We have material minds and restless hands…

You know, when a site you respect tells you that an album you never heard of is their number one album of the year, you go listen to it, right? Right. This is the case when Indie Passion posted their top 50 albums the other week and The Recordings Of The Middle East by, well, The Middle East landed at the tippy top, no write up, no nothing from Mayo, just BLAMO.

Well considering we are all a bunch of music geeks, we were all very curious down in the society, a little searching, a little posting, and before you know it, we were all listening in, trying to hear what Mayo heard.

And wow.

Actually a group of Queensland, Aussie’s (not at ALL like the Middle East), The Middle East create beautifully lush “ambient post-rock folk”…. seriously, you have to love that description that’s floating around, and it’s pretty accurate. Considering Sigur Ros made Mayo’s #2 spot, I can see why Middle East hit him so hard. Sonically diverse & full, you can imagine sitting on the lawn at a festival on a beautiful cool summer evening, why “Lonely” just takes over, filling the air with beauty. Hell, I even have laser lights bouncing around in my head right now. But epic, all-encompassing sounds are only part of their repertoire, as the initial track, “The Darkest Side” and later “Fool’s Gold” demonstrate, their quiet folkish side subtly wash over you with harmonies and gorgeous acoustic guitar work.

Overall, a very beautiful album and I’m now very grateful to Indie Passion for loving this as much as he did. But now it’s your turn to enjoy our second overlooked 2008 gem (so much music and only one year to find & hear it all!)…

The Middle East – 01 The Darkest Side
The Middle East – 02 Beleriand
The Middle East – 03 Lonely

We have material minds
and restless hands
longing hearts
and lonely beds…

Can’t find much out there on them, so just go to their myspace and show them some love, okay?
