So we are halfway through the year, right? And as tradition is, tradition does, and all the blogs are doing their “best of the year (so far)” thing. I was going to follow suit, but the more I’m thinking about 2009, the tougher it is to figure out who I like the best! Each day, hour, hell, even minute, it’s changing! What IS my top 5? Top10? Fuck, I have no idea anymore!!! What’s a bird to do?
Well, if you can’t do something right, do something completely different even better! That’s what mama used to say, or something like that…
It’s been a nutty year so far, to say the least. But to get a nice retrospective feel for what has been, we need to set the atmosphere, to set the mood, I’ve included a “Bibby retrospective” video (I think he was some short guy or “little person” who played basketball or something…. not really sure, don’t really care). Push play on the video below, and let the music, the feel, the overall spirit soundtrack & emote you as you read the rest of this post. Go ahead, I’ll wait…
Is it playing? Wait til we get to about 0:23 secs…… There we go, moving, isn’t it? You feelin’ it? You got that Karate Kid climatic moment in your bones?? Okay, let’s move on.
It’s been an exciting half-a-year asTSURURADIO has gone from just discussing albums and sharing mixtapes & vinyl rips, to adding video moments, single track reviews, re-birthing a whole community, watching the rise and fall and rise and fall of our podcasts, and expanding into social networks like the Facebooks & even the Twitters! Not bad for a single little Floricanadian oddball, eh? On a personal note, outside of your favourite little music and photography (and cycling) worshipping blog, we saw the launching of TSURUFOTO: Etsy Edition, Tsuru And The Bride, and the continued growth of TsuruBride, who, by the way, will be at Comfest this weekend!!! Then on the bike, I’ve ridden over 2,000 miles, including 2 centuries, one of which you helped to raise over $1,300 for diabetes, something I’m quite proud of you guys about!! I often brag how awesome my readers are to strangers. They tend to just look at me blankly (that’s a word, right?).
Musically, ’09 has been just as bananas-on-a-stick, as we’ve seen the releases of the big names (in our book) absolutely deliver, such as M. Ward, Decemberists, and Sunset Rubdown and we’ve learned about new bands, like Clues and Phantom Band, making mind-blowing debuts, or just debuting in our mind and blowing us away, like The Lovely Feathers.
In a way, I want it to end now. It’s been so fun, so fast, so (can I say it?) furious, that it can’t POSSIBLY keep it up for another six months, can it? But then I see Islands & Noah And The Whale are releasing new albums, and REM & New Pornographers are both working on theirs (but that’s probably 2010, right? RIGHT?) and lard (or metacritic) knows who else is birthing an album this year (is it a boy?). Is it any different than last year? Not really, but it is more obvious. Less digging and more “here! here! here! here!”, if you follow?
In a year when shit keeps getting blown up in the middle east and over here, the economy is probably still heading for a depression, it’s nice to see there are so many things to still be happy and excited about, the music being one of them. So, I’m going to keep the jibber-jabber to a minimum today (TOO LATE!) and let the music of 2009 speak for itself. What follows ain’t no mixtape, it really just a collection…. A collection of songs, at last count it looks like 75 of them, from this year (unless I screwed up) from some great albums or maybe just great songs (Discovery, I’m looking at you, one, maybe two good songs, tops!), and hell, one or two that aren’t on an album (yet) that I’m aware of, all in alphabetical order by the file name (which can make for a pretty good shuffle on it’s on).
Some albums & songs we discussed and shared already in posts or mixtapes or whatever, some we didn’t, but we are living in an ADD world (and I’m an ADD girl? wait, that’s not right) and most of us may have already forgotten so much, hell, I probably forgot some key albums below as well (which I’m sure you’ll tell me about). Oh well, if I spent more time combing through this year, I’d never get this monster up! So, let’s get to it (I’ve got some major html-linking to do, but first, if the youtube thing is still playing, push stop) as….
Are We Having Fun Yet? FUCK YEAH!!! i.e. a collection of (75) songs from 2009!!!

Now, you know I’m all about buying the albums (preferably the record) of what you like….. But if you are anything like me, when you walk into a record store you forget the name of every band you ever liked. So here’s what I want you to do…..
Make some room on your ipods, load all 75 into a new playlist, hit shuffle/play, then hop on your bicycle and ride to you local record store. Whenever you come to a song you like, look at the player, head over to that letter, and buy the first album you see by that artist. You win, the record store wins, and finally the artists wins! HOORAY! A TRIPLE WHAMMY!
But before you do, lift up your glasses, I’d like to propose a toast…… Here’s to a wonderful 1st half, and if the good lard’s a-willin’ and the creeks don’t rise, a delightful second!
OU R S O C I E T Y
& yes, even Twitter…
