As I thumbed through the records this morning, this album, with all it’s mono-brow glory, stared at me, wanting to be ripped. Who am I to resist one of my favourite REM albums of all time? So, I loaded up Life’s Rich Pageant and let that glorious chiming guitar wash over me until they immediately begin to “rock out”, itwas then I knew I made the right call…
Stipe is crystal clear and full of conviction about the crumbling world around him, politically, environmentally, and maybe a little bit emotionally (I mean, aren’t all political statements also personal statements? Isn’t our world view and the view of ourselves intimately tied together, even if just slightly?). He’s not as “pissed off” as we’ll see in his more cantankerous “old age” on Accelerate, but don’t let his tendency for quasi-cryptic lyrics confuse you, our boy Stipe wasn’t the happiest camper in the world during our Reagan period.
It’s been 22 years since this album graced us, and I’m sure more than one dissertation has been written on it already, yet it still sounds as fresh & relevant today as it did in ’86, how many political albums can you say that about? Yeah, not many.
Okay… I’ve got a special Members Only vinyl rip coming up next, but you’d know that already if you were hanging with us over on FACEBOOK or down in the Our Society, wouldn’t ya? So… let’s get right to it, shall we as…
