Know Better Learn Faster by Thao With The Get Down: Cool yourself, you are flush red…

Photography by Julia Davis

Okay kiddos… busy booger, lots of work and a photoshoot this afternoon means a condensed day, means we gotta keep it light, keep it easy, and keep it fun. Well thank lardy Thao (Nguyen) With The Get Down and their latest effort, Know Better Learn Faster, fits right in with the days motif.

Now… I’ll admit. Didn’t really get into her last albu, I don’t think she had “The Get Down” with her then, just found the whole thing a bit too cutesy, even for my sucker for a cutesy melody-ass self. So, yeah, there was a wee bit o’ hesitation when it came time to give this puppy a spin.

Not sure if it’s Thao, or if it’s the Get Down she got down with, but we got the meat I was looking for, expressed perfectly in the stompy almost-acapella mini-intro “The Clap” – no, it’s not about diseases…. I think – which is over just as quickly as it begins, then “Cool Yourself” kicks it’s little groove in and we get our asses a-movin’ and a-shakin’, keeping it cool, smooth, fun, light, etc, etc…. like I said, perfect for today. That theme carries, pretty much, for the whole thing, just keeps moving us along, never weighting us down too much, but at the same time, never leaving you empty and wondering if you just gained 2 cavities (i.e. not too sugary, for those not following along).

;)

Okay, sorry so short today, gotta run! But here’s the first few songs to get you going.. then go buy the rest — the title track has a nice little Andrew Bird thing going on with the swooping violin and even some whistling… nice…. actually, is he on this track? If not, someone owes somebody some royalties or something!

Anyways, enjoy!

    I'm surprised you didn't get into her last effort. She's got the jingle, the jangle and the girl vocals. Thanks for the headsup I will definitely give it a listen. loved that one about hammers she did.

    She did have the Get Down Stay Down with her for the last album. Don't know about prior, but they did work with her on that. I loved the prior one, too. Almost as much as this one.

    @Jet, yeah….. just didn't click!

    @Chris… I'm sure you are right, but it just didn't seem like it compared to this one, you know?
