I love it when a whim purchase works out. Was in NY Monday for work, going from a appointment to appointment, listening to Sunset Rubdown (again), watching the the people stop & go to the soundtrack blaring in my ears (rather surreal, given the lack of sleep I was working off of).
Had a few minutes to kill and my next meeting was near the Virgin music store and popped in. After finding a sweet t-shirt for baby, I saw Okkervil River’s latest release The Stage Names on sale for $13.99 and it came with a second CD of demo acoustic versions of all the songs. Well that’s nice, I thought, and I heard some good things (never got around to the leak that was floating around out there) about the album so, what the hell, I picked it up.
Oh man, good times, great album (Jagjaguwar records continues it’s stellar year), worthy of it’s own post already, but then “A Girl In Port” came on and literally punched me right in the balls, completely won me over and got the whole damn thing stuck on mad repeat. It’s country-soaked ballad, complete with slide guitar and horns that resonated perfectly with it’s gorgeous imagery…
Enjoy!Let fall your soft and swaying skirt
Let fall your shoes
Let fall your shirt
I’m not the lady-killing sort
Enough to hurt
A girl in port
