Finally Friday and there’s usually a little truth to cliches, though I never understood what “God” had to do with Fridays (I think the “week” is a man-made invention of time measuring), but whatever, it produced a lovely fried foods chain restaurant and really, who can’t go for a heaping helping of fried macaroni & cheese?
I think my cholesterol just shot up a few points just by looking at that photo. Ah, TGI Fridays, where even in Malaysia at the lovely Queensbay Mall you can load up on their 3 course special for only 39.90 RM!
Not sure what an RM is, but I betcha they can fry it!
But I digress (I love that phrase. Pretentious? Yes. A heaping played of fried awesome? Don’t you know it!)… We aren’t here to besmirch a wonderful chain eatery, I’m sure TGI Friday’s is just as delicious and amazing and reasonably priced as Chili’s or Applebee’s or something something. No, we are here to discuss an album I should’ve discussed ages ago, but when my iPod was deleted (thanks Songbird) it was forgotten, but eventually re-added when reviews started popping up reminding me it existed, but way down the queue as so much ’09 awesomeness kept coming and bukkakeing me right in the eye! But finally, finally, Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors came out of player and into my ears…
Kind of a tough sell for me at first, I’ll be honest. I liked a few songs here and there, and they’ve even popped up on a few mixtapes of ours, but when I first truly listen-listened to the album, the flow (and ebb), all the little eccentricities, I wasn’t sure how to take it, so I quit it and went to Fiery Furnaces. Then I gave it another go, quit it, and went to Chris Garneau. Popped it on again, still need time, so I quit it & bumped my 75 songs from 2009 post up a day!
Finally today, Friday, it was decision time… Next week will be a new week, and I’m not going to fuck around with this thing anymore! I’m either going to figure it out or shelve it for later in the year. So, with my best game face on, I pushed play on the ghettoblaster, laid down some cardboard, and got ready to do the worm.
Some chimy guitars got me ready, got me psyched up, and then boom-boom-cha it goes!
Here’s the thing…. You can’t sit still listening to Bitte Orca, every second you think you settled into a groove, Longstreth switches things up, slows it down, throws in a random drum sequence, and I mean truly random, then stops and goes, it’s like a fucked up game of Red Light / Green Light!
The moment you start moving, you feel Dave yell “Red Light”, and you stop, wait, and see who didn’t stop in time. “Green Light!” Go!
Ack! Are you fucking with me Dave? I don’t know, maybe.
But in the end, it’s about control… You have to let it go and just ride with it. It’s unconventional, just not in a conventional proggy way, it’s more like prog with a wicked case of ADD. Where the prog that’s near and dear to my heart leads you on a long, winding road journey, Bitte Orca takes you on a journey to the end of your street.
I’m not sure how much I love it, but I do. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll listen to it, but for now, for today, I’m letting myself go and letting these Dirty Projectors be in charge…
