Take a turn, take a turn! Take our fortune, take our fortune!

Those little rabble-rousers over at Pitchfork (everybody’s first place to slam, and first place to refer to) did a little review recently of the new Deluxe Edition of REM’s full length debut Murmur, even gave it a 10.0… This is great, because when someone on some board got a little miffed about it and decided to talk about it, I learned it existed and I had to have it!

Knowing I wouldn’t be getting to a record store until sometime this weekend, I did a bit of online searching and found it. It’s not my favourite REM album, but it’s definitely one of their most important (I’d say each album that marks a new time in REM’s discography is important), and when the review spent a little time discussing what the remastering did for the recording, well, needless to say I was pretty excited to get my ears on it.

So, how does it sound?

Unreal. Remasters aren’t always my thing, I’m a bit of a purist, an album is released and that’s how I want to hear it, the way it was when it came out, you know? But, my main problem with Murmur was it’s murkiness. It was always like something was covering the mics or something, shaving off that little bit of sound. Well, the remastering doesn’t “change” the album, but it does pull each person’s role up a little. Instead of playing under the bushes or moss or whatever the fuck that stuff is on the album cover, they are standing on top of it, playing “Radio Free Europe” or “We Walk” or whatever (you get the picture, eh?). It’s really beautiful and I’m so thankful for IRS for spending the time doing this to pull a few more bucks from the REM diehards like myself.

As for the live album included in the package, it’s really good too, but honestly, it’s Murmur I care about and Murmur that I spend my time, my ears, my heart on… Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s some leftover turkey waiting for me for breakfast, and I feel like getting my “Pilgrimage” on!

Enjoy!

REM – 01 Radio Free Europe
REM – 02 Pilgrimage

Take a turn, take a turn…
Take our fortune, take our fortune

They called the clip a two-headed cow
Your hate clipped and distant, your luck, pilgrimage
Rest assured this will not last, take a turn for the worst
Your hate clipped and distant, your luck a two-headed cow
The pilgrimage has gained momentum
Take a turn, take a turn
Take our fortune, take our fortune

Speakin’ in tongues, it’s worth a broken lip
Your hate clipped and distant, your luck, pilgrimage
Rest assured this will not last, take a turn for the worst
Your hate clipped and distant, your luck a two-headed cow
The pilgrimage has gained momentum
Take a turn (take a turn), take a turn (take a turn)
Take our fortune (take a turn), take our fortune

Pilgrimage, pilgrimage
