When it comes to geography, I’m woefully ignorant, like, extra super ignorant. Even here in the states, I’ve got a basic handle on the more obvious states, California’s over there, Texas is down there, I was just in Arizona, it’s kinda in between the other two, Florida (my homeland) is America’s wang hanging low and lazy…. That’s about it. International’s worse, well except for Canada & Mexico, I’ve pretty much got them located in my mind, but it starts to get hazy once you hit the big blue oceans.
It reaches depths of ignorance only seen on “reality TV” when it comes to that grouping of countries called Scandinavia. Until very recently, I actually thought Scandinavia WAS a country, but no, it isn’t (but it’s a cool name for one if you are thinking of staging a coup or something). Apparently it’s Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Greenland, & the Faroe Islands, but even that depends on which source you look at! I have no idea if they are “united” or just hangout because they are neighbors or what. It’s all very confusing. But this much I do know…. the inhabitants of these often chilly countries have a beautiful world view that shows up in their music.
Wait a sec…. how do you know that?
Because… we have a very special group of members in our little music brigade that are connoisseurs of the music that makes it’s way from these often forgotten countries and I asked them to teach me, show me the ways of Scandinavia (via a mixtape, of course)! And no, not some pre-processed whatever that some label cranked out, one of their own, from their ears…. Two members really stepped up and I’m lucky enough to be able to share their mixtapes with you today. Turns out I knew a little more Scandinavian music than I thunk! I actually knew a band or two! Go figure. WOOT!
Okay… but what about the music, how is it? Did you like it?
Okay, I’m talking to myself a bit too much, but YES! It’s beautiful. It’s got an element of pristine about it or something, clean, crisp, and often as gorgeous & graceful as the aurora borealis (do they even have that there? I have no clue, but you get the idea). I also love how each person approached the mixtape, each mix has the personality of the member in the track choices & order, which is probably my favourite part, picking apart Mesmerized’s and Lotte’s thought process, and feeling very special to be able to look into hearts at what THEY think is beautiful and special about Scandinavian music…
Pretty cool. So thanks guys, I really appreciate the lesson, I’ll be keeping this on my player for a while, but now it’s time to bring it to the rest of the world as the…
