Let’s take it down a notch shall we???? Mama Tsuru is in town and it’s time to take it down, take it slow, relax, and enjoy the good times. What better way to do that than with a bit of newness from the Bowerbirds and their latest gem, Upper Air?
You know we loved Hymns For A Dark Horse, so it was exciting to see what, if any, new direction Bowerbirds took with Upper Air. I had a feeling it was going to be a much harder album, a bit o’ a rocker… why? Check out that album cover, up in the clouds, 80’s style fonts, even adding the “perspective lines” I was so famous for back in grade school when I’d draw my name….
Pretty awesome, eh? It’s like it’s coming RIGHT AT YOU! WATCH OUT!!! B-YOO! B-YOO! Yeah, I still got it!
So, I load up Upper Air, and what do you know, they kept their earthy acoustic sound, no Boston emulation AT ALL!
This time, the songs seem even more organic, richer, fuller, and more… personal? Kinda gets me thinking of Elvis Perkins a little bit, which (as you know) is a really good thing. Each song seems simple enough, but as you listen again you start to hear all the layers of instrumentation, strings, an accordion I think, all melding together into a quiet & beautiful symphony adding depth to each guitar stroke.
And, of course, I’m always a sucker for male-female harmonies. Happy sigh…..
But guys, don’t be shy, look at the Decemberists, sea-shanty acoustic group turned quasi-metal-proggy-concept-rock band. I’m just saying, plug it in, turn it up, and let’s here you cover “More Than A Feeling“!
I close my eyes and I drift awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!
*insane air guitar goes here*
Anyways, as the sky tries to hold back some impending thunderstorms, and we trudge along our day looking forward to another lovely evening with Mama Tsuru & Baby… This time, at least, sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty that is Bowerbirds….OH, AND DON’T FORGET… ONLY 2 DAYS LEFT ON THE GREAT TSURURADIO SWAG TOUR De CURE DONATION AUCTION!!!
