Presents… Ships on Vinyl!!!

Photography, ironically called “the —666— FOOL II”, by Vicky

Man o’ man, what a great weekend in Chicago! Even though we were only about 6 hours away from Columbus, it felt like (mentally) we were on the otherside of the planet. Work was the last thing on my mind! Which is a great feeling… I’ll tell you what WAS on my mind though, vinyl. Holy crap, we bought a bunch this weekend. We hit 3 places, Dusty Grooves (to get our soul, funk & R&B on), Reckless Records (indie-indie), and Goodwill (yes, I said “Goodwill”, not on purpose, mind you, we were looking for some fun clothes and found some even funnier records!). Okay, so check out our purchases…

Dusty Grooves:

The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band – In The Jungle
Stevie Wonder – Innervisions
James Brown Sings Raw Soul
Candi Staton – House Of Love
The Supremes & The Four Tops – Dynamite
Laura Lee – Women’s Love Rights
Le Pamplemousse (one of my favorite french words) – Sweet Magic

Reckless Records:

Betty Swann – A double LP Compilation
Tapes N’ Tapes – Walk It Off
Swan Lake – Beast Moans
Destroyer – Trouble In Dreams

Aaaand Goodwill:

The Charlie Daniels Band – Million Mile Reflections (if only for “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”)
Boz Scaggs – Down Two Then Left (I have no idea why)
Something called The Swinging Sixties, Benrus Collector’s Item
And, I kid you not, an album called Favorite Songs For Young Cowhands…. lol. It’s got “Home On The Range”, “Git Along Little Doggie”, etc…. hilarious…

Good haul, I’d say…. but today we offer up something we picked up the other weekend on our 2 1/2 hour bike adventure throughout Columbus that landed us over at Used Kids Records, namely, Danielson’s Ships.

I have a long weird relationship with Danielson, et al. I actually came across him/them in the early days of the mp3. There was some site that let you download a few mp3’s for free and when I searched for bands similar to Violent Femmes, Danielson Famile came up. I liked it and it ended up on a few mixes here and there. But for some reason, I never bought anything, that is, until many years later when Ships came along, which I’ve own 3 copies of… Nutty, eh?

First time was on tsurubride’s & my first trip together to amazing Toronto where we found ourselves spending way too much money on CD’s but walking out of Soundscapes with about 10 new CDs, one of which was Ships. The second was when I acquired a couple boxes of promo discs and in it was a perfect CD, artwork and all, for this amazing album. Then finally, while perusing the selection at Used Kids, and seeing this album in it’s full 12″ x 12″ glory staring at me in the face. I knew I had to get ‘er and rip ‘er for your listening pleasure (I think this album is haunting me).

I’m not going to jibber on about Daniel Smith himself, sites like Pitchfork would rather show off their music historical knowledge (why? when a million other sites already do it, and better? Oh well). I will say this, Danielson is not for the casual pop fan, it’s not easy listening, and he’s got a thing for Jesus. Yet, here I am, listening to it again and again! And now it’s your turn.

I almost didn’t share this one. The album has a slight warp that creates a bit of static distortion in “Ship The Majestic Suffix” (don’t worry, there’s no warbling or anything), and also, it’s a rather noisy album (but maybe that’s my needle, we do listen to ALOT of vinyl). But, at the end, it is what it is, and what you hears is what I hears, so go hears it as…
