TSURURADIO Presents… Armchair Apocrypha on Vinyl!!!

Photography by Asia Karwecka

I know what you’ve been thinking…. “Hey Tsuru! Where da fuck be da vinyls???” I know, I know, it seems like I’ve been a bit lack-a-daisal about doing our prize winning vinyl rips, that maybe instead of spinning records, I’m spinning my legs on my bike. Well, that’s partially true, but the main reason was what I was hearing… I just wasn’t happy with the quality. I used to have, back when I was a young lad with my first huge record collection, a real nice hand-me-down turntable that I loved and worn the hell out of, and here I was now, re-building my collection, ripping it for you, on what amounts to an Urban Outfitter’s novelty item. It was serviceable and got the bug and ball rolling, but hearing the cheap needle grind along my records, hearing the motor in the background of the rip, hearing each recording being slightly too fast, well…. it was time to step up, to “man up” if you will, and get serious! Supernatural super serious, in fact!

I was very lucky, my timing couldn’t have been more perfect, because after a bit of searching on my friendly neighborhood craigslist, I found a very well kept Pioneer PL-115D! I didn’t even bargain, I just threw the two 20s at him and ran… ran like the wind (beneath my wings) without caring if I over or under-paid!

Check out the photo I took below of her playing a little Neutral Milk Hotel, for all your audio porn needs…

Are you turned on yet? I know I am. So, yesterday the pre-amp arrived and I hooked her up. Took a bit of finagling with the settings on the turntable & pre-amp, a few false starts (SubPop REALLY needs to find a better vinyl supplier), but after getting to a happy place, I was in vinyl heaven.

I listened to some Neutral Milk (specifically, my favourite trilogy that starts with “Ghost” and ends with Jeff putting the guitar down for good) and “Starship Trooper” by Yes (is there a better guitar riff/melody/solo than “Part III, Würm” during that song? I don’t think so, Howe was perfect). Finally I recorded today’s vinyl rip, Andrew Bird’s absolutely beautiful Armchair Apocrypha

I love Andrew Bird and probably have one of them man-crushes on him. It’s the intelligent pop combined with super-literate lyrics. The combo gets me all hot-n-bothered leading to messy eargasms (ha!). Colin Meloy, Michael Stipe, and now Bird…. I have my degree in Chemistry, so Bird’s lyrics play off like all those lectures & classes I sat through, devouring all things science.

And, I like to whistle…

Combine all of that with the beauty & richness of vinyl, and you got one happy boy right here. Are there better turntables? Of course…. Do I care? No. This is just right for me, for now. So, I hope you enjoy and I hope you like the new sound. Don’t worry, I’m still going to leave the needle dropping & lifting, and all the snap, crackle, and pops in the recordings, I’m no audiophile, I believe in sharing the experience more than trying to extract the “perfect sound”. You hear… what I hear! Hear! Hear!!!

So, shall we? Let’s. As…
