My baby love love loves me

It’s finally, FINALLY, friday. Long, busy week…. oy.

So, let’s keep the fun music rolling, shall we? I think it’s impossible to listen to Jonathan Richman without either a) smiling or b) being super annoyed. Obviously, as he’s my featured artist today, I’m in the smiling camp. Now, back when I was young, and all into Velvet Underground, it was the Modern Lovers that could do no wrong, but as I moved on and my taste changed, it’s was his solo work, his simplistic, child-like, fun, songs about love, dinosaurs, New England, and ice cream that won me over. My favorite album by him is actually Her Mystery Not Of High Heels And Eye Shadow, an often overlooked gem. It was when he was touring for this album that I saw him play in a medium-sized bar with just him and his longtime drummer Tommy Larkins. Just him, his acoustic guitar, Tommy, and a snare (and maybe a tom? sorry, don’t know my drum equipment that well). One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Intimate and fun, in some respects, it actually kind of ruined the BIG concert experience for me, they feel so impersonal and rehearsed now…

Anyway, I’m digressing pretty badly, sorry. Where was we now?

The newer album, and his latest, 2004’s Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love, continues what he started with Her Mystery Not Of High Heels And Eye Shadow, mostly just acoustic guitar and drum, with touches of other instruments and flavours. Occasionally singing in Spanish and French, not unsual for Richman who seems to have a real thing for other languages, the album has more European and Latin flourishes than Her Mystery. A nice progression and a wonderfully uncomplicated release for a guy on his 21st album!

Alright, go listen and enjoy!

Jonathan Richman – My Baby Love Love Loves Me

Well, my baby love love loves me now
even more than I prayed for
my baby love love loves me
even more than I prayed
I prayed
I asked
but I didn’t expect this
my baby love love loves me now
even more than I prayed for
even more than I prayed
well she loves
she does
but I had to be ready for it
she loves
she does
but I had to be ready
I prayed
I asked
and I was blessed…

More love for Jonathan.
