Happy Halloweenie, my friends! Been enjoying Isa’s Francophone mix? What a coincidence, me too!
You know, I was looking back at the week or so of music we’ve shared, from a Weezer podcast (great for cycling, by the way) & Apollo Sunshine from last week, Begushkin, some 90’s Pearl Jam record, Belle & Sebastian, then our francophile mix this week, and then I was poking around elbo.ws today and it really hit me upside the head how, with the exception of maybe Belle & Sebastian, uncool we are here at tsururadio… Let’s take a look at the current top ten and see what the hell we’ve been missing…
1 Pallers – Humdrum
2 Kanye West – Robocop
3 +/- – Snowblind
4 Kanye West – Coldest Winter
5 of Montreal – Id Engager
6 Designer Drugs – ZOMBIES!
7 Sebastien Grainger – American Names
8 Parts & Labor – Nowheres Nigh
9 Mos Def – Life in Marvelous Times
10 Matt and Kim – Daylight
Two Kanye songs? Really? Dang. And what’s with Mos Def & West feeling the need to “sing”? “Robocop” & “Coldest Winter” both sound like they were stuck in a mp3 garberator for a couple days, one from the 80’s at that. Is it supposed to sound like that? Now, that Parts & Labor (the band spelled it wrong, it’s “Labour”, ha!) song is pretty sweet, I’ll have to check that out, and the Matt & Kim song is catchy enough, though I kind of expect to see it selling some product soon enough (maybe a youth oriented mobile phone service?), but the rest…. when did indie-dance music become so popular? Was it part of that whole Justice thing that happened? So, just so I’m clear, hip-hop has gone to singing retro songs, while indie-pop has gone dance.
Man, talk about missing that, it looks like I’ve been leading you astray a bit, down a path of geekery and make-funery, and for that… I’m sorry. But hey, at least we are on the path together, right? Personally, I like it. Sure, we got our ups and down, our twists and turns, our prog & indie, but it’s never a dull moment, always something new just around the corner! Take for example this little song that poked it’s mini-anthemic head out a day or so ago, the first track on the soon to be leaked new AC Newman solo album Get Guilty! It’s all AC, short, sweet, and pure pop. I wonder where it will lie in the overall tracklisting? It sounds a bit transitional, or like a lead off. I’m hesitant to look, I want to be surprised. Regardless, I can’t wait to hear the whole thing… but for now, we just got the one song, so…
Let the hype begin!
There may be 10 or 12 things
that I could teach you
you are on your own
Good stuff, eh? But that’s not it for today, oh no my friends, got one more that’s been stuck in my ear for a couple days that I need to share…. a little something called Little Joy (after all, it IS Halloween, and don’t we all deserve a treat or two?) Coming off like a hybrid of the musical lightness of Human Highway with the lead vocals of the Strokes, this sweet little album has been dancing lightly around on my iPod, while my head and shoulders sway side to side, dreaming of warmer days, spring time, flowers, and holding hands. Little Joy is Binki Shapiro, Rodrigo Amarante (Singer/Guitarist of Los Hermanos) and Fabrizio Moretti (drummer of The Strokes (wait, who’s singing?)), and now I want to name my next child (or at least my next house plant) Binki (Shlomo will just have to share windowsill space).
You following all of this?
Yeah? Well, you are a better person than I am. Just know this, it’s fun, it’s light, it’s perfect for a Friday afternoon, which means it’s just plain tsururific. Have a great weekend, hope to get a little vinyl up for ya, but until then…
