This is it, the big day, “game day” if you will….. I’ve got the nervous adrenaline-enhanced jitters as I know it’s all about to go down. After jabs and a little right hook or two over the past week, shortly, at the end of this post, we are going to lay the deadly blow in the TSURURADIO vs. The 405 Mixtape Battle, or maybe more aptly called a “Mixtape Apocalypse“.
To the few of you who missed all the hub-bub leading up to this, let me summarize what the hell’s going on….
The 405, named, apparently, after a street or highway or something (probably where Eddie Murphy goes to get his transvestite prostitute lovins on) seemed to think that California, home of the vacant & vapid, creator of the word “celebutante“, had more musical muscle, more melodic meat, than our beloved Great White North (a.k.a. Canada a.k.a. Canuckland). To that I said, “Say WHAAAA?!?”
As a Floricanadian myself (born Floridian, aka Canada’s Winter Home, married Canadian) I took great offense at this claim, this weak assertion, this pathetic attempt to validate a state that thinks it’s a country only because it’s ego has the metaphorical penis of a two-year-old.
There was only one way to resolve this, a Mixtape Battle. The 405 will exhibit California’s “A” talent (HA!) and I will bring the Canucks, and it all goes down today, now. What Oliver (the ballsy and obviously delusional blogger at the The 405) doesn’t realize is exactly WHY, since the dawn of modern music, Canada has been SO prolific in music…. Two things, their quasi-socialism and the weather.
To the Amoricans out there, you may be scratching your red, white, and blue balls wondering how on earth a high-tax rate with universal healthcare and a long cold winter could cause such amazing music to be birthed. Well, let me try to explain.
First, the quasi-socialism… this one’s easy. Simply, Canada supports the arts while the states have the “NEA” or whatever, that does nothing but become the occasional platform for political battles (OMG, how can you fund that artist who pees on crucifixes? OMG, my jeebus is all pee-peed on now! Wah! Wah!).
But what about the weather? As we all know, there is a fine line between genius and insanity, isolate a genius and they can create masterpieces of arts & sciences or go mad. This is Canada:
And that, my friends, creates a whole lot of isolation. For the budding musical genius who finds himself trapped in a house covered in snow, there’s nothing to do but create new music, venture into new realms and new genre styles and blending and bending, create new worlds and soundscapes, then record them, OR go crazy and end up play the triangle for Broken Social Scene or one of the other 40 million musical collectives.
Today, we celebrate the results of this redistribution of wealth and frozen isolation in the form of what I believe is one of the best mixtapes I’ve ever created!!! Seriously, I’m really happy with this one.
Now, to keep it fair and to not embarrass the 405 TOO MUCH, I kept my modern, i.e. no Neil Young, no Joni Mitchell, no Leonard Cohen, and not even Ron Sexsmith. But, as we scan the dial, pulling in the Canadian transmissions that trickle across the border, maybe, if you have a trained ear, you might hear a little bit from the Canucks of old. You never know what you’ll pick up on the antenna….
One last thing…. A quick “Thank You” to all our friends and family down in Our Society. They were my test bunnies to all three rough drafts, giving vital feedback and opinion, that shaped this mixtape into the awesomeness that it is being presented today. Thank you guys so much!
In a tiny show of gratitude, we gave them first dibs to the final product over at Baby & I’s (Baby & me’s, Baby & my’s??) new site, Tsuru And The Bride!!! Tsuru And The Bride is the merging of our two creative blogs & endevours, TSURUFOTO and TsuruBride, which we are both very excited about!
Come on down and visit us, bookmark us, and see what Baby & I are up to with all our creations and adventures at:
Don’t worry, this won’t be replacing TSURURADIO, instead it will help to make your favourite little oddball music blog a bit more “musically pure”, not 100%, of course (I wouldn’t even know how to NOT talk in the tangents that pop in my head), but definitely a bit more focused on the music.
Okay, that’s it…. We’ve delayed the demise of The 405 long enough! Sorry Oliver…. Sorry for doing this to you, a friend & fellow blogger. As my dad would say as he pulled off his size 48 leather belt before he beat me on the back of my legs when I was a child, “this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you”. It’s a lie, sure, but maybe you can take a little solace & comfort in the imagery of a young Tsuru getting whipped because, that’s about as close as you’ll ever get to beating me! Oh snaps! I think…
