Hailing from Milton, Ontario in good ol’ Canada (you hear that Oliver? Don’t worry… it’ll all be over soon) just outside of glorious Toronto (affectionately called T-Punta in Mexico), the good folks over in The Most Serene Republic have offered up their latest collection of symphonic / cinematic / classical often-prog pop / rock gems to my wanton ears with …And The Ever Expanding Universe.
Did you catch that, “symphonic / cinematic / classical often-prog pop / rock”? A bit of a mouthful, eh? Honestly, how else do you describe Most Serene Republic? At times, you think you are listening to a soundtrack to a movie, other times they are bombastic where you feel thankful they aren’t writing nationalistic call to arms (Canada would rule the world, not just musically, but literally by now), and then there are the moments that are pure prog pop, multi-part, time/tempo changin’ mini-epics….
Add all that with their sublime vocal choices & uses…. and well, you got a happy boy in Tsuru. When looking up the sweet lovins links for the bottom of the post (which I hope you click through), came across a few older videos I figured we share now, check ’em, yo!
“The Men Who Live Upstairs”
Pretty sweet, eh? Sometimes, on first listens, you think MSR has that whole collective “what the fuck is going on, too many things, help, help!” thing going on, and maybe with a soft listen I’d agree. But this is one of those bands that rewards you with deeper, harder, and repeated (ha! that sounds funny) listens. Let what sounds messy and incoherent settle in, and I think you’ll see the beauty that lies beneath….
Enjoy the first few tracks then go get the rest!
