Happy Easter Monday to my dear Canucks and I think another country. Any holiday that results in time off from work/school/etc is a-okay in my book. No bunnies, no silliness, just a random Monday off. Jealous? I know I am. Fortunately, with my wonderful family in town I took the day off to hang out with them…
Anywho, got a special treat for you today… Down in the Society, clockout challenged us to make a new mixtape. A pretty simple concept that is harder to execute than one would think. Make a mixtape of your 20 favourite songs from the past 20 years, one song per year. Simple, eh? I thought I’d make it a little more challenging and make it a mix of songs to keep my ass pedaling on the bike, either fast, fun, or complete zone-out songs. Well, some years, sure, no problem. But I’ll tell you, I didn’t realize how slim the pickins were for a couple. 2000….. Oof. Was it the fear of Y2K (pronounced “WHY TOO KAY“) that screwed everyone’s creativity? I don’t know, but there seemed to be complete shit & shinola out that year. Fortunately, I found a Y2K album I loved, didn’t even realize it was 2000, but phew, if you know what I mean.
So, I got on a roll here and there and suddenly when I hit 1990, I realized I didn’t want to stop! So I kept going… Started digging into the 80’s, my childhood and teen years, oh man, so many gems to choose from! It was a blast just reliving half of them (not all of them though). Then we fell into the 70’s and I felt compelled to keep it up, let’s go to my birth, 1973! Why not? So we trudged on, finding gem after gem after—— 1974. Ouch. I research wikipedia, rateyourmusic, allmusic, and just sad internet google searches… Man, it took awhile to finally stumble on an old fave, not just album, but album cover, Roxy Music’s Country Life… Mmmmm….
I was going to cap it off with a little “Close To The Edge”, but when I looked up the date, it was 1972! Oh shitake mushrooms!!!! So, I dropped in some favourite Genesis (the Peter Gabriel kind, fuck yeah), and screw it…….. I was “alive in the womb” in 1972, right? Plenty of studies talk of music being important when you are chillin’ out in yo mommas belly, right? Not that my mom or dad was jamming to Yes or anything, but still.. and this is MY favourite songs (and MY mixtape, dammit) so there you go, “Close To The Edge” is in!!!
There you have it, my dear friends. 38 songs, 3.3 hours, from the womb (love that word) to what will be my 36th (oof) birthday next month. All kickin’ ass in their own special way, and all pretty damn special to me (a few surprises in there, more fun to play “blind” in my opinion, but to each their own).
So enjoy! And while you are strolling along & “rocking out” through memory lane with me, why don’t you get your own little mixtape together and share with us down in the Society? Let’s see what you are made of (literally AND figuratively). But for now, enjoy as…
