When we’re making love, I won’t answer to nobody but you

Oh man, how long I’ve waited for this album, and how perfect is this, the day before we head to New Orleans??? This morning, I woke up to find the follow-up to Naturally (one of 2005’s best albums), Soul Sister #1 Sharon Jones and her incomparable Dap-Kings 100 Days, 100 Night
s has leaked on the preservers of vinyl, on the keepers of funk & soul, on the label of no equal, that’s right, on the beautiful Daptone Records!

And man-o-man is it soul-fucking-rific! This time around, Sharon dropped the funk quotient a touch and amped up the R&B and Soul. I read somewhere when the first track was released, “100 Days, 100 Nights” that “retro is in”. My friends, this ain’t retro, this is authentic, this is the way it’s supposed to be! Sharon pours her heart out on each track while the Dap-Kings keep the melody true…

Ah, I feel a bit of reminiscin’ about to happen… It was about a year and a half ago or so, Superbowl Sunday. It was my baby and I first trip away together, a weekend in Jacksonville/St. Augustine to go see Sharon Jones. It was a great weekend, lots of sweet lovins and a little bit of sightseeing (it is Jacksonville, after all). The night of the show, we found ourselves in an empty dive bar with about 10 other people while Binky started the show, got us warmed up with some funk-soul diamonds, until the glorious Sharon Jones made her appearance. Even though it was Superbowl Sunday, even though there was only 10 of us there, even though the sound system guy couldn’t give her the mix she wanted, and even though she wasn’t feeling all-that-great, they put on one of the best and most memorable shows I’ve ever seen! No special effects, no stupid frat boys and girls, no chatting by attendees who have no reason being there screwing up the songs, just amazing soul, funk, and R&B (and a lot of dancing by me and my baby).

With 100 Days, 100 Nights, we find Sharon and the boys continuing there amazing streak of wonderful albums, capturing a sound that I once thought was forgotten among the crap out there calling itself “soul” and “R&B”. Ten perfectly balance tunes about love, sex, and relationships. What more does one need?

Alright, enough talking, time to listen… Have a wonderful weekend (I know I will), and enjoy!
