Have I told you lately how much I love Our Society, our little music brigade, of sorts? It’s not just the Basement Required Listening selections, the beautiful vinyl rips, or just the incredible album suggestions, no, it’s way beyond that…. it’s their ability to love music in all it’s forms, not judge people for what they’ve connected to, and their desire to have a little place to escape from the generally snarky and douchy internets (and real worlds) and just come find, enjoy, and discuss music. It’s a beautiful thing, my friends…
One of my very favourite examples (outside of helping people find music), is with the mixtapes we all build and share. Some of the most amazing collections of songs built around ideas, feelings, themes, whatever have been posted on the board, and over and over again I’m amazed at, not just the songs, but in the careful & thoughtful way they are assembled and ordered, often with their own artwork!
To encourage more and more mixtapes, we’ve held a couple friendly competitions surrounding various themes where winners won an awesome society shirt! Our last one was the Essentials competition, which gave some incredible insight to each person and their musical influences. The one we JUST started, which I’m quite excited about, is called “Resoundtracked”, where each person is going to build new soundtracks on a movie, any movie! Can’t wait to see what people put together. I’m thinking about either attacking an iconic movie or just one of my favourites (but it’s a secret!). You know, you can participate in the Resoundtrack challenge too, all you got to do is join & participate!
Where was I? Oh yes…. Our third competion, which is now in the voting stages & where we upped the bounty to a prize from my baby, the super talented TsuruBride, was our toughest one yet! The idea was to build a story or conversation or dialogue or something along that lines through a mixtape, using the song titles as the text! Sounds easy enough, well until you actually try it. It’s one thing to create a poem, it’s a whole ‘nother thing to make it a good mixtape! Like I said, the competition is closed and we are in the voting stage, so I started listening, started to figure out which I liked the most, and man so far, I’ve been blown away!
First up was birdantony and his simply titled dark masterpiece A Poem In Music…
Cover by birdantony
birdantony is no stranger to dark & dramatic mixtapes, he constantly blows us away with his ability to create rich & atmospheric collections…. but this time, while building a beautiful poem, he created just a fascinating and often haunting mixtape. There’s always a dark edge, just in the shadows, just down the alley, just outside the center stage light to each song, that ties perfectly with his poem that questions god’s actions and ultimate intentions. Really stunning.
Thank you so much birdantony! You kicked some serious ass with this beauty. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of the entries, but for now let’s get our poetry on as…
TSURURADIO Proudly Presents…. birdantony’s A Poem In Music
(Full Zip – play gapless!)
When your number isn’t up, God’s gonna cut you down
and the moon hits the water so bad,
hope there’s someone who knows where the time goes.
Here I am in my room, I see a darkness,
will the night leave me alone.
Down on the street the moon is in the gutter,
along where the wind blows.
Whilst the night rejoices profound and still
everything inside me is ill
God’s away on business where no endings end,
I have forgiven Jesus, I don’t want to die alone.
