Oh me oh my, what a weekend… What a goddamn weekend! If you were following along on Twitter & the Facebooks you already know a significant chunk of the goings on, so a quick, quick summary of one amazing weekend. Friday, nervous preparation & registration for the Pelotonia, bed early. Saturday, amazing route, amazing ride, 100 miles, 3 flat tires — yeah, THREE — 1 crazy ass climb, twitpic’d along the way. Here’s THE twitpic photo that pretty much tells the story…

Sunday, wonderful Baby time, a new bike, then a perfect little 12 mile bike ride with Baby, chocolate desserts & wine (before dinner), and a lovely quiet evening.

Wha? A new bike you say?

YEP! After somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 miles, 3 centuries, god knows how many rides, it was time to upgrade from my dear Kapu to a brand new 2008 BMC Road Racer SL01 who I, obviously, named “Clementine”! Really, she named herself. Oh, you want to see a non-purposefully vintage looking pro-ish digital photo so you can peep the deets??? Here you go..

And she a beaut!! Full SRAM Rival components and a beautiful, light, and very unique frame, VERY tight and responsive, an absolute joy to ride! Rode her in this morning on 20 mile commute in, dear lardy my legs are tired from all the riding, but man it’s just a happy feeling. Also, got her basically half-off! Which satisfies the aspiring frugal Canuck in me! Thank you baby, so so much… I can not WAIT to ride the next 10,000 miles and more and more (and more and more) on my little tangerine!

So yeah… Pretty amazing & adventurous weekend, to say the least. The Pelotonia itself? A bit of a clusterfuck. Over 2,200 riders all leaving at once mean a big giant mess of riders. Saw a couple accidents, a ton of near accidents as many people don’t know how to ride in a group all that well, a lot of walking up the big climbs, and so on. It was a pretty intense ride, not just the miles, but some of the climbs were pretty tough! One cancer survivor was even taken to the hospital! The route was gorgeous though, challenging, and fun, but I ride alot. I’m not sure what others thought. I’m so glad they were able to raise over $4 million dollars that all went to cancer research, BUT the Pelotonia was certainly flawed… here’s my hindsighted two-cents.

  1. WARN PEOPLE of the ride & route better. Maybe I missed it, but I did not see where they tried to scare a few people into being better prepared to ride 100 miles featuring some decent climbs & descents. I was fine, but I ride alot, there were plenty of people doing their very first century that day, a little bit of “hey, this shit ain’t easy, just get ready” would’ve been good.
  2. Please make it round trip. PLEASE! Ending in Athens is fine in concept, but now you are 80 miles from home, have some nasty wrestler’s locker room to shower in with a ton of naked dudes, got to have a bunch of tractor trailers to haul the bikes back and we get a hot, no-bathroomed bus ride back home? I didn’t get home until 8pm, I could’ve been home by 3… You know? Oh, AND you have two places to organize and manage? That, the buses, the trucks, is just wasted money (not to mention the environmental aspect) that could’ve gone to cancer research, no?
  3. Lance… It’s great he was there, it got a lot of people to participate who might not have otherwise, but there was no “riding with Lance”. I, personally, don’t want to ride with him, BUT sticking him at the very front to ride off at some pro-speed, where then a few of the people in the front pedal their asses off to catch a glimpse is not “riding with Lance”. By the time I had a hamburger on my plate at the finish, Lance was tweeting from Colorado. Here’s my suggestion. Let everyone start, THEN have Lance start, he can even take a little peloton to protect him as he makes his way through and past the 2,200+ riders, slowing occasionally to say, “hello dere”. Then, once he’s at the front, poof, he can fly like a bumble bee (he REALLY likes the black & yellow colourway). I’m just saying, it would’ve made a lot of people very, very excited & happy.

Oh well, it’s done, another cycling adventure in the books. We even made the Columbus Dispatch, well their bike blog at least… Can’t pick us out? Here, I labeled it for you.

Haha!

Physically, I was pretty strong. I think I could’ve gone another 20 or so miles, which is great because next year I’m really hoping to give randonneurring a try! 200km, 400, maybe even 600km with time checkpoints? Sounds absurdly French and absurdly awesome!

Okay, if there’s one thing a hundred mile bike ride is good for, it’s for thinkin’… And now, with some fresh bike porn on my mind, I think it’s time for another photo contest!!!! This time it’s the…

THAT’S RIGHT!!! Luscious & saucy bike porn. Here’s all you got to do…

  1. Take a picture of you & your bicycle, get creative, have fun! Be as literal or figurative or ironic or metaphorical as you want to be!!!
  2. Send that picture to me via the facebooks, the twitters, our society, or good ol’ email by Monday 9/7! Yep, you have ONE WEEK to take one picture, not too difficult, eh?
  3. Wait and see who wins!

And what does the winner of our favourite bike porn photo receive? It’s a nice collection of swag, of course! First, you will receive one of the two remaining…

Stinkybomb Cassette Tape Soap!!!

You can choose between the green or the blue (the pink one now resides in a bathroom in Germany). Because, nothing’s better after a hundred mile bike ride than a shower with Cassette soap!
But that’s not all! You will also receive….

AN ORIGINAL TSURUFOTO PRINT, “COCONUT MAN”!!!

Now THERE’S some bike porn! The hawtness. Aaaaaaaand, now this one may be dumb, weird, or cool, can’t tell, but you will also receive…

MY PELOTONIA LIVESTRONG BRACELET

Yep, the Livestrong yellow rubberband bracelet that traveled with me from Columbus to Athens, OH, it’s even still all dirty to make it nice and “authentic”. Like I said, it’s either a dumb, weird, or cool prize. I don’t know, I think it’s kinda cool when you think about some body in the world somewhere wearing a bracelet that spent a day in the middle of Ohio on some other persons arm helping to raise money for cancer research while riding on a bicycle.

*shrugs*

But I’m weird like that. Also, I’ll see if I can dig up another cool prize to add in the pot, maybe a little something for 2nd place? Not sure, we’ll figure something out.

So, whatcha waitin’ fer? Get photographin!!!

Oh… you want some music too? No problem, because over the weekend a literal slew & plethora of new music found it’s way on the intertubal super highway. The first one to crawl it’s way up my headphone wires, through my ear canals, down my neck, and into my heart is the the latest from A. A. Bondy, When the Devil’s Loose!

Kinda fitting we mention “authenticity” a minute ago, because when you listen to A.A. Bondy, the album is dripping it with it. Basically, it’s folk/roots rock, simple and true, nothing too complicated about that and maybe, initially, you might wonder what’s the point of another folk/roots rock band. Maybe the answer there is no point, except to have another perspective, another person’s approach to the genre, to give it some weight & depth, and that’s where Bondy delivers. Though he’s surrounded by a band, Bondy sounds alone, like he’s been on the road, where maybe you aren’t “physically” alone all the time, but you feel alone, which of course is only punctuated by the nights alone in the hotel where it’s you, some old used bed, and a shitty TV. There’s a sense of detachment that comes with those moments and all you have are your own thoughts.

Bondy has somehow captured that feeling, those thoughts, and built When The Devil’s Loose, creating, not only a beautiful soundtrack for today, but also something for those lonely nights, something to remind you that actually, no, you aren’t alone, others are there too…. right now.

Nice… Enjoy the first few tracks to get your mouth a-waterin’, then go buy the rest! And go take some pix of your bikes!
