I don’t want a pickle, I just want to ride on my (moody) motorcycle…

Post title inspired by Arlo Guthrie’s “Motorcycle Song

Man… I’ve got too much good music going on, the choices of what to listen to is getting almost unmanageable. Okkervil River’s new one The Stand Ins, a brilliant sequel to the superb The Stage Names leaked and is amazing. Unfortunately, Jagjaguwar is never keen on spreading love, so we’ll just save that one for a much later date (assuming it makes our best of or, more asuredly, a mixtape).

But no worries, no fears, I’ve got another gem that’s been occupying my tempanic membrane. Islands have been in a major battle in my heart, soul, and mind for album of the year with Arm’s Way, and as if that’s not enough from Nicholas Thorburn and co, along comes the horribly Oprah-book-of-the-month-club named Human Highway and their almost as poorly named album Moody Motorcycle (sorry guys, but what’s in a name, right?). Apparently, Jim Guthrie (any relation to Arlo and Woody?) & Mr. Thorburn conceived and birthed this simple gem of an album after spending a week on Guthrie’s couch in Toronto. The results are wonderful. Starting off a bit on the cutesy AM pop radio side, before settling in to a steady groove, the album coasted along with my 20 mile bike ride yestermorning on a beautiful wooded bike path.

Two things to note on this album…. First, the bad (ish, not really), “Pretty Hair” comes off like an Islands song. Thematically, sonically, everything-ly. I love the song, so I’m not complaining, but I think it’s on the wrong album. Second, the funny? “What World” seems to have borrowed some inspiration from The Simpsons. I’ll give you a hint, listen carefully to the song’s lyrics, then go watch the episode where Milhouse’s dad and mom split. Don’t know if it’s funny or sad that I picked up on that. Probably the latter or former, whichever means the second option.

Anywho…. enjoy!
