ONLY 3, YEP THREE!, DAYS LEFT TO…
Well, allo dere! Happy Friday to ya! A 3 day weekend to boot! How sweet biscuits is that??? Well, I say pretty sweet biscuits indeed…
Mmm, sweet biscuits…
So, yeah, it’s Friday and with the long weekend of activities and cleaning and festivities and preparation for next weekend’s Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago featuring TsuruBride, should be a great 3 days! Plus, I just did a new photoshoot at the Brookside Motel last night, so plenty of TSURUFOTO action to work on too… HOORAY!
With the wonderful weekend looming, let’s get on with some amazing music that’s leaked & graced itself all over my ears, shall we? I’m thinkin’ we do a Twofer Friday as I’m finding it rather impossible to decide which to focus on given they are both pretty damn special. So today I’d like to share a little I And Love And You by The Avett Brothers AND White Water, White Bloom by Sea Wolf, if that’s okay with you….
Yeah, I thought it would be.
Roots rocker / folksters have amped up the pop to about 8, maybe even 9, with the addition of one Mr. Rick Rubin and a major label release. Much to the chagrin of some, I’m sure, Rick Rubin has a way of pulling your inner-pop-monkey out in the open to run around rampant, throwing feces at passer-bys. Sometimes the results leave fans ducking & running for cover (see the Weezer fans & Make Believe), other times, he helps bring a little pop focus and clarity into an artist that may have lost it’s way (see Neil Diamond).
This time though, Rubin worked with the Avett Brothers on their Columbia records debut. We start off with the title track “I And Love And You”, a quiet piano opener that builds into an explosion of piano-soft-rock fruit flavour.
Okay, that sentence there should’ve either had you excited to listen or made you turn around and run out the room screaming. Well, dammit, I love me some piano soft-rock pop. Does it “challenge me”, no, not really, but that’s fine. Sometimes you just want to drop the needle, smile, head nodding slowly, easy, baby, like Sunday morning.
The album continues this basic thematic, adding country/folky/bluesy/rootsy flavour-crystals, depending on the song, reminiscent of some of the other “Brothers” bands from days of yore. It’s all good times and perfect for some Baby-style chillin’…
Now, like I said, these guys are in the majors now, so we are just going to share the “single”. Sorry, I don’t want Sony/Columbia’s dirty attorneys all up in my crawl. Enjoy it, and go get the rest!

Now, we ain’t done yet! Because, back in indie-land, Sea Wolf’s latest, White Water, White Bloom, has made it’s away around the bend and into our view!
Now, the generic descriptor here would be indie-folk-rock or something, and that’s about as accurate as you could get. In those situations, it takes something to pull you out of the white noise, and with Sea Wolf, there’s just a depth of sound & melody that gives them that weight to pull him away from the herd. His label calls him art-rock and literate. I definitely agree that there is a feeling of higher intelligence, that there’s something really important that Church is trying to share with us, and it matches up perfectly with his ability to create fully fleshed out songs.
A wonderful surprise — in the sense that, I had no idea an album was coming out! — and a wonderful way to start off the weekend! So, enjoy the first few tracks, like always, then go buy the rest!

Have a great weekend! If the good lard’s a-willin’ (and the creeks don’t rise) I should be able to get back on track with some vinyl ripping!
Have fun, go riding, and we’ll talk to you soon!
