The heartbreak rides for free…

Well my friends, your boy Tsuru got hit with a tsunami last night by way of a stomach virus. Hit me like a ton o’ bricks. Throughout the day, I was feeling kinda crappy in my stomach, but chalked it up to a little partying over the weekend, but man, when we left work, at first, I actually felt happy & good (you see, yesterday was one of those days where I REALLY didn’t want to be at work). We headed across town to see a man about a bike (yes, another bike, but this one, I swear, isn’t for me! A sweet 90’s Giant Kronos for my daughter for xmas, can’t wait to mod it up for her!), and by the time we checked it out and paid the large man (I mean LARGE, built like a brick house! man… what’s with the brick references already?) I started getting cold, like deep down cold. It was in the 20’s so I assumed it was just the weather.

We stopped off at the grocery store and I just couldn’t get warm, my body started to ache, and my stomach started tightening up. “Uh oh”, I said, “baby, something ain’t right”… We quickly bought our food and headed home, things were going downhill super quick. I basically threw the groceries and bike in the house, went up stairs, put on some flannel PJs and a huge sweater and buried myself under a blanket in front of the space heater, where I then proceeded to shiver like a wet chihuahua! Not a pretty sight.

Baby was super sweet to me (of course), but as my stomach started clinching, so begin the process of fighting nausea, a skill I’m (for better or for worse) really good at…. I have a few fears, one that beats most others is my vomiphobia, my fear of tossing cookies, upchucking, praying to the porcelain god, etc. It’s actually the stem of my fear of some heights and things like roller-coasters, it’s more the fear of puking that makes those fears fears. Does that make sense? I’m sure there’s a psychological thing about it, but I’m working on it.

Well, sickness be damned! After a bit of coffee and crackers, and eventually a little soup, I’m feeling about 10% better and figured we shouldn’t wait to get one of our favourite New Pornographers on, yep, our boy AC Newman and his pop gem Get Guilty. What else do you expect from him? Perfectly crafted pop, beautiful harmonies, and a bit of experimentation from the typical strum-strum pop song. The only thing I can say negative about the album is I keep expecting a Neko or Dan song to come on! But that’s my own fault, I proud myself on my ability to listen to songs in the vacuum of their own existence, but with Newman, it’s hard not to hear Neko back there, or expect the syrupy volcals of Bejar to pop up… Fortunately, after the 13th time or so through, that expectation starts to fade, and you appreciate what Carl’s got going here, yet another well-crafted gem. Like I was saying in our Most Awesomest Tsururific Albums Of 2008 presentation, where I feel that Newman has had a wonderful effect on Bejar, I feel the same must be true of Bejar to Newman, as in Get Guilty, we are finding a bit more depth, a bit more meat, a touch of the theatric & quirky, and we are all the benefactors of that…

I hear tell they are working on their next New Pornographers album already. Will this be the year of Newman? That remains to be seen, but for now, let’s get guilty…

AC Newman – 01 There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve
AC Newman – 02 The Heartbreak Rides

The heartbreak rides are free…
yo ho..

AC Newman – 03 Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to curl up in a ball and go back to sleep… But you, you need to go show our favourite ginger all your love here, here, and here now!!
