TSURURADIO Presents… Ten on Vinyl!!!

Photography by Eric & Laura

A dreary rainy cold Sunday after a long and lovely weekend. Maybe a little grunge will kick you in the ass. After the Vitalogy vinyl rip and after our Essentials by Chionodox mixtape, I had a hankering for Pearl Jam’s Ten, to hear those (in my opinion) over-produced grunge sounds, to hear Vedder emote his ass off about some kid named Jeremy, to see one of the band members dressed up like an extra from Desperately Seeking Susan (seriously, look at the dude on the left…. Oof), and to, well, rock out.

So, this morning, with the sky a blah-blah shade of grey, and the rain a tinkering around, unsure whether it wanted to downpour or water torture you to death, I slid on faux-torn Levi’s, my flannel shirt, added a bit of Brylcreem (keeps you right on top!) to my scalp for that extra grimy look, popped on my headphones, cranked the volume up to “bleeding ears”, and let Vedder and crew’s Seattle-flavoured rock take over.

Not sure what needs to be said about Ten… It, along with good ol’ Nirvana, help bring a whole new realm of music to the radio to a bunch of bored radio listeners ready for a little music that wasn’t empty, hollowed out crap that was being spoon-fed to them.

Ironically & eventually, a million and a half empty and hallowed out versions of Nirvana & Pearl Jam would soon be owning the airwaves slowly taking us back, through a subtle evolution of major label “offerings”, to the same boy-band & mass-produced crap we have today! Hooray!

I guess that’s just the ebb & flow of mainstream music, of life, of existence. If the Laws of Thermodynamics teach us anything, it’s that it all ends up in a watered-down equilibrium, i.e. the Goo Goo Dolls & Matchbox Twenty, and as dictated by Chaos Theory, the universe goes from order to disorder, from organized energy to heat energy, spread out across space, cold and lifeless, i.e. Nickelback.

But that’s now, and this was 1991 and Cobain wasn’t a music martyr yet for people who like to call artist who kill themselves at their “peak” (or just beyond it) martyrs (what’s the status on Michael Hutchence anyway) It was still a little bit pure, a little bit new, and suddenly we ALL wanted to go live in Seattle, wear Doc Martens (are these cool again, yet? I kinda want a pair), & drink coffee in the rain.

So yeah, I’m going to push some steam through some grinds, write some poetry about how hard life is, and look at the rain (oh well, whatever). Load it up, turn it up, and take a sip with me as…
