Indie-darling and overall Cutie McCutiepants Zooey Deschanel is about to take the world back into “adorable overload” again. This time, back in her main money train, the movies, with (500) Days Of Summer. In case you have NO idea what I’m blabbering on about, here’s the trailer…
Looks like a cute little Summer favourite, ala Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, Infinite Mixtape, etc, etc, et al, eh?Now, I know some of you may be a little Zooeyed out, and that’s completely understandable, but with adorably quirky “indie” movies (Fox searchlight, sooo indie) comes adorably quirky “indie” movie soundtracks, right? Right….
Now, I wouldn’t say this sound track is all that heavy on the “indie”, or even on the “quirky” for that matter, but, as far as soundtracks go, it ain’t too shabby! It goes from Spektor, to romantic troubador Morrissey, to a bit o’ the classics of Simon & Garfunkel and Hall & Oates, resulting in a nice little tromp around what I expect is the general feel of the movie, but what stuck out most to me was the two covers at the end of some rather iconic songs, Meaghan Smith’s (seriously? Meaghan? I’ve see Megan, Meagan, Meghan (my wife), but I think the “a” AND the “h” is a bit much, no?) cover of Pixie’s “Here Comes Your Man” and Zooey herself bringing She & Him back around with the Smith’s “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want”.
Both covers oooooooze with adorable adorabanicity. “Here Comes Your Man” is now a slowed down boop-boop boop, boop-boop boop ditty. Kinda like how some artists do when they take a mainstream pop song and completely put it on Zoloft to fuck around? Yeah, kinda like that. It works though, fortunately, and it’s sure to land on mixtapes all over the bloggity blog world and new relationships alike (as well as one of my own, I’d wager).
“Please, Please…” also drips with saucy cuteness, but this time, it’s already pretty slow, so Zooey just sings in her unique way while echo & reverb fills the space behind her. To She & Him’s credit, it comes off as more of a tribute than an ironic change-up, but regardless, another one for a million mixtapes, I’m sure.
I’m not much of an OST fan (“Original Soundtrack”, to those not in the know, oo la la, I think I’m going to talk in abbreviations more, it makes me feel more knowledgeable & elite, ha!) in general, but ever now and then, you get a pretty sweet collection to fill the air & grey matter, a little Zooey, oversaturation to you or not, is just cherry on the icing on the chocolate filling cake….
