Waxing nostalgic: And now, for absolutely no reason at all, a Duran Duran party!!!! WHEE!

Okay, yesterday I was listening to stellastarr* and it’s high-wheeling bass on a few tracks got me hankering some Duran Duran. Well, a few videos and songs later, we had ourselves a full fledged Duran Duran party going on in Our Society!

Videos, pix, and songs were popping up and I was suddenly a young boy in Tampa, FL, living with my mom & my sis and jamming out to “The Reflex”!

That video was bad ass, uber-mullets and all (well, except the skeezy guy playing the double cowbell thingy)! I even remember the first time I heard that song. I was in my mom’s old Toyota Corolla, in the front passenger seat (MY spot) as we drove along at night home from the laundromat when the local radio station (probably Q105, at the time, they were top40 back then) “premiered” the song. I was already a big fan, having gleefully absorbed “Rio”, “Hungry Like The Wolf”, etc, but “The Reflex” sounded so new, contemporary, and downright awesome to my 10 or 11 year old ears, “Th-th-th-th-the reflex… fl-fl-fl-flex!” haha! And those electric drums…. lordy! “You’ve gooone to farrrr this tiiiime!”

Much has been written and said about Duran Duran & music videos, would they have been as popular without them? No clue. Were they innovators pushing the concept of “music video” to the near-movie like level? I don’t know…. but man, what about the videos! Yesterday we featured “Girls On Film”, reposted here…

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg (and a sexy tip at that)! What about “Hungry Like The Wolf”?

Or the Mad Max channeling “Wild Boys”…

Man! And what about the one that started it all for me….. “Rio”?

“Her name is Riooo and she daaances on the saaaand!”

Really, all their videos because they were, much to the chagrin of “real artists” just as much about the visual, the style, the fashion, as they were about the music. But honestly, aren’t all bands… Every band dresses (or doesn’t dress) they way the do on purpose. Don’t we all? For the first example that randomly popped in my head, doesn’t Sam from Iron & Wine look like Sam from Iron & Wine should look and on purpose? Isn’t this….

Just as intentional as this…

Let’s move on to the music… and what of it? Well, I may lose cool points (or maybe gain ironic cool points now that the 80’s are hawt again? no clue), but I loved Duran Duran. Simple, fun, catchy, hook-laden new-wavey, romantic poppy pop….. Anybody who can write the lyrics, “do do do-do do do-do do do-do do do-do do doooooo” and make me laugh, dance, and smile while singing along, bopping around like a mentally challenged monkey is alright by me.

Then the endurance! Sweet bajiggity jesus! They’ve been together since 1978? Damn, not bad for a “boy band”, eh? How many combacks and successful re-inventions is one band allowed to have? “No-no-notorrious!”, “Through an orrrdinarrrry worrrld! I will learrrn to surviiiiiiiiiiiiiive!!” and I think they had another minor hit not too long ago that I think became a TV theme song or something? I don’t know, but man, just crazy.

So today, with the party hammering along in full swing, it only figures that it would spill into your favourite bloggy blog. So, what I did was grab a few of my favourites from way back and that “Ordinary World” comeback song (it’s cheesy ballad good times), and got them ready to share today. Let’s get to it, shall we as…
