What would the neighbors think?

Got a few minutes at lunch, so let’s talk about a little album that slipped out that’s surprisingly taking up a good chunk of my mind this morning, Actor by St. Vincent.

2009 has been full of surprises, so why am I still surprised that something I was relatively “meh” about before is suddenly sounding so beautiful, full, and rich? You’d think I’d be used to this by now. Don’t get me wrong, I liked that song “Marry Me”, I think it even wound up on a mixtape? Maybe my ears have changed, maybe that special nugget in Clark’s sound change, probably they both did and found themselves standing at the same corner of the same road at the same time….

Well, whatever the reasoning for the seasonings, the flavourings are delicious! Ethereal, quirky, odd… in a different time & place, she’d be hanging out with Kate Bush & Laurie Anderson and probably doing a guest vocal or two for Peter Gabriel. But instead, she’s part of the bloggy-blog/myspace world of music and we need to love her as such.

According to Prefix, Clark apparently described Actor as a “technicolor animatronic ride” and was inspired by Pierrot le Fou, Badlands, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and the scores for Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lady and the Tramp from Disney. Interesting, I like the technicolor animatronic ride desription, that feels pretty correct. There are times you feel you are lost (physically & emotionally) in some secret Disney ride, twinkling along as if in some fairy tale.

Quite amazing & surreal…. Enjoy!

What would your mother say
What would your father do?
What would the neighbors think?

Now, go show Ms. Clark all your love here, here, and here
