Presents… Live At Harlem Square Club, 1963 on Vinyl!!!

A long time ago (almost a year ago, wow), I posted the vinyl rip of Sam Cooke At The Copa (don’t worry, the full zip is re-upped below) which showed Sam Cooke “The Crooner” at his finest as he sang to a primarily white audience. Today, after way too much time, we present it’s counter-part, Sam Cooke Live At Harlem Square Club, 1963. This is Sam Cooke, the “Soul Singer”, bringing the grit and swing to an unbelievable level down in Miami, FL, to a primarily black audience.

One of the beauties of Sam was the control of his voice, his ability to treat it, not just as a means to express lyrics in tune to the melody, but to manipulate it, adjust it, to his needs, to the audience, to the feeling of the moment, like a master musician, only his instrument was buried in his throat. What Louis Armstrong was to the trumpet, what Neil Peart is to the drums (surprised you with that one, didn’t I), Sam Cooke is to the voice.

But, don’t take my word for it… Check out this great & extensive review here, or go get this amazing biography here (Peter Guralnick also wrote the amazing liner notes for the record), OR…. Just download it all right here and hear for yourself. Yeah, option 3 sounds pretty good to me too, so get to it, as…
