids kick it up and kick you down, never slowing down until the needle lifts up at the very end (metaphorically and to some of our vinyl addicts, literally). Kinda punkish, and did I waft a note of stoner-rock? No clue, who cares, the community loved it, nuff said.
No. 7…. 40 Points! BLAMO!
No. 7 (40 Points) fun. – Aim & Ignite
fun.! FUN! Hmm… how do you exclaim fun.? Meh, who cares, you know I loved this album, we all loved this album. It is fun and it is fun. Fun, eh?
A late short list by Baby bumped up our next album No. 6. You know who it is, right?
No. 6 (46 Points) Neko Case – Middle Cyclone
NEKO! She loves this album, her No. 1 of the year. It accompanied us on many a car ride and house chill. It’s Neko. I think she’ll always have a special place in our hearts, and certainly in the hearts of many.
Top 5?!?! Already?
Hell yeah! And at 51 points we got…
No. 5 (51 Points) The Decemberists – Hazards Of Love
My number one album was also loved my the society! HOORAY! Sometimes it feels good to not be alone. I’ve talked about this album here and there and everywhere more times than I should. For that, I apologize, but it was a wonderful, bold, and beautiful project/undertaking that, we feel, succeeded.
But it didn’t beat out this next beaut at 56 points…
No. 4 (56 Points) Sunset Rubdown – Dragonslayer
Well you can take me to the draaagonslayerrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Fuck yeah! KRUG! Just fuck yeah.
Oh shit. It’s getting serious!
No. 3, here we go with 66 honking points!
No. 3 (66 Points) Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest
Their masterpiece? We seem to think so! At the very least, anyone who’s heard “Two Weeks” has to at least admit that it’s one of the songs of the year, right? Really, just a gorgeous album, layered and textured and harmony and yummy and our No. 3 of the year! WOOOOT!
But at 75 points, our No. 2 would not play dead to some scruffy bears, eh?
No. 2 (75 Points) Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca
BLAMO! Actually our No. 1 for a good portion of the tallying, but some later lists that favoured our actual No. 1 grabbed the Dirty Projectors by the coat tails, yanking back to Silver. Beautiful & complex album, often too smart for me, but fortunately for Dirty Projectors, our community certainly kicks my ass in the IQ ranking system! Ha!
But in the end.
There could only be one number one.
And at 81 points.
There was really no question who it is.
The TSURURADIO Community’s Number One album of 2009….
It’s Most Awesomest….
i.e. It’s absolute favourite….
At 81 massive points, is…..
No. 1 (81 Points) Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillion
Yep. Mother fucking Animal Collective. Damn! I’ll admit, it’s the only Animal Collective album I like, so for me, that’s worth quite a bit, but I’ll be damned if the more evolved music lovers in the community didn’t think this album was just the shit. Who’d a thunk it, eh? Good for them!
Well, congratulations Animal Collective! Your figurative trophies are in the metaphorical mail, usually takes 6 to 8 weeks for delivery. And thank you so much to everyone who participated in the vote! Next up, we’ll play that +2 / -2 point game we played last year to see who is king of the mountain, as well as do a little reminiscing over the decade that was… Should be good fun!
Wasn’t that a hoot! But, son, we ain’t done! Oh, hell no! Because, what’s a “best of” list without a mixtape to go with it? A shitty list, that’s what. So, here’s what I did, something a little different, I took a song off of each album, put the songs in order by the album’s ranking, mixed it up, cut it up, tagged it, zipped it, and uploaded it. Kinda fun to force the tracklist order that way, and ultimately I think it works! But you be the judge.
Going from our No. 1 album by Animal Collective to our No. 19/20 with Antlers, and every album in between….The TSURURADIO Community Presents…
Our 20 Voted Most Awesomest Communitastic Albums Of 2009 Mixtape!!!

15 Noah And The Whale – I Have Nothing
16 Mumford And Sons – I Gave You All

19 Florence And The Machine – Kiss With A Fist
20 The Antlers – Thirteen
Okay, before we go, I wanted to give a special “shout out” (as the kids say) to ALL the albums that made someone’s top 10. It really shows you how diverse we, as music lovers, truly are… one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and there may be no truer words. So, the following is a list, in order-ISH (there are a LOT of ties as you make your way down the list) of the albums 21 through 192 along with a few truly random mp3s to give you a little flavour (literally & truly picked randomly).
Just keep in mind, we are pretty easy peasy in the Society, so “2009 album” can take on a few meanings. Maybe it was released in 2008 except in their country? Maybe they wanted to include EPs (I don’t), etc. So, if you see some “mistakes”, don’t let it get to you too much, just push play and enjoy.
Oh. And if I fucked up the linking and coding. Fuck it. I’m BEAT. This post is huge and I am but one man. So again, just push play and enjoy. ;)
Thank you sooooooo much to our wonderful community! Without them, really, this blog would be absolutely nothing & pointless. You guys make it fun and oh-so-worth it! Love you guys…
Enough mushy stuff, here we go!
